[You’ll turn thirteen at midnight tomorrow. Excited?]

[You have no idea! I’m getting wet just thinking about finally leaving this boring life behind!]

[Since tomorrow’s your last day on Earth, how about we spend it together? You know, so I can have one last good memory of you before you disappear forever.]

[That’s exactly what I was about to ask you! Let’s do this: pick me up outside school tomorrow at 2:30 PM. And don’t you dare be even a minute late.]

[I won’t be late, don’t worry. See you tomorrow.]

[See you tomorrow, my super-duper beloved Axel.]

That was the text conversation Melania and I had last night.

I figured she’d want to spend the day with me just as much as I wanted to spend it with her, so I had no doubt she’d say yes.

But wanting one last fuck before we say goodbye isn’t the only reason I asked her out.

There’s something much more important.

I left school two hours early so I could make it to my plans with Melania on time.

But as I’m walking down Lexington Avenue — where both Ordrienne High and Melania’s school are located — something at the outdoor tables of an upscale restaurant catches my eye.

I freeze on the spot, paralyzed by fear and shock.

Sitting at one of the tables are Frank Pyton, Philip Serghel, a young woman I’ve never seen before with ash-blonde hair streaked with blue tied into a bun and glasses — some kind of secretary or something — and... my mother!

W-Why...?

Why the hell is my mother having lunch with that bastard Frank Pyton?!

Shit! Shit!

That fucking son of a bitch did exactly what I was afraid he’d do — he’s started going after the people I care about too, probably so he can use them against me!

I can’t let Veronica get dragged into this!

A wave of anger and worry sends me straight toward them.

"Oh, Axel, what a surprise to see you here... but shouldn’t you be at school right now?" Veronica asks suspiciously.

"And shouldn’t you be at work?" I shoot back, irritated — not at her, obviously, but at Frank.

"You do realize I am working, right? And now you’re making me look bad in front of our new investors!" Veronica snaps, stern but still composed.

"N-New investors...?" I repeat, slowly turning my gaze toward Frank.

He answers with a faint smile.

"Mr. Pyton here is a forward-thinking businessman who had the good sense to recognize the exceptional profit opportunities that only a solid, steadily growing company like Seiryu Biotech can offer," Veronica explains with the calm professionalism you’d expect from a CEO of her caliber.

"You must be Ms. Lustsilk’s son, right?" Frank cuts in, sounding just as formal as he offers me his hand. "Your mother already introduced me, but it’d still be rude not to introduce myself properly. My name is Frank Pyton, and these are my assistants — Philip Serghal and Miss Clarissa Felmont. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Axel Lustsilk."

In a way, I don’t know whether I should feel relieved or worried that Frank and Philip are pretending they’ve never met me — and of course, I fully intend to play along.

Still, I don’t get it...

Someone like Frank doesn’t need to set up and maintain some fake business deal just to get close to my mother and use her to blackmail me.

So then... what’s the point of all this?

Could this really just be a perfectly normal business lunch with no hidden agenda?

That would be way too much of a coincidence... and yet, that’s exactly what it looks like!

Come to think of it, it’s not even that crazy for the biggest organized crime boss in America to be interested in making a deal with the American branch of a Japanese pharmaceutical giant.

Maybe that’s really all this is...

Nothing supernatural, nothing aimed at me — just a criminal trying to make money.

At this point, I might as well pretend nothing’s going on.

I’m sure that if there’s anything legally shady going on behind the scenes, my mother will figure it out on her own.

"My name is Axel Lustsilk, and as you guessed, I’m Veronica’s son," I reply, forcing myself to sound as calm and formal as possible while firmly shaking Frank’s hand.

Then I quickly glance at the girl sitting with them.

Clarissa Felmont... who the hell is she?

I’ve never seen her or even heard her name before.

Whoever she is, she must be pretty damn capable — she can’t be older than twenty, yet she’s sitting at a business meeting discussing things with someone as experienced in economics and finance as my mother?

Frank really knows how to pick his subordinates...

And I have to admit, she’s pretty cute too — she reminds me a lot of Miss Amelia Archer, just younger.

Oh, fuck, Axel. This is not the time to get distracted by shit like that!

"Anyway, I didn’t like that intrusive attitude of yours one bit!" Veronica continues, a hint of irritation in her voice. "Luckily, Mr. Pyton is smart enough not to let your interruption affect his judgment, but someone else might not have appreciated your behavior. You could’ve cost us a nine-figure deal! Get ready, Axel — you’re in for a serious lecture tonight, both for what just happened and for being out of school when classes don’t end for another two hours!"

"A-Actually, I’m supposed to be at that birthday party tonight..." I mumble, intimidated.

"Oh, right, your friend’s birthday. Tell her you’re not so sure you’ll be going anymore. I’ll think about it, and later, once I’m not so angry, I’ll let you know whether you can go or not!"

"Y-Yes, Mom. Sorry..."

"Come on, don’t be so hard on him, Ms. Lustsilk," Frank cuts in. "After all, it’s only natural for a son to worry about his mother. You should be happy about that, shouldn’t you?"

Veronica lets out a deep sigh.

"Yes, I suppose you’re right, Mr. Pyton..."

Then she turns that sharp look back on me.

"Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have a business lunch to finish."

Message received loud and clear — she wants me gone.

"Have a good day, young man. And make sure you enjoy the party tonight," Frank adds with an unsettling smile.

I know exactly what’s behind that smile, considering Melania’s birthday party... is going to be held at Frank’s mansion.
