My Kingdom Building Done Right!

Chapter 393: Qualifications To Become A Barbarian King

"You’ve really done it now, Leone," Gundar said with a sigh as he looked at the young man in front of him.

Leone blinked once, then twice, before tilting his head in confusion.

"I did what exactly, Great Uncle?" Leone asked.

He had just swapped places with his clone, only to find himself sitting face to face with the great shaman of the Borderlands.

"You seriously don’t know what you did?" Gundar asked back with amusement.

Daedalus, who had paid close attention to everything that happened, relayed all the important details to Leone.

The grimoire had been busy coordinating with the blacksmiths of the Aslan Tribe, so it didn’t immediately notice when Leone swapped with his clone.

When the young man heard what his clone declared, he immediately broke out into a cold sweat.

"A-Ahahaha..." Leone scratched his head in response. "I think I was just overwhelmed by my emotions after what happened at the gate, Great Uncle. I made that declaration out of spite."

"Whether you said that out of spite or some other reason, it’s already too late," Gundar stated. "Now that you have declared your intention to become the next Barbarian King, Hagen and Godwin will now treat you differently.

"Before your declaration, you hadn’t posed a threat to them. In their eyes, the Aslan Tribe can’t even leave Grimjaw Mountain. However, words are powerful, Leone. What you said has made them look at you in a different light. Since you have the ambition to become the Barbarian King, those two will treat you as a rival from now on."

"B-But I’m too young to become a Barbarian King," Leone reasoned. Deep inside, he wanted to have a proper talk with his clone, who seemed to have developed the hobby of causing trouble for him!

Gundar shook his head at those words. "Age is not a factor that determines whether someone can become the Barbarian King. Do you truly believe the warriors of the Borderlands would bow their heads to someone whose only outstanding merit is their age?

"No, Leone. Instead, they will bow to the one who proves that they have the strength to protect them, the wisdom to guide them, as well as the courage to lead when everyone else is afraid. You have shown this quality during the Monster King’s invasion."

Gundar lit the pipe he fished out of his pocket and started smoking. It helped him calm his nerves a bit. Although his face remained neutral, deep inside, he felt anxious for Leone after his bold declaration.

"Those who were present in the battle against the Monster King, those who survived that calamity, will acknowledge that you have the qualifications to become the next Barbarian King," Gundar said in a serious tone. "Hagen and Godwin have been aiming for that position for as long as I can remember. Of course, Troy is no different. He also wished to sit in that position of power, after all.

"Malik doesn’t really care who rules the Borderlands as long as they leave him and his tribe alone. As for the three chieftains of the middle-ranked tribes, Duncan, Oswald, and Garen, they know that this is the perfect moment to pick sides. And guess whose side they plan to go to?"

"Mine?" Leone blinked.

"Exactly. And that is the reason why Hagen, Godwin, and Troy will treat your declaration seriously. The Aslan Tribe’s sole weakness is population. If the three middle-ranked tribes become your vassals, what do you think will happen?"

Leone didn’t even need to think that extensively.

Everything clicked into place.

The high-ranking tribes hadn’t felt threatened by the Aslan Tribe in the past since their population was too low.

However, if the three middle-ranked tribes were to take this opportunity to come under his umbrella, then the weakness of the Aslan Tribe would be no more.

They would become a thorn in the eyes of the other Chieftains who were planning to settle all scores at this Tribal Gathering and unite all the tribes under one banner!

"I don’t need to tell you this, but Hagen will no longer hold back. He will do his best to get rid of you and make it look like an accident," Gundar stated.

"That’s not yet the worst-case scenario. What will you do if Godwin joins him in this undertaking? With two of the strongest high-ranking tribes working together, you might not leave Eden alive. You should have stayed in Grimjaw Mountain, Leone. Why did you have to come here?"

The great shaman sighed before continuing to smoke the pipe in his hand.

"Thank you for worrying about me, Great Uncle," Leone said. "I’m touched to know you care about me, so let me tell you a secret. Actually, the one you are talking to right now isn’t the real me. It’s my clone."

"...What?" Gundar looked back at Leone in disbelief. "A clone?"

"Yes." Leone nodded. "I can temporarily take over its consciousness, but most of the time, it moves and acts independently. With that said, its earlier declaration was an independent act. I only found out what happened after skimming through its memories."

Gundar stared long and hard at Leone for a few seconds before heaving a sigh.

This wasn’t a sigh of exasperation, but a sigh of relief.

"Good." Gundar nodded. "Now I feel a little better."

Leone smiled wryly and then told his Great Uncle about the information that he got from his mother.

When he heard that the Kingdom of Britannia would mobilize an army numbering in the fifty to seventy thousand range, his earlier relief vanished without a trace.

"Your clone earlier said that the Aslan Tribe will face off against the Britannian Army," Gundar said. "But can the Aslan Tribe really defeat them?"

"No." Leone shook his head. "According to my mother, they will also bring powerhouses among their ranks. The best we can do is delay their advance. I have already come up with a backup plan, but our goal is to prevent the Kingdom of Britannia from regrouping with the Aurelion Empire’s army.

"If those two armies unite, then Eden will not stand a chance. So, we will use guerrilla tactics and dirty schemes to make them retreat."

"Can you make them retreat?" Gundar arched an eyebrow. "Is that even possible?"

"Don’t worry, Great Uncle." Leone smiled faintly. "I have friends in high places. If things are done right, then we won’t need to worry about the Kingdom of Britannia for long."

Due to the firmness and confidence in the young man’s tone, Gundar was starting to believe that Leone truly had a plan to make the Britannian Army retreat.

And while he didn’t know what kind of plan the young man had in mind, the great shaman had known Leone for long enough to know that he wouldn’t lie about such an important matter.

"Understood." Gundar nodded. "I’ll believe you. But Leone, there’s one more thing that you need to do."

"What is it, Great Uncle?" Leone asked.

"The gate you broke." Gundar smirked. "Isn’t it about time that you fix it?"

"Of course, Great Uncle," Leone replied. "I will fix it by tomorrow."

"Tomorrow? Why not now?"

"Now is not the right time to fix it, Great Uncle."

While Leone could build things outside of his territory, they didn’t last long. It was very similar to Vlad’s paintings, which only manifested for a certain time limit.

At most, Leone’s creation could last up to half a day at the longest, or until he dispelled it on his own.

However, he didn’t want to create a temporary gate for Eden. Instead, he wanted to build a stronger and better gate that wouldn’t be easily destroyed by a single bombardment.

And to do that, he needed to do one thing and one thing only.

Plant his flag in Eden and turn it into his second territory.

Because of this, Kael had been wandering around the city in search of a house they could buy and convert into the Aslan Tribe’s embassy inside Eden.

Once Kael accomplished his mission, they could plant a flag without worries. No one would find it odd.

Why?

Because all the other tribes’ banners could be seen from their respective residences, marking the territories that belonged to their faction.

Unlike his clone, who was overflowing with confidence, Leone felt a little guilty.

This is because the city that the barbarians had protected for generation after generation would soon belong to him.

Once he planted his banner, the entire dungeon city would officially become his second territory.

By doing so, he could use his kingdom building powers to remodel Eden and turn it into a fortress that no ordinary army could breach.

A fortress that wouldn’t lose to the defenses of the Aslan Tribe back at Grimjaw Mountain.
