He was certain now that the queen ant had already noticed his presence.

Mental Power fluctuations were no different from brightly lit beacons pointing directly toward their owner.

The problem was that he currently had no way to "turn off the light."

Fortunately, Joo Joowon had not simply been standing around doing nothing while the flying ants were mating.

Throughout the entire process, he had continuously compressed his Mental Power around himself as well as around the two cats, wrapping all three of them inside it in an effort to reduce their presence to the absolute minimum.

Because of that, unless someone deliberately focused on sensing him, the Mental Power fluctuations he emitted at the moment were roughly comparable to those of a Level 2 or Level 3 flying type Mutated Beast.

It was not enough for the queen ant inside the nest to perceive him as a threat.

The queen ant’s Mental Power had never been intended to target enemies in the first place.

It was merely being used to transmit commands.

As a result, even though Joo Joowon’s own use of Mental Power remained relatively crude, the queen ant might not necessarily notice him at all.

What was truly strange was that despite the queen ant’s Mental Power not being directed toward him, Joo Joowon still managed to capture the information hidden within those mental fluctuations that had been intended for the flying ants.

The general meaning was quite simple.

Only the number of female ants that could survive long enough to fully digest the crystallized heart would be allowed to continue living.

The rest, whether dead or alive, would all be brought back to the colony and turned into food reserves.

Joo Joowon guessed that this was probably because the queen ant had not bothered encrypting the information she transmitted.

As a result, as long as someone came into contact with that Mental Power and was not a complete "Muggle," they would be capable of receiving at least some of the information hidden within the fluctuations.

The only real requirement seemed to be the strength of one’s Mental Power and one’s mastery over its usage.

Without question, any monster capable of becoming a Boss only a short time after the apocalypse began must possess extraordinary talent in at least one field.

The queen ant was undoubtedly a true genius when it came to Mental Power.

It was not as though Joo Joowon had never considered communicating with Byeol and Hwi through Mental Power before.

The problem was that he could hardly learn how to run before he had learned how to walk.

Without any references or guidance, his progress in this area had been practically nonexistent.

Now, however, seeing the queen ant’s use of Mental Power had given him a certain degree of inspiration.

Only a little inspiration, unfortunately.

He still found it difficult to imagine how one was supposed to "write" information onto Mental Power and then transmit it outward through that medium.

Was it based on emotions?

If only there were a skill book for this or perhaps a teacher capable of teaching the proper methods of using Mental Power.

The unrealistic fantasy was quickly crushed by Joo Joowon himself.

He shifted his gaze toward the female ants, who had resumed fighting among themselves after receiving the queen ant’s orders.

From time to time, flying ants fell from the sky one after another, as though a black rain were falling from above.

Perhaps because the queen ant’s orders were involved, this round of slaughter was even more intense than the earlier nuptial flight battles.

It could be described as fighting without the slightest regard for whether they themselves would be injured or killed.

With Joo Joowon’s current eyesight, he could clearly see that they were genuinely risking their lives.

Could a single command really achieve this level of obedience?

Was the queen ant’s control over the colony truly this overwhelming?

Joo Joowon felt that was unlikely.

After all, the queen ant’s mental fluctuations had not contained anything extra within them.

That much he could tell.

After thinking about it for a moment, realization suddenly struck him.

It was probably pheromones.

Many insects in the animal kingdom relied on pheromones to command their colonies.

Ants were like this.

Bees were like this as well.

The queen ant’s use of Mental Power had almost made Joo Joowon forget that queens had always directed their colonies through pheromones in the past.

On top of that, as a human, he could not smell the scent of ant pheromones at all, so he had naturally overlooked this detail.

No wonder he could not detect any form of coercion or manipulation within the Mental Power itself and instead only sensed a very straightforward transmission of information.

The queen ant had already been using pheromones to accomplish the actual control.

But if pheromones already existed, then why use Mental Power at all?

Wasn’t that redundant?

After observing for a while longer, Joo Joowon suddenly understood.

The pheromones were used to make the flying ants fight one another.

The Mental Power, however, was being used to filter out the more intelligent individuals among them.

Simply put, it was selecting the female ants whose Mental Power attributes were naturally higher and who possessed greater cunning.

Almost all of them circled around the outer edges.

At first glance they appeared just as frenzied as the others, but careful observation revealed that they had never once joined the fiercest areas of combat.

Instead, whenever a female ant was on the verge of collapse, they would immediately rush over to tear into it.

And the moment too many female ants began approaching them, they would instantly retreat back toward the outermost perimeter.

Among them, the especially outstanding individuals appeared to be completely unaffected by the pheromones at all.

They had been conserving their strength the entire time, deliberately avoiding the fighting and never once taking the initiative to attack.

Individuals like these were undoubtedly excellent. In Joo Joowon’s eyes, however, they were also the most unqualified.
