The demon king held the nine-sword relic firmly. His dark mana flowed through the thick metal chains, and the ancient artifact reacted immediately, floating mere centimeters from his heavy, furry hand.

The nine small swords began to spin on themselves at breakneck speed, creating a sharp, piercing hum that made the shattered hall’s cold air vibrate.

Ryan tensed every muscle in his body, gripping the hilts of his two large swords and preparing to dodge any kind of projectile or magical attack.

But the physical attack never came.

Instead, the divine relic released an immense, silent pulse of golden light that expanded throughout the hall like an invisible wave. The strange energy passed through Ryan’s body without causing absolutely any physical damage, pain, or dizziness.

For a microsecond, Ryan thought the artifact had failed or that his magical resistance had withstood the blow.

But then, he felt a drastic and terrifying change in his own hands.

The powerful Chimera sword in his right hand, which normally felt reassuringly solid in his grip, suddenly felt almost weightless, as if he were holding a feather.

At the same time, the epic sword in his left hand suffered exactly the same fate. Its magical glow disappeared completely, and the comforting hum of power the weapons always emitted was silenced into absolute nothingness.

Ryan tried to inject his own mana into the hilts to force their activation, but it was completely useless. The weapons were dead.

’What the hell is this...’ Ryan thought, staring at his deadened weapons with wide eyes. ’It is as if it were an ordinary weapon. Is that relic responsible for this? Is that... the church’s countermeasure Chloe told us about?’ Ryan deduced.

’That damn deity, giving something like that to a demon king...’

"I told you very clearly, human. You will not make it out of this castle alive," the demon king roared, propelling his massive body forward at a speed that broke the sound barrier.

The monster raised his long, sharp claws, aiming straight for Ryan’s neck to decapitate him in a single slash.

Without functional magical weapons, but fully trusting the immense resilience of the Chimera’s blade, Ryan raised his right sword to block the lethal frontal attack, using his left arm as support to withstand the immense impending impact.

The clash echoed in the hall like a thunderclap.

But the result was catastrophic.

Without the constant flow of magic reinforcing its structure, the Chimera sword was no longer an indestructible object. It was nothing more than ordinary steel against the brute force of the demons’ absolute ruler.

The thick dark steel blade cracked instantly and burst into hundreds of sharp pieces that went flying through the air.

The impact shattered Ryan’s guard, and before he could back away, Rigal twisted his immense torso and landed a brutal backhand with the back of his hand against Ryan’s epic sword. The epic-grade weapon suffered the same tragic fate, snapping cleanly in half with a dry, pitiful sound.

Ryan was thrown through the air like a ragdoll, rolling violently across the shattered floor until he crashed against the base of the wall.

"Ha ha ha." The demon king walked slowly toward him, stepping on the broken pieces of the useless swords.

"What is the matter, supposed hero? Did the gods abandon you at the most critical moment? Without your little toys, you are just a fragile piece of meat. You might as well be my dinner."

Ryan spat a little blood onto the floor and slowly stood up.

His main weapons were completely destroyed. He had no way to block the slashes of the enemy claws, and the demon king vastly outmatched him in physical strength. The disadvantage was abysmal, almost suicidal.

But Ryan was not going to simply surrender.

He clenched both fists with superhuman strength. If his weapons were broken, he would have to use his own body and his innate skills.

"Fire Aura," Ryan pronounced with a deep, determined voice.

An immensely dense, bright, and scorching fire enveloped both fists, illuminating his blood and dust-stained face.

"Do you still have the strength to try and bite, little rat?" Rigal mocked, baring his fangs.

Ryan did not answer. He disappeared from his spot in a burst of speed and appeared right on the demon king’s blind side.

With a perfect twist of his waist, Ryan landed a right hook directly into the immense beastman’s ribs. The fiery punch erupted with overwhelming force, burning the gray fur and creating a shockwave that cracked the nearest wall.

Rigal growled, but did not take a single step back.

