After a few tense seconds of absolutely nothing happening, Himanshu slowly, fearfully opened his eyes.
The Demon queen was repeatedly clenching and unclenching her fists, like her powers had suddenly short-circuited.
Looking at her face, it was obvious she had lost her abilities. Then it hit him. The Demon’s powers came from that magic stone. And that stone didn’t exist in his world.
Which meant... he was going to live!
Himanshu, who was practically begging for his life a second ago, suddenly puffed out his chest and stood tall. But in the very next moment, all that fake confidence vanished, leaving him looking like a scared cat.
Because the Demon had just grabbed him by the throat. Again.
"Tell me. What did you do to me?"
What? Himanshu didn’t get it at first. Oh, right. She wasn’t from this world.
"You stole my powers, didn’t you? Tell me!"
His brain just shut down completely. Could this get any worse? Oh man, I’m actually dead this time.
With his windpipe crushed, only violent coughs escaped his mouth. The poor guy desperately wanted to speak but couldn’t form a single word.
He started waving his hands wildly, trying to explain using gestures. Barely understanding his frantic motions, she loosened her grip just a bit.
Dammit! What kind of mess did I get into?
"No, no, you’ve got it all wrong!"
Himanshu gasped.
"I didn’t steal your powers."
"Tell the truth, or do I crush your neck for real?"
"I am telling the truth! You have to believe me. Your magic stone isn’t here in this world, that’s why your powers aren’t working. Trust me!"
Hearing this, the Demon instantly tightened her grip around his throat again.
"How do you know our powers come from that stone? Who else knows about this?"
Oh crap, that was her biggest secret.
I’m such an idiot.
"You’re... you’re a character from a book here! I don’t know how you got out!"
"What nonsense are you babbling? Looks like you won’t talk easily." She squeezed harder.
Himanshu couldn’t breathe at all now. His vision was starting to blur.
"Your... your real mother... is Eargel..."
The Demon’s eyes shot wide open. She quickly looked away, as if she had just heard the one thing she desperately wanted to keep buried.
Her hands instantly went weak.
Himanshu took a massive, greedy gasp of air.
Thank god I read the part about Eargel. And why wouldn’t I?She was gorgeous.
He could clearly see how disturbed the Demon was. After all, it wasn’t a small secret.
"Who are you?" she asked, her voice shaking slightly. "How do you know so much about me?"
"Look, this is going to be really hard for you to believe, but it’s the truth. How do I even explain this..."
Just then, his eyes fell under the bed. The book, The Demon queen, was lying there face down on the floor. "Just give me a chance. I’ll tell you everything."
As Himanshu moved to pick up the book, the Demon’s gaze wandered to the walls of his bedroom.
They were ridiculously small compared to her grand palace. Everything in here looked completely alien to her, things she had never seen in her entire life. Then, her attention shifted to the window, drawn by the sounds of rushing cars and the noisy crowd outside. These sounds were entirely new to her, constantly buzzing in her ears.
Just as Himanshu picked up the fallen book, the Demon pushed the window open.
The sight outside pulled the ground right out from under her feet. She had conquered every city in her world, but what she was looking at right now was something she couldn’t have imagined even in her wildest dreams.
She was on the seventh floor, and right across the street stood a massive 200-story skyscraper, reflecting the bright sunlight straight back at her.
The strange metal boxes moving on the ground and the chaotic noises coming from them were slowly proving Himanshu’s crazy words right. For a split second, she hoped this was all just a bad dream. It had to be. She slapped her own arm hard.
But it was real. Her feet slowly backed away from the window, her brain completely refusing to process what she was seeing.
Himanshu just stood behind her, holding the book. He quickly realized he didn’t even need to show it to her anymore. He could see the sheer mental shock she was going through.
If you suddenly found out that your entire existence—your relationships, the rules, friendships, love, your whole world—was just a made-up story... what was even left to live for?
The Demon, completely zoned out, took another step back and bumped straight into Himanshu. Her body felt cold and lifeless, like a corpse.
"Are... are you okay?"
She already had all her answers, but her mind just wouldn’t accept it. She quickly snatched the book right out of Himanshu’s hands. As she flipped through the pages, reading her own history, everything happening in her present, and every single battle she was destined to fight in the future... she was left with no reason to call this a lie.
"Am I just a fictional character?
Did someone just... write me?
No... that’s impossible."
She muttered to herself. "And even if it is, what does it matter?
If I can just find a way back to my world, everything will go back to normal."
A girl’s entire existence had just crumbled right in front of Himanshu. Sure, she was a terrifying Demon, but what did that matter right now? Mustering up whatever courage he had left, he placed a shaking hand on her shoulder to comfort her.
The Demon slowly turned. Her deep rad eyes glared at Himanshu, looking like she was going to end his life right then and there.
Oh crap, I was just trying to comfort her! Think fast! Himanshu quickly pulled his hand away.
"You! You are the reason for all of this!"
"What?
Me?"
Trembling, Himanshu took two steps back, holding his hands up in defense.
"Wait a second... we can just talk this out."
"What did you just say? Say that again." The Demon lunged at him. This time, she looked like she was going to snap his neck for real.
"I... I can send you—" Before he could finish, her hand wrapped around his throat again. "—back to your world! I can send you back!"
She loosened her grip slightly. "What proof do you have?"
"I brought you here, didn’t I? I can send you back the exact same way!"
He just blurted it out to save his own life. He honestly had zero idea how he was going to actually do it. But since the Demon had no other options, she finally let him go. Himanshu dropped to his knees on the floor, taking long, heavy breaths to steady himself.
But a sudden knock and a voice coming from outside his bedroom door made his eyes widen in pure horror.
"What was all that noise... Himanshu, are you okay?"
"M—Mom."
A shaky whisper escaped Himanshu’s mouth.
