My Girlfriend Is a Demon Queen

Chapter 14: One Step from the Truth

His opened the door with trembling hands.

immediately plastered a super forced, fake smile on his face, trying to hide his panic. "Heeey... what brings you here?"

Shyam pushed his glasses up his nose with one finger. His sharp eyes scanned Himanshu from head to toe in a single second.

"Why are you panicking so much?" Shyam fired the question straight at him.

Himanshu instantly stiffened his body, failing miserably at trying to look normal. "I... I don’t get it. What are you talking about?"

Shyam’s gaze suddenly locked onto Himanshu’s left eye.

"Forget all that, what happened to your eye? Why is it so swollen?"

Himanshu’s heart stopped for a second. Before he could even say a word, Shyam’s sharp eyes noticed something else.

"Cold air is coming from inside, which clearly means the AC is on... but I can easily see drops of sweat on the collar of your t-shirt."

Himanshu cursed himself in his head. Great... his detective mode is on!

Just like always, Himanshu blurted out a stupid excuse in his panic. After all, this wasn’t the first time he was sweating bullets in front of this guy.

"Um... I just came from the washroom," Himanshu stammered. "My eye hit the door... and because the doorbell rang, I spilled water on my collar while drinking."

Shyam took a deep breath and shook his head. "You couldn’t even make up a good excuse. Just like always. Now move aside."

Shyam gave him a slight push on the shoulder, walking inside, and bent down to take off his shoes. He took off his shoes.

With a pounding heart, Himanshu closed the door behind him and asked, trying to look normal, "Looking at you, it seems like you came in a hurry. Did something happen?"

Picking up his shoes and putting them to the side without looking back, Shyam said, "Yeah. If I hadn’t hurried, you two would have run away."

Himanshu clenched his fists and gritted his teeth hard. Why is this written in my fate?

"What? What are you saying?" Himanshu asked, playing dumb. "Who both? What are you talking about?"

Shyam turned around and gave him a sharp look. "Look, there’s no use hiding it. An hour ago, your mom called my mom. She invited us over for dinner. She wants to introduce us to Himanshu’s GF."

Saying this, Shyam shoved both his hands into his pants pockets and walked straight into the living room. He was staring at everything in the house like he was here for a crime investigation.

Himanshu quietly followed right behind him. In his head, he just wanted to beat this guy up. I swear I want to break all his teeth!

Suddenly, Shyam turned back around. "You didn’t answer. That means you are mad at me."

Himanshu tried to dodge the topic. "Look, you are overthinking this. Come on, why would I be mad at you? And anyway, Veloria..." Himanshu used the Demon Queen’s fake name, "...she is coming in the evening. She is not here right now."

Shyam gave a cool smile and just dropped onto the sofa. Leaning his back against it, he locked both hands behind his head, lifted his legs, and rested them on the center table. Crossing one leg over the other and swinging it casually, he laughed and said, "Oh really? But your mom said she was making her favorite food for her right now."

Hearing this, Himanshu’s eyes went wide with shock. A fresh drop of sweat rolled down his forehead. He started biting his upper lip nervously.

In a battle of brains... I can never beat this guy! Himanshu thought to himself. This bastard only reveals enough information to catch you in a lie!

Himanshu hurriedly tried to cover his lie. "Yeah... she was here. But she just left. Like 10 minutes ago."

"Alright then. See you tonight," Shyam said in a completely calm voice.

Shyam put his legs down and stood up. He slowly walked over, getting really close to Himanshu. He stopped right next to him. Turning his face toward Himanshu, he adjusted his glasses with one hand and placed his other heavy hand on Himanshu’s shoulder.

"You shouldn’t have lied to your mom," Shyam whispered.

Hearing this, a jolt of electricity shot through Himanshu’s body. His heart forgot to beat.

"Wh... what are you saying?" Himanshu stammered. "Why would I lie to her?"

"Look bro, I know you inside out," Shyam said in a deep, piercing voice. "No matter how hard you try to make your face look normal, your body gives it all away. You are telling me all these lies because you don’t want me to meet her. And obviously, that’s going to bring out your truth... that she isn’t your girlfriend."

After hearing this, Himanshu knew his lie wasn’t going to hold up much longer. When someone knows so much about you since childhood, it’s really hard to lie to them... especially to someone like Shyam.

Himanshu made one last desperate attempt to save the situation. "It’s not like that, bro... she really is my GF. You always end up breaking couples apart, that’s why I didn’t want you to meet her."

Shyam let out a light laugh and started walking toward the main gate. Without looking back as he left, he said in a cold voice, "If it’s a fake relationship, I will end it right there. I don’t want my sweet, innocent aunt to invest her feelings into a relationship built purely on lies."

The sound of the door opening echoed, and Himanshu just stood there, watching him leave.

Idiot! Why did I even have to call her my GF in front of Mom? Himanshu was getting mad at himself. I don’t know how many more lies I’ll have to tell to keep this up. Maybe Shyam is right... I should just tell Mom the whole truth. Since when did I sink this low? I am really turning into such an insecure person.

Shyam was just about to step out of the main gate when something suddenly clicked in Himanshu’s brain. How did this detective give up so easily?

"Wait!" Himanshu called out. "’She isn’t here right now’... how did you believe that so quickly?"

Shyam stopped at the doorway. He looked back and gave a wicked smile.

"When I was taking off my shoes to put on the slippers... I noticed that the shoe rack only had your mom’s and your slippers and shoes. Nothing belonging to a third girl."

And then... click! The door shut from the outside.

Himanshu let out a massive sigh of relief. Thank God!

A sudden laugh escaped him. Sometimes being too smart becomes the reason for your own defeat, Mr. Detective!

To tell Demon Queen all about this, Himanshu quickly turned around and dashed toward his room. He hurriedly threw his bedroom door open.

The moment he stepped inside, his eyes landed on Demon Queen. In her hands were some papers pulled out from Himanshu’s drawer, and she was reading them very closely.

And the second Himanshu realized exactly what was in her hands... his face turned red from pure embarrassment. He totally lost his mind.

"Stop!!" he screamed like a madman and lunged forward.

But now... it was way too late.
