"If I were that zebra, my beloved Axy, instead of choosing whether to side with the hunter or the tiger, I’d make the safest and most logical choice. I’d side with both of them."

"Side with both of them...? What do you mean? I made you come, so stop beating around the bush."

"Ugh... I never thought I’d have such a naive son... Do I really have to spell it all out for you? If the zebra led the hunter to the tiger’s den, but at the same time warned the tiger that the hunter was coming, what do you think would happen?"

"Of course... If the hunter killed the tiger, the zebra would come out clean because it honored their deal. But if the tiger won, it would be grateful to the zebra for the warning... You’re a genius, Mom!"

Veronica has saved my life twice.

The first time was when she adopted me.

The second was when she pulled me out of this seemingly impossible mess.

The only real sticking point was the kill order on my head.

Even if Kimberly died, the bounty on me would still remain, and other Monster Slayers would simply come after me in her place.

And yet, Kimberly herself had inadvertently given me a way out of that problem too.

She’d told me about the immunity Frank Pyton enjoyed — about the strings he could pull at the very top of HESPARC U.S..

"Frank, someone extremely powerful is going to try to kill you tonight. I’ve learned there’s a kill order out on me. If you want to know more about the attempt on your life, have your contacts inside HESPARC get the bounty on my head revoked."

I wasn’t quite that direct, of course, but that was the gist of it.

And Frank agreed without putting up much resistance.

His almost obsessive attachment to me and his constant insistence on bringing me over to his side had always annoyed the hell out of me.

And yet, who would’ve thought that one day all of that would actually work in my favor?

At a signal from Frank, Joe and the army of orcs and dark elves surrounding Kimberly launch their attack.

The orcs charge with their massive clubs, while the dark elves make thick roots erupt from the ground, surging toward Kimberly like a nest of hundreds of snakes.

And yet, she doesn’t move.

At least, not until both the orcs and the writhing vegetation are mere inches away from her.

But the instant they’re about to strike...

WHOOOM!

A devastating wave of light erupts from her body, radiating outward in every direction with blinding intensity.

The blast is violent enough to hurl the orcs backward and pulverize the roots. Even Joe seems shaken by the impact, but it isn’t nearly enough to quell his fury.

The ogre reaches her and tries to impale her with the black spike jutting from his elbow, but Kimberly intercepts the blow with her blade of light and...

BAM!

...drives a devastating upward kick beneath his chin, powerful enough to send him crashing to the ground several meters away.

Her strength and speed are absolutely insane.

Groups of three or four orcs attack her at once, supported by the dark elves’ magic. Massive clubs rain down on her from every direction, and yet...

SLASH!

A shower of severed roots, dismembered orc limbs, and blood rains down across the battlefield.

Then she lunges toward a group of dark elves and unleashes a wide horizontal slash, cutting down five of them in a single strike.

And with every orc or elf that falls dead, my terror grows, knowing that once she’s finished with them, it’ll be my turn.

Damn it... who would’ve ever imagined Kimberly was this strong?!

"I can see you’re tense, Axel. You’ve got nothing to worry about," Philip reassures me from behind, placing a hand on my shoulder.

At the same time, from the opposite side of the battlefield, Frank gives me a small wave.

It’s insane how worried I am while he looks like the calmest person in the world.

After greeting me, Frank and the hooded woman beside him begin walking toward me at a slow, leisurely pace, as if they were out for a casual stroll while all hell breaks loose around them.

Kimberly doesn’t let the opportunity slip away.

She abandons the fight and launches herself forward like a white comet toward her true target.

She raises her sword, ready to bring it down on him, when I feel Philip’s hand slip from my shoulder. He shoots past me at full speed, and then...

CLANG!

In the blink of an eye, Philip intercepts Kimberly’s charge, blocking the Monster Slayer’s blade with the flaming spike at the end of his long tiefling tail.

Despite Philip’s extraordinary power, he and Kimberly seem perfectly evenly matched. Neither of them manages to overpower the other, until...

BAM!

A horrible scream tears from Kimberly’s throat, followed by a spray of blood, as one of Joe’s full-power punches crashes into her back.

Kimberly is sent slamming face-first into the ground, less than two meters away from me and Frank, who is now standing at my side, silently watching the battle with a smug little smile.

And yet, despite taking a blow that should’ve shattered her spine, Kimberly doesn’t seem to have any intention of giving up.

She springs back to her feet in a lightning-fast motion, ready to charge at Frank once again, when the mysterious hooded woman finally makes her move.

She stretches an arm toward the Monster Slayer and...

"Darkness Invocation: Shadow Chains!"

Before Kimberly can reach us, four thick chains, blacker than the night itself, erupt from the woman’s shadow cast across the ground and coil around each of Kimberly’s limbs, dragging her down and pinning her to the earth.

And yet, what truly shocks me isn’t the insane, unfamiliar spell she used to immobilize Kimberly in an instant.

It’s the woman’s voice.

A voice I know far too well. One I would recognize among a million others.

The voice of my stepmom, Veronica Lustsilk.
