Himanshu kept walking behind the Demon, holding that polybag in his hand. He was still laughing in his mind, remembering the stupid thing she had just done with the phone. The effect of that laughter and his newfound sense of superiority was so strong that he couldn’t even feel the horrific pain of his anymore.
This was because, for the first time in his entire life, he had seen a ’loser’ bigger than himself! Otherwise, he was always the one getting embarrassed in front of everyone. Sometimes for getting low marks in exams, and sometimes for not being able to understand normal conversations.
But then... Himanshu’s footsteps suddenly slowed down.
Today, he had seen something new—how people actually look at an ’idiot’. He carefully watched the Demon walking ahead of him. And right then, he suddenly understood why people laughed at him, and why it always hurt so deep inside.
’The answer is simple... not understanding other people’s situation, or always putting your own superior feeling above the person in front of you.’
The moment this thought hit him, Himanshu froze.
’So, am I doing the exact same thing? The same thing people have done to me all this time?’
Himanshu’s foot stopped right in mid-air. Something broke inside him. A very new, very pure, and mature feeling that he had just experienced. A feeling that was giving him a strange sense of peace from within...
But the very next second... Jerk!
The moment he placed his suspended foot on the ground, the horrific pain of his shot through his veins all over again. All his ’deep thoughts’ went straight out the window.
Now, he didn’t see some ’loser idiot like Himanshu’ standing in front of him. He just saw a Demon who was struggling hard to understand this completely new world. This all happened so fast that he didn’t even realize his foot was still hanging in the air a second ago.
Picking up his pace, Himanshu started matching footsteps with the Demon.
The Demon was still looking straight ahead, walking in her usual Queen-like attitude. But her attitude didn’t bother Himanshu anymore. His eyes were just focused on her—he could see her restlessness in trying to understand this weird world, and now, he was actually feeling pity for her situation.
Himanshu’s face went blank and innocent again, but this time, it wasn’t out of helplessness. It was out of pity and sympathy.
Right then, the Demon glanced at him and asked in her cold voice,
"Why did you make that weird face again?"
Her bluntness was so sudden that Himanshu stumbled and barely saved himself from falling flat on his face.
’Son of a...! Grumbling in his mind, he steadied himself.
"Nothing," Himanshu said, standing up straight.
’She didn’t even care, and here I was thinking all sorts of deep things in my head,’ he thought, cursing himself.
After pausing for a few seconds, he looked at the Demon again and said in a low voice,
"Sorry."
The Demon stopped for a second. She looked at Himanshu, and then... without saying a single word, she turned back and kept walking.
Himanshu stood there like a statue.
’Did... did she just ignore me?!’
Clenching his fists, Himanshu screamed in his mind, ’I shouldn’t have even talked to this rock! At least ask me why I said sorry!’
Keeping this anger to himself, Himanshu kept grumbling and muttering under his breath the entire way. His anger was so intense that he forgot about the terrible pain in his legs all over again.
And along with this anger, the tension of the problem waiting for them at home was hitting his brain like a hammer. He had thought that he would go home and tell everyone the absolute truth about who the Demon was. But looking at the current situation, he couldn’t tell them even if he wanted to.
And the moment his eyes fell on his building... a cold wave of dread ran through his body. It didn’t look like a home anymore; it felt like a slaughterhouse where Shyam was waiting for him. His heartbeat spiked instantly. He remembered Shyam.
Just then, the Demon’s strict voice came from the front,
"Did your leg bones break again? Why are you frozen there?"
The Demon had stopped walking ahead because Himanshu was rooted to the spot after seeing the building. Himanshu cursed himself again. ’Shit! I didn’t even tell her what Shyam said to me this morning!’
He panicked and tried to explain everything to the Demon. He forced the words out of his mouth with great difficulty—
"We... we’re not going home."
The Demon placed both her hands on her hips and said fearlessly, full of attitude,
"Stop talking nonsense. I told you before... whatever happens, we’ll deal with it. If your brother talks too much, we’ll deal with him right there. After all, I want to see for myself... exactly who this brother of yours is."
