My Girlfriend Is a Demon Queen

Chapter 35: this is my life. My love. My work.

Dragging that heavy folding bed from the other room to his own with his weak body was honestly nothing short of a punishment for Himanshu. Sweat was dripping from his forehead and he was panting heavily. But the biggest problem wasn’t shifting the bed, it was listening to the weird rules of the Demon sitting on the bed like a queen.

"First..." the Demon said, glaring at Himanshu with her cold red eyes, "don’t even think about sitting on my bed. Second... the room lights stay off at night. And third..." She narrowed her eyes for a second, like she was saying something extremely serious, "you have to wear a ’condom’ every day."

Sitting exhausted on the edge of his bed, Himanshu choked and coughed violently the moment he heard that. His entire face turned red like a tomato in a single second. He looked at the Demon with wide, shocked eyes.

Well, Himanshu had hoped that the Demon would have understood some basic things about this world by now. But hearing this line, he was absolutely sure that she hadn’t understood anything other than the money here, the violence on TV, or those weird ads.

Obviously, Himanshu didn’t agree with these things at all. He was never going to follow that ’condom’ rule in his entire life (not like he was ever going to be in a situation to use one anyway). And the second thing was—turning off the lights while sleeping.

Actually, Himanshu always wrote the pages of his novel in the silence of the night. He had never felt the need for a separate table lamp before, but now he realized he was going to need one. But since he didn’t have a single penny in his pocket, he straight up refused to follow this light rule.

Anyway, those were the Demon’s rules. But Himanshu also gathered some courage and put some of his own rules in front of the Demon. Though, his voice didn’t have that punch, so these rules sounded less like rules and more like ’requests’.

"No snoring. No loud chewing or smacking noises at night. And lastly... keep yourself properly covered while sleeping."

And exactly as Himanshu had thought... the Demon ignored all three of his requests like she hadn’t heard a thing. She just sat there with her arms crossed over her chest. A little while later, she shamelessly sat on her bed and started eating the leftover food like a total glutton, making loud smacking noises, completely ignoring Himanshu.

Well, Himanshu got a place to sleep back in his own room, that was a big deal in itself. That’s why, without taking all these things to his head, he started straightening the pages of his novel with his own hands, the ones that got wet and crumpled yesterday because of the water spill.

So much had happened to him in the last two-three days that he didn’t even get the time to write a single word on his novel. Besides, even if he sat down to write, he wouldn’t be able to write anything. Because to write a novel, peace and feeling good mentally are very important. And when an 8000-year-old Demon Queen is living in your room... just drop the hope of feeling ’good’. But time teaches you how to tolerate every situation and live in it.

The moment the Demon finished her food, she did exactly what she said in her rules without saying a word.

Click!

The room light went off.

The moonlight coming through the window was bright enough to clearly show the black shadows of the things kept inside.

Himanshu took a deep breath, gritting his teeth. He reached his hand out to ask for the phone, so he could at least write something by turning on its flashlight. But a few seconds later, he realized there was a blue light falling on the Demon’s face in the dark. The Demon already had his phone and was watching that same ’Discovery Channel’ on it at full volume.

Flicking his messy hair away from his forehead with a jerk, a frustrated sigh escaped Himanshu’s mouth. He got up and turned the room light back on with a click.

"Why did you turn the light on?" The Demon’s red eyes narrowed slightly because of the light.

"If you’re not sleeping, why turn it off?"

"Because I like the dark," the Demon said in her flat voice. "And anyway, what’s it to you if I turn it off or not?"

Clenching his fists, Himanshu was about to say something, but then a thought popped into his head. Arguing with this demon meant hitting his own foot with an axe. So, controlling his anger, he thought he should try to talk to her as sweetly as possible. Who knows, maybe the magic of love might just work?

"Look... I’ll get a lamp in a few days. Until then, do whatever you want, I won’t stop you. But please leave the room light on. If you really want it off, at least give me my phone back."

The Demon kept listening to all this without blinking. When no answer came from her side for a few seconds, a weird hope woke up in his mind. He felt like he had caught some weakness of the Demon—that maybe talking sweetly lets you get your way with her.

"Stop talking nonsense."

The Demon’s cold and strict voice threw cold water over all of Himanshu’s hopes.

"The light stays off. And I’m keeping the phone."

Pointing her finger at those crumpled papers of Himanshu’s novel, bringing a weird mocking expression to her face, she said, "And anyway, why should I do all this for that garbage novel?"

Garbage...

This one word landed in Himanshu’s ears like melted glass.

"It might be garbage to you..." Himanshu’s voice wasn’t soft anymore. It had a weird heaviness and a slight tremble.

"But to me... this is my life. My love. My work." Himanshu’s fists clenched so tight that his nails started digging into his palms. "This is my identity. This is what will one day rip this ’loser’ tag off me for good. And I don’t give a damn if people like it or not!"

That heavy feeling buried in his mind for years, which he could never say to anyone, he spilled it out in front of that Demon in a single breath today.

This happened because he hadn’t gotten any reaction to his novel for years. Just like the guys at school, the world also ignored his novel. Today, for the first time, someone gave a reaction to his work... even though it was an insult, it was still better than ’saying nothing’.

The Demon just kept staring at Himanshu. On her cold, emotionless face, a hint of surprise showed up for the very first time.

She thought Himanshu would make some logical or cowardly excuse to justify himself like always. But she saw this raw, emotional side of Himanshu for the first time.

The Demon just kept listening to his words. Because to answer such deep emotions of a human, she didn’t have any words.

Gathering the papers and putting them in the drawer under the table, Himanshu quietly laid down on his bed without saying anything.

The room light was turned off again. Himanshu just kept staring at the ceiling in the dark. Don’t know why, but today he felt really light from the inside. Almost like he had thrown away some huge rock placed on his chest.

...

He didn’t even realize when the night passed. Morning was the same routine as every day. But today, one thing had changed.

Whenever he looked at the Demon, he felt something different. Being around her didn’t give him fear anymore, but a weird kind of peace. Like she was a mirror, showing him his every right and wrong image without any judgment.

Anyway, today he had decided that he would gather the courage to say ’sorry’ to Priya. The Demon’s words had somehow made an impact on his brain.

’After the stunt I pulled in class, Priya—who ignores guys anyway—is going to ice me out completely. Or worse... she’ll abuse her monitor powers to humiliate me in front of everyone.’ These thoughts just kept looping in Himanshu’s mind as he walked toward his class with heavy steps. ’I’m already at rock bottom in everyone’s eyes anyway, how much lower can she really drag me?’

But the moment he entered the class, all this fear vanished into thin air. He thought everyone would be staring at him today too like yesterday, but... the class completely ignored him like always. Everyone was just busy talking to each other or doing their own work like every day. Nobody had the time for a loser named Himanshu.

His eyes went straight to Priya’s seat. He thought Priya would be waiting for him so she could take her anger out. He had decided to go straight to her and say sorry the moment he entered the class.

But as soon as his eyes landed on Priya, his feet stopped right there. Priya was laughing loudly about something with her friend Monica and some other girls. Her face was completely normal, like nothing even happened yesterday.

Seeing her laughing face, Himanshu changed his mind.

Without saying anything, he quietly went and sat on his chair. He was just thinking why Priya didn’t turn to look at him even once? Maybe the Demon was right.

Well, even after a few periods passed, Priya didn’t turn back to look at him even once.

’Whatever happens, happens. I’ve been single my whole life anyway. If nothing works out, I’ll just stay that way.’ Thinking this, he took a deep breath and decided that he would say sorry to her alone during lunchtime.

And right then... the lunch bell rang.
