My Kingdom Building Done Right!

Chapter 322: A Calm Before Another Storm

After resting for two days, the tribes started preparing to return to their respective domains.

"Let’s all meet again in the Tribal Gathering," Malik said with a smile.

"Good." Hagen nodded.

"We’ll be taking our leave." Godwin gave everyone a brief nod before shifting his gaze toward Troy. "I never had the chance to say this a few days ago, but I like how you look right now."

"Jealous?" Troy smirked. "If you’re that jealous, how about you ask Leone to give you a makeover? Maybe you’ll become more handsome than me if you do that."

"Thank you, but I’ll pass."

"It’s your loss."

Troy then eyed his rivals before crossing his arms over his chest. "I don’t really want to see all of your faces again, but I guess I still need to make a trip to Eden. I don’t want to see Leone accidentally dying for a stupid reason, after all."

Although he wasn’t referring to anyone in particular, Godwin and Malik subconsciously glanced in Hagen’s direction when they heard the lionkin’s words.

"I also don’t want any accidents to befall him," Hagen replied. "With that said, I will ask Gundar to look after him during the Tribal Gathering. That way, the three of you won’t have any reason to suspect me if something happens."

"You really just had to say that something will happen." Godwin sighed before shaking his head helplessly. "By the way, the Aurelion Empire has been active recently. They even asked if they could also participate in the upcoming Tribal Gathering."

"Ah, yes." Malik nodded. "The so-called strengthening of our diplomatic relationship."

"That’s what they say, but they keep calling us Savages." Troy sneered. "I’m sure their spies have already infiltrated Eden and are digging for information that would help them take over the city as we speak."

Hagen remained silent. They knew from history that the Aurelion Empire had always been an opportunistic neighbor.

There was even a time when the barbarians had to fight two fronts.

One in the north, the other in the south. When both the Kingdom of Britannia and the Aurelion Empire launched a raid on the Borderlands, all the tribes had to fight tooth and nail to just keep them at bay.

Fortunately, a monster stampede had happened in the north at the time, forcing the Kingdom of Britannia to withdraw.

This allowed the barbarians to rally to the south and push away the army of the Aurelion Empire.

Five years had passed since then, but the tension between the three sides never faded.

Hagen wanted to say that this was why they all needed to unite under one banner. But, since his image had taken a hit two days ago, he decided to just open this up in the upcoming Tribal Gathering.

"I know none of you will believe me when I say this, but be careful of Leone," Hagen said. "He might really be a spy planted by the Kingdom of Britannia to gain a foothold here in the Borderlands."

"And now you’re singing the same tune as me?" Troy arched an eyebrow at those words. "Why didn’t you say that a month ago?"

"Because I didn’t have proof back then," Hagen replied.

"So you’re saying that you have proof now?" Troy sneered. "Go on then. Show us that proof you speak of."

"I still don’t have proof," Hagen stated. "But I realized something. Whether he really is an ally or not, we will only know after he undertakes the Earth Mother’s test."

At this, Troy’s expression turned solemn.

Godwin, Malik, Oswald, Duncan, and Garen also turned serious.

The Trial of the Earth Goddess took place inside the Dungeon of Eden. It was a tradition that all barbarian chieftains, as well as other important officers of each tribe, had to take to ensure that the Earth Mother approved of them.

"What’s wrong?" Hagen smirked at the sight. "Why did you all become silent?"

"Leone is not a barbarian." Malik shook his head. "He doesn’t worship the Earth Mother."

"It doesn’t matter," Hagen answered. "This test will prove if he really doesn’t have any malicious thoughts towards us."

Malik couldn’t refute Hagen’s words. No one could. All barbarians had an unwavering belief that the trial would be fair and just. Only the Earth Mother could decide whether Leone was a threat to her children or not.

Everyone was still deep in thought when they heard someone yawn all of a sudden.

"Still talking?" Troy made a shooing motion with his hands. "I thought all of you were planning to leave. Why are you still here? Go away. I’m busy, and I don’t have time to have small talk with any of you."

The chieftains wanted to roll their eyes in response, but they simply turned around to leave instead.

Since their people were currently staying in Eden, Oswald, Duncan, and Garen would head there first.

According to Leone, the monster army had destroyed their camps before making their way to Grimjaw Mountain.

As such, the three chieftains decided to stay in Eden with their tribes until the Tribal Gathering ended.

After that, they would return and rebuild their tribes.

Of course, there was one more option. They could just go to Grimjaw Mountain and live with the Aslan Tribe instead.

In fact, they were seriously considering doing that once the Tribal Gathering ended. Since Kael could easily build a fortress, didn’t that mean he could easily build houses for them?

Leone even hinted to the three that he would be more than happy to have all of them stay with him. He even told them that there would be a surprise waiting for them if they visited Grimjaw Mountain after the Tribal Gathering.

When the tribes could no longer be seen in the distance, Troy finally glanced at Jafar.

"We have a lot of work to do, old friend," Troy said before shifting his attention toward the Dread Wyverns circling the city.

These Guardians had reluctantly accepted Troy as their new leader.

With that, the Darkmane Tribe now had thirteen Manticores and Dread Wyverns to act as protectors, making their tribe more formidable than ever.

A day ago, all of them had decided to execute Osteon in the city center.

Only his family grieved for him, of course. As for the rest of their tribe, they looked at their dead chieftain with complicated expressions on their faces.

They used to respect him. But after learning about what he had done, they felt that his death was justified.

Hagen tried to prevent the execution, but Troy would not hear him out.

Osteon’s crime was high treason, after all.

Although they had no King, what he did had endangered all the chieftains and the tribes of the Borderlands.

With that, death was the only way for him to pay for his crimes.

For now, a brief peace had settled in the Borderlands.

But for most, it was only the calm before another storm.

They could instinctively tell that something big was going to happen at the upcoming Tribal Gathering.

And the one who would be at the center of it all would not be Hagen, but the young chieftain of the Aslan Tribe.
