My Kingdom Building Done Right!

Chapter 383: A Stain On His Reputation

Leone stood on the ramparts of the fortress in the mountain, overlooking the magnificent view.

"It’s almost time," Leone muttered.

The journey to Eden for the Tribal Gathering would begin tomorrow.

His body double would replace him and travel with Kael, Ulric, and Jason, alongside Tianna, Elias, and the forces left behind to guard them.

As discussed, Vlad would stay behind, so he made sure to write a letter to Godwin, which Tianna would personally deliver.

In that letter, Leone apologized to Godwin for letting Vlad stay at Grimjaw Mountain during this difficult time.

He mentioned that he recognized Vlad’s brilliant mind in creating strategies and that he had temporarily hired him as the strategist of the Aslan Tribe for the upcoming defense against the Kingdom of Britannia.

Leone firmly stated in his letter that he would do his very best to ensure that no harm would come to Vlad during the defensive battle.

He asked for Godwin’s understanding, saying he was only doing this in order to ensure that they could protect the northern boundary of the Borderlands from the invasion of the Kingdom of Britannia.

Although it might sound silly that a fourteen-year-old boy would play the role of a strategist in the upcoming war, this was, in fact, the truth.

After all, Vlad’s ability after becoming Leone’s vassal was simply too precious not to put to good use.

It was also a good opportunity for the teenager to gain combat experience, allowing him to gain confidence in his own abilities.

Of course, Leone had no intention of placing all the responsibility on Vlad’s shoulders.

The teenager might possess an extraordinary strategizing ability, but he was still inexperienced when it came to actual warfare.

There was a vast difference between creating strategies from the safety of a room and commanding people whose lives depended on every decision made on the spot.

For the latter, one wrong judgment could cost dozens, perhaps even hundreds of lives.

Leone understood this better than anyone.

Still, he believed that Vlad would play an important role in the battles ahead.

Jason’s training was still in full swing.

For every day that passed, his character grew more and more reserved.

He no longer talked as much as before, only replying when talked to. His stance and aura also gained a sharp edge.

Everyone who knew him noticed the change in his personality.

Tianna was one of them. Every day, she would spare time to pull him back to a safe corner, making sure his heart would thaw, no matter how much or little.

His training would resume even as they made their way to Eden. Though, truth be told, Leone was a little worried about him.

’Trust your vassals, Leone,’ Daedalus said directly inside his head, as if it read his thoughts. ’Trust them as much as they trust you. Besides, a man becomes stronger when he has something he wants to protect.’

Leone nodded at that. ’I believe in him, Daedalus.’

’Actually, I’m more curious about the reinforcements the Helion Duchy will send our way,’ Daedalus stated.

’I’m curious as well.’ Leone smiled faintly. ’Though, I have a feeling that my great grandfather will not disappoint me.’

His great grandfather, Lugh, had supported his mother even after she left their family to marry into the Frontera Family.

In fact, Helen had nothing but praise for her grandfather. She even felt a little sad about the distance blocking him from visiting his great grandchildren more often.

Growing up, Leone had heard about his great-grandfather’s heroic tales. At some point, he even thought that his mother must be exaggerating. Lugh’s achievements were so massive that hearing them as a kid felt like listening to a fairy tale.

The great Hero of the Radiant Empire, as well as the Grand Duke of the Helion Duchy.

Such a title would bring awe to many people.

However, after meeting Lugh in the flesh and hearing the story about his... *ahem* adventures when he was young, Leone realized that his great grandfather was human just like everyone else.

It even made him appreciate Lugh more. While facts remained that he was a Hero in the Radiant Empire, there was a side of him that only the members of his family knew about.

Suddenly, he sensed Kael climbing up the ramparts.

The young man was certain that his vassal had come to report about the matters concerning the delegation selected for the Tribal Gathering.

"Great Chieftain, our preparations for tomorrow’s departure are complete," Kael said calmly.

"Good job, Kael," Leone replied.

"As much as I want to stay with you during the battle against the Kingdom of Britannia, I also understand that the battle we have to face in the Tribal Gathering is just as important," Kael said in a volume that only Leone could hear. "I promise that I will not let you down."

"Having you there puts my mind at ease, Kael," Leone replied. "We just need to do our part well. In fact, I think your role is going to be more dangerous than the one I am about to play."

There was a chance that his body double would be assassinated on the way to Eden, or perhaps after he arrived at Eden.