Instead of complaining about the pain, the demon king’s yellow eyes shone with immense fury and darkness.

"Your little flames are absolutely nothing against true darkness," Rigal declared.

An immense, suffocating amount of heavy, dark mana burst from the demon king’s body, covering him like a second skin. Rigal reached out his immense hand and, with terrifying speed, grabbed Ryan’s flaming fist right in the middle of his next attack.

Rigal’s dense darkness enveloped Ryan’s arm completely. And with a simple squeeze of his hand, the demon king extinguished the gloves’ powerful flames as if he were putting out a simple wooden match.

The fire died in an instant, smothered by the overwhelming pressure of demonic magic.

Ryan widened his eyes in immense surprise upon feeling his attack neutralized so easily. He tried to break free from the grip, but the beast’s strength was like a hydraulic press crushing his wrist bones.

Rigal raised his free claw and landed a brutal swipe directly on Ryan’s chest.

The impact shredded what was left of his white combat suit, tearing his skin and launching the human across the hall.

Ryan crashed heavily against a ruined column, falling to his knees on the rubble and coughing up a large amount of dark blood.

His vision blurred for a moment, the pain in his chest was agonizing, and his lungs desperately demanded air. His swords were broken. His flames had been extinguished. He was completely cornered.

The demon king advanced heavily toward him, raising his claw to deliver the final coup de grâce and pierce the stubborn human’s skull.

"This is your end," Rigal declared coldly.

And just when everything seemed absolutely and hopelessly lost in the dark first-floor hall.

A sharp, unmistakable whistle cut through the room’s cold air. It was the sound of a metallic object spinning at extreme speed, breaking the wind barrier.

Rigal barely had time to turn his massive head toward the source of the sound.

A massive, solid blow impacted directly against the demon king’s cheek and shoulder. The strike was so absurdly heavy, fast, and surprising that it managed to throw the monster’s immense bulk off balance, forcing Rigal to take two clumsy steps backward to keep from falling to the floor, losing his chance to kill Ryan.

Ryan, despite his pain, looked up instantly. He perfectly recognized that sound, that shape, and that destructive impact.

The strange flying object bounced off the demon’s tough skin and returned spinning at full speed toward the ruined hall’s main entrance.

A firm, gloved, and highly familiar hand rose in the gloom and caught the spinning weapon in mid-air with absolute precision and calm, stopping the metallic whistle dead.

Ryan’s eyes widened, forgetting the pain of his broken ribs for a second upon seeing the figure standing in the entrance.

Her characteristic short dark hair, her relaxed posture yet ready to kill at any second, and that unmistakable aura of unwavering confidence that always surrounded her.

Helen.

And just a few meters away was the figure of another person.

It was Chloe, the holy knight woman, kneeling on the floor, sweat all over her face and panting, as if she had exhausted all her energy.

Helen had just entered the combat, saving her leader’s life at the last possible millisecond and holding the immense boomerang firmly in her right hand.

’What the hell is she doing here?’ Ryan thought, feeling a strange mix of relief and anger upon seeing her. ’She was supposed to stay guarding the villa. I myself had ordered her as punishment not to come to this war.’

Unfazed at all by the monstrous, terrifying presence of the demon king glaring furiously at her from the other side of the hall, Helen walked with calm and confident steps until stopping right in front of Ryan, placing herself between the monster and her leader.

She did not turn to look at his face. Helen kept her back to Ryan, offering him total protection with her own body.

With a highly casual movement, she rested the heavy boomerang against her own back, holding it with one hand in a relaxed but defensive posture.

The demon king growled, preparing to charge the new intruder who had ruined his perfect strike.

Helen tilted her head back slightly, feeling Ryan’s presence behind her, and spoke to him with her usual sarcastic tone, loyal and devoid of any kind of fear of death.

"It seems things got a little out of control around here, Ryan," Helen said with a slight smile on her face, keeping her eyes fixed on the demon king.

"I told you many times that trying to leave me behind and do all the boring work by yourself was a very bad idea."
