My Genesis Harem System in a Cultivation World
Chapter 8 | Ice That MeltedXu Tianlong woke to the scent of winter jasmine.
His eyes opened slowly, the world resolving from blur to clarity in painful increments. A silk pillow beneath his head. A warm blanket pulled to his chin. Sunlight filtering through paper windows, not the harsh gray of dawn, but the soft gold of afternoon. The air smelled of herbs and clean linen and something floral. Something familiar.
’Lin’s room. I’m in Lin’s room.’
He tried to sit up. The movement sent a spike of pain through his shoulder and ribs, and a grunt escaped before he could stop it. The sword wound. The cracked bones. The blood loss. All of it came rushing back, the attack, the mist, the blade swinging toward Lin, his body moving before thought. The darkness that had swallowed him.
He’d survived.
A cool hand pressed against his chest, gentle but firm, pushing him back onto the pillow.
"Don’t move."
Lin Yueyao’s voice was different. Still cold, still measured, but there was something beneath it. Exhaustion, maybe. Or fear that hadn’t fully faded. She sat on a wooden stool beside the bed, her dark hair pulled back in a simple knot, her formal cheongsam replaced by a plain robe of pale blue silk. The white streak at her temple was stark against the dark cascade. Shadows ringed her eyes. She hadn’t slept.
"You’ve been unconscious for two days," she said. "The physician said the wound in your shoulder went to the bone. Your ribs were cracked in three places. If you hadn’t broken through to Layer 6 during the battle, you would have died before I could stop the bleeding."
’Two days. She’s been watching me for two days.’
He swallowed. His throat was dry. "The compound—"
"Damaged but standing. The fire was contained. Your father is safe. The servants are frightened but alive." She paused. "Qing’er has been outside this door every hour asking about you. I finally had to order her to rest."
"She’s loyal."
"She’s devoted." Lin’s eyes flickered. "It seems you inspire that in people now."
He managed a faint smile. "Jealous?"
"Don’t be absurd." But her cheeks colored, just slightly. The ice beauty, blushing at his bedside.
A silence stretched between them. Outside, the compound was quiet, no clash of steel, no screaming. The attack was over. The Feng clan had retreated. They’d lost an expert and half their soldiers. They wouldn’t return immediately.
But they would return. That was the nature of enemies like the Feng clan. You had to destroy them completely or they’d keep coming back.
Lin broke the silence first.
"Why did you do it?"
"Do what?"
"Save me." Her voice tightened. "You threw yourself in front of a sword for me. You nearly died. Why?"
’Because the System needs you. Because you’re the first key to my power. Because without you, the Genesis Harem is useless.’
That was the strategic answer. The cold, logical answer. But as he looked at her, at the shadows under her eyes, at the way her hands were clasped too tightly in her lap, at the tremor in her voice that she couldn’t quite hide, another answer surfaced.
’Because I wanted to. Because when I saw that blade swinging toward you, something in me refused to let it land.’
He didn’t say either of those things. Instead, he told a truth that was simpler and more complicated all at once.
"You’re my fiancée. Whether you like it or not." His voice was weak but steady. "I protect what’s mine."
"That’s not—you can’t just—" She stood up abruptly, the stool scraping against the floor. Her hands were shaking. "You almost died. For me. The person who called you trash. Who said your survival was a pity. Who came to your room in the middle of the night to demand answers and ran away like a coward when you gave them. And you—" She pressed her palm against her forehead. "You should hate me."
"I don’t."
"You should!"
"I don’t hate you," he said again. "I never did. The old Xu Tianlong, the one who couldn’t look you in the eye, he didn’t hate you either. He was just broken. Defeated. He’d been told his whole life that he was worthless, and he believed it. You were just the loudest voice in the chorus."
She flinched. "I didn’t—"
"I know." He shifted on the pillow, grimacing at the pain in his ribs. "You didn’t know. You saw a weak man and you resented being tied to him. That’s not cruelty. That’s human."
She turned away from him, facing the window. Her shoulders were rigid. When she spoke again, her voice was quieter than he’d ever heard it.
"When my father told me about the engagement, I was 14. He said the Xu clan had a son, a boy with potential, he said. A boy who would grow into a strong cultivator, a worthy heir." She laughed, but there was no humor in it. "And for a while, I believed him. I waited. I watched. And every year, Xu Tianlong fell further behind. Every year, the whispers got louder. The pitying looks. The jokes behind my back. ’The ice beauty, shackled to a cripple.’ ’The Lin clan’s shame.’"