Though, based on Leone and Daedalus’ deductions, the chances of this happening were low.

Why?

Because those who wished him ill would not be that stupid.

During this troubled time, when the Borderlands was facing the threat of an invasion, the death of a chieftain would greatly lower the morale of the barbarians.

That being so, those who understood Leone’s importance had no choice but to retract their claws, at least until the present threat had been dealt with.

Of course, there was also the possibility that they would use this opportunity to get rid of a strong rival, especially while things were very chaotic.

After all, it was too easy to pin the crime of a chieftain’s death on the Aurelion Empire or the Kingdom of Britannia once they started to mobilize their forces in their entirety.

But truth be told, the real problems weren’t the chieftains.

Sure, Hagen might try to kill Leone since the young man was starting to become a threat.

However, the Elders of each tribe, who were also afraid of the young chieftain’s growth, could mobilize their own private forces to do the job themselves.

Frankly, as one of Leone’s most trusted vassals, Kael would also face danger.

Everyone believed that he possessed the power to "build" things due to his performance during the battle against the Monster King.

"Stick with the Darkmane Tribe at all times if possible," Leone advised. "I’m sure Troy will be the least of our worries."

"Understood, Great Chieftain." Kael nodded in agreement.

Although it was ironic, there was no tribe Leone trusted more right now other than the Darkmane Tribe.

The same tribe that they fought in a war of supremacy.

After all, Jafar and Travis had sworn loyalty to him.

As for Troy... Daedalus had placed a bomb in his heart. That being so, the moment he betrayed Leone, the grimoire would not hesitate to end the Lionkin’s life.

Aside from Troy, there was also the great shaman Gundar, Malik, as well as the three middle-ranked chieftains that were on their side.

At the very least, Leone had many allies he could count on in Eden.

"Great Chieftain, I have a little concern," Kael said softly. "Are you sure your body double will be fine?"

"Why do you ask?" Leone blinked in confusion.

"I went to check on it a while ago in the Hidden Valley, and well, forgive me for being blunt, but... it was acting too full of itself," Kael stated.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, it will be much easier to show it to you, so please watch carefully."

At those words, Kael stood straight and rested both hands on his waist. He then raised his chin arrogantly as if he thought everyone around him was beneath him.

Leone blinked. "...What are you doing?"

"Forgive me, Great Chieftain," Kael replied, feeling a little embarrassed. "I’m demonstrating what it did earlier, so please bear with me."

He then resumed his original pose before speaking arrogantly.

"I am the Great Chieftain of the Aslan Tribe!" Kael said, doing his best to imitate the mannerisms of Leone’s body double. "The future ruler of the Borderlands! All of you, bow before me!"

"..."

"...Huh?"

Daedalus was speechless, while Leone could only look at Kael in shock.

However, it didn’t end there.

Soon, Kael flipped his hair and said the most cringe-worthy lines that made Leone feel a sudden urge to murder his body double.

"To all the ladies admiring me right now, I know my overwhelming charm has made it difficult for all of you to sleep at night," Kael said in a voice that made Leone almost cough out blood.

"But worry not! I am a generous man. When I become the future ruler of the Borderlands, I shall graciously allow the most beautiful among you to become my bed warmers!"

Leone thought nothing could possibly be more cringey than those words. Yet, he was wrong.

Very wrong.

After all, Kael wasn’t done just yet.

"Do not despair!" Kael let out the most dramatic sigh before flipping his hair once more. "Even if the heavens blessed me with greatness beyond your comprehension, I shall still graciously allow all of you to serve beneath me!"

Kael was about to say more, but at that moment, Leone tugged at his arm, telling him to stop with trembling hands.

"Where is it?" Leone asked, his face flushed with anger and embarrassment. "I’m gonna kill it and burn it with fire."

"Hidden Valley," Kael answered without hesitation.

Leone hurried to look for his body double in order to give it a piece of his mind. Kael then followed behind his Great Chieftain, both amused and excited to see what was going to happen next.

While Leone could take control of his body double anytime and anywhere, he couldn’t always be in control since he would be busy facing off against the Britannian Army.

With that in mind, if his body double were to create a scene and make Leone look like a clown in front of everyone, wouldn’t his reputation take a massive hit?

It would be fine if it only happened in the Hidden Valley.

However, if it happened in Eden, where all the important figures in the Borderlands had gathered, it would create a stain on Leone’s reputation.

And he wouldn’t be able to wash it away even if he took a bath three times a day.
