Chapter 281: Full SilverThe false body inhaled black water and stole Caleb’s height first.
Its person-shaped interior stood inside the larger chest. Silver color spread over the copy without metal weight.
It opened Caleb’s mouth.
"All East Market evacuate west."
The voice carried his exact city-broadcast pressure.
Green arrows turned west toward Central Civic Shelter.
Caleb stood under nine thousand tons with silver beams through his shoulders.
He used no broadcast.
"Local channels verify room before voice," he said to Rina’s shelter camera.
East Market answered with separate requests.
The produce hall had sixty-two people above a feeder claw.
The tram clinic had eleven beds cut off by uphill water.
Cold storage had nine workers behind a drain body that wore Tov Ren’s voice.
Central Shelter still had six hundred people beneath the false body’s final support arm.
Four places.
Four directions.
Caleb released one silver beam from the east slab.
The roof dropped two inches.
The foundation witness and Mercy ramp took the extra load. Cracks crossed the hospital loading wall.
Caleb grew.
Silver opened from his back through Central Shelter’s broken roof. His spine rose beside the observatory ruins. One shoulder reached over East Market. His left arm became a bridge from the tram clinic to the canal roofs.
His right hand spread into a wall beneath the produce hall.
Both legs remained under the shelter slab.
His head rose above the route organisms.
The city saw a completed silver body at kaiju scale.
His height crossed the old tram clock at one hundred and twelve feet. One foot remained below Central Shelter. The other spread under two East Market streets so its pressure would not crush a single foundation.
Every movement displaced something.
His shoulder broke the observatory’s remaining weather mast. Silver roots lifted paving stones around the shelter. A row of empty food stalls folded when his elbow passed through their roofs.
Tali recorded each structure before the public feed could call the size free.
Caleb looked down through rain and steam. People were smaller than the bolts in his old suit. Local channels put names back into the scale.
No chair held it.
Rina took the produce channel.
"Sixty-two above claw. Wanted direction is east stairs to Caleb’s wall, then north lane."
Caleb raised his right palm beside the building.
People crossed onto silver fingers wider than streets. He kept the hand still while a feeder scraped its claw through his wrist.
Hana Bex stood at the base of his thumb with her burned hand wrapped against her chest. She sent groups by stall number, not all at once. Every eight people changed which finger carried weight.
The feeder claw peeled silver in strips. Each strip fell through market awnings and hardened on the road. One cut a water main. Clean water mixed with uphill black water and ran in opposite directions over the same curb.
At the tram clinic, Iseul gave eleven bed names and the canal-roof exit.
Caleb lowered his left arm.
Beds rolled over his forearm one at a time. Black water climbed after them and formed mouths along his elbow.
The damaged critical-care truck from Mercy could not reach the canal roof. Its hand-pumped patient came through the clinic instead, tube held by two nurses who had to step in matching time over Caleb’s wrist joints.
He kept the joint flat until they cleared. The false body increased roof pressure while he waited, and the silver beam through his left shoulder sank another inch.
Each mouth used his voice.
"West is safe."
Iseul kicked the nearest mouth shut with her heel.
"This elbow has no local facts. Keep rolling."
Cold storage could not see Caleb through the feeder body in its drain.
Tov struck three mattresses against the roof in an uneven sequence.
Caleb felt the impacts through water touching both of them.
"Nine workers," Tov called. "Wanted direction is vertical. Roof first. Street after somebody checks it."
Caleb grew four silver blades through the cold-storage ceiling, flat sides toward the people. The blades lifted one roof section without cutting it.
Workers climbed the tilted slab to Tov’s mattresses.
The drain feeder bit Caleb’s blade at the base.
Its teeth closed.
Silver broke.
The break reached every extension.
It also reached his senses.
Cold-storage teeth closed at his jaw though the bite was on a distant blade. The tram patient’s wheel struck his elbow and pain opened under his ribs. Sixty-two sets of feet shifted across his produce palm like pins under the skin.
He knew which body part belonged to which request because local voices kept naming them. Without those voices, all pain would have arrived as one city.
His tram arm dropped one foot.
Two patient beds rolled sideways. Iseul caught one. The other struck Caleb’s elbow rail and split a wheel.
His produce hand folded at the scraped wrist. Seven people fell to their knees on his palm.
Under Central Shelter, his left leg buckled and the roof slab moved.
One wound had entered the whole body.
Caleb drove the broken cold-storage blade down through the feeder’s jaw.
Metal opened its mouth from inside.
Black water poured over the roof.
The feeder stayed alive. Its route spine bent toward Central Shelter and pulled the embedded blade west.
Caleb let the blade separate from his body.
The distant routes stabilized.
He had lost a section of silver large enough to bridge a street.
The feeder carried it away in its jaw.
At the tram clinic, Iseul used a door as a wheel ramp. All eleven beds crossed the canal roof.
At produce, sixty-two people cleared the north lane.
Cold storage lifted nine workers through the roof.
Central Shelter’s six hundred remained under the final arm.
The rescue count reached eighty-two plus eleven beds, with three new injuries and no one routed west by Caleb’s voice.
Caleb stayed large while engineers replaced his temporary supports. Shrinking early would drop loads. Remaining large made every copied signal stronger.
Continuity posted both facts without choosing between them.
```
CALEB MERCER CURRENTLY FUNCTIONS
AS MULTI-DISTRICT SUPPORT.
UNREGISTERED COPIES ACTIVE.
IDENTITY AUTHORITY REQUIRED.
```
The silver copy inside the false body watched him.
It learned his split.
Black water spread through the discarded blade in the feeder’s mouth.
The metal turned soft.
A second Caleb pulled itself from the feeder’s jaw.
It stood twenty feet tall in East Market, silver on the surface and water underneath.
Its face matched his current wounds. A line crossed the right wrist where the produce claw had scraped. Its left arm sagged by the same foot as the tram bridge.
It had copied cost.
The copy used Caleb’s voice.
"Rina. Local channels are compromised. Route everyone through me."
Rina stayed on the shelter camera.
"What did I say after you moved 812 people?"
The copy answered, "They moved themselves."
Correct words.
Wrong speaker.
Rina had said them first. Caleb had answered that she kept them from becoming a crowd.
"Sequence wrong," Rina said. "Copy."
The copy charged her channel with silver pressure.
Every public screen tried to make it the authenticated Caleb.
Sovereign Safety selected the copy because its signal came from Central Shelter’s bounded field. Restoration selected the larger Caleb because its audience recognized the feeder-kill scars.
The foundation witness rejected both shortcuts.
With one arm, it drew a circle around the large Caleb’s east support, then a separate circle around his tram arm. It pointed at the smaller copy and drew one circle around everything.
Current action, not face or scar.
Caleb tore his head free of the observatory roof line and looked down at the smaller body.
"You copied what broke."
The copy smiled.
"That is what people believe."
It ran toward Central Shelter.
Caleb could stop it by dropping the produce wall, tram bridge, and roof supports at once.
He kept the local structures until crews reported clear.
The copy reached the false rescue body.
Kim’s chest-mouth opened.
The smaller silver Caleb climbed inside the person-shaped cavity.
Black water sealed behind it.
The false body raised its head.
Caleb’s face grew across its chest.