She turned back to face him. Her eyes were wet.
"I didn’t hate you because you were weak. I hated you because I was trapped. Because no matter how hard I trained, no matter how strong I became, I would always be the girl engaged to the weakest cultivator in Thousand Pines. And I took that out on you. Every cold word. Every dismissive glance. Every time I called you trash, I was trying to make you hate me enough to break the engagement yourself. Because I was too much of a coward to do it."
The confession hung in the air between them.
Xu Tianlong let out a long breath. The old Xu Tianlong would have been devastated. But Ethan Cole understood something the old Xu Tianlong never had. Hurt people hurt people. It wasn’t an excuse. But it was an explanation.
"Come here."
She stared at him. "What?"
"Come here. I can’t stand up, physician’s orders, so you’ll have to come to me."
Hesitantly, like a wild animal approaching an outstretched hand, she crossed the room and sat on the edge of the bed. He reached up, ignoring the protest of his injured shoulder, and took her hand.
"Lin Yueyao."
She looked at him.
"I’m not the man I was. You know that. You’ve seen it. Whatever the old Xu Tianlong was, weak, broken, pathetic, that’s not me. Not anymore. The poison didn’t just try to kill me. It burned away everything I used to be. And what’s left..." He squeezed her hand. "What’s left is a man who’s going to rebuild this clan. Who’s going to make the Feng family regret the day they crossed him. And who’s going to marry you, not because of a contract our fathers signed when we were children, but because I choose you."
Her breath caught. Her fingers tightened around his.
"You’re serious."
"I’m always serious."
A tear slipped down her cheek. Then another. She tried to wipe them away, but he caught her wrist, gently, carefully, mindful of her strength and his injuries.
"You don’t have to hide from me," he said. "Not anymore."
She stared at him for a long moment. Then, very slowly, she leaned down and pressed her forehead against his uninjured shoulder. Her body shook with silent sobs.
[Ding!]
The panel shimmered to life beside him.

’70 percent. The threshold. She’s ready.’
He didn’t push. Didn’t demand. Just held her while she cried, his hand resting on the back of her head, the scent of winter jasmine filling his lungs. The ice was gone now. What remained was something stronger.
Two more days passed.
Lin stayed by his bedside for most of them, leaving only to sleep, and even then, she returned before dawn. She changed his bandages. Fed him broth when he was too weak to hold the spoon himself. Read to him from old cultivation manuals when the silence grew too heavy. And when she was there, sitting beside him with the lamplight catching the white streak in her hair, he found himself watching her. Not as a target. Not as a conquest. Just as a woman who’d been broken in her own ways and was slowly learning to be whole.
On the evening of the third day, the physician declared him fit enough to walk. His shoulder was still sore. His ribs still ached when he breathed too deeply. But the worst was over. The breakthrough to Layer 6 had accelerated his healing far beyond normal human capacity.
Lin dismissed the physician and closed the door behind him.
When she turned back, there was something different in her eyes. Something that made the air in the room feel heavier.
"You should rest," she said.
"I’ve been resting for three days."
"Then you should—" She stopped. Swallowed. Her hands fidgeted at her sides, a nervous gesture he’d never seen from her before. "The physician said you’re still weak. That you shouldn’t exert yourself. That you need someone to watch over you. Through the night."
"I think the physician said no such thing."
Her cheeks flushed. "I’m paraphrasing."
He sat up in the bed, his back against the headboard. The lamplight caught the curve of her jaw, the uncertainty in her dark amber eyes.
"Lin Yueyao. What are you asking me?"
She crossed the room in three quick strides and stopped at the foot of the bed. Her chest rose and fell beneath her silk robe. Her hands gripped the wooden footboard like it was the only thing keeping her upright.
"I’m not leaving tonight," she said. "And I’m not asking permission."
He raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?"
"Yes."
"And if I tell you to go?"
"Then I’ll ignore you." She walked to the door. Not to leave. To slide the wooden lock into place. The click echoed through the silent room. "You said I was yours. You said you protect what’s yours. But I’ve decided something, too."
"And what’s that?"
She turned to face him. Her eyes were fierce, not cold anymore, but burning.
"If I am yours, then... I... I’m not letting you go."
