Chapter 264: Chapter 263: A Madman’s Diary
"That Mage was named Elias."
Village Chief Reed explained, "What you saw just now was his testing ground. This was where he lived before he died."
’As I expected,’ Zelir thought.
’It’s a mess in here, too.’
The layout of the room was not complex; one might even call it crude.
A reasonably large solid wood desk, two rickety chairs.
Tucked into a corner was an old bookshelf with only half a door, and against the wall was a single bed whose bedding was so faded, you couldn’t even tell what color it was.
For a Mage, these conditions could be considered quite impoverished.
The desk was covered with all sorts of drafts, ancient tomes, and parchment.
Even the chairs were piled high.
Zelir stepped forward and sifted through them.
The contents of most of the papers were similar to what he had seen before in Mage Hedley’s laboratory.
They were all strange records, or notes about which Spell Structure had gone wrong.
Mage Hedley picked up a copy of *Advanced Techniques Overview*, looking somewhat surprised.
"Well, well... So they actually buy and read books like this. I thought they were just winging it completely."
"Perhaps it’s precisely because they want to break the rules that they must first understand them," Zelir said as he wandered around the room.
He reached out and tentatively pulled open the main drawer in the center of the desk.
"Hm?"
As the drawer slid open, Zelir’s eyebrows rose slightly.
Inside the drawer lay a notebook. It looked quite exquisite, clearly preserved with care.
"What’s this?" Mage Hedley came over for a closer look.
Zelir opened it to the first page, his eyes darting between the lines, a hint of surprise on his face.
It was Elias’s diary.
...
[Sel Kingdom, Year 1163, Budding Moon, Day 5]
Damn it!
Those bureaucrats from the Silverpine City Mage’s Guild!
They’re nothing but a bunch of old zombies, clinging to their rotten dogma while waiting to die!
Yesterday, a Guild deacon actually barged into my residence with two members of the enforcement team and threw my luggage out.
And all because a Magic I experimented with accidentally inflicted Spirit pollution on four people?
To expel me over such a trivial matter... It’s an utter humiliation!
They have no idea what a leap of imagination is!
Fine. If Silverpine City has no room for a genius, then I’ll just leave.
Any town where those rigid academicians exist has the same suffocating, stale air.
I’ve decided to head north.
My experiments cannot stop, no matter what.
[Sel Kingdom, Year 1163, Budding Moon, Day 12]
It’s been a week since I left Silverpine City.
The weather is dreadful. It’s been raining nonstop.
My robes are soaked, and the rain has smeared half the ink.
The hard bed boards in those cheap inns are making my back ache.
I have to admit, physical suffering is harder to bear than the pursuit of lofty spiritual goals.
Last night at the tavern, I tried to start a fire to dry my clothes.
I ended up accidentally turning the owner’s table into semi-molten lava and scalding his pet cat to death.
I explained that it was art, but the barbarian still threw me out.
There are too many fools in this world. It’s hard to conduct my research without a sponsor.
I must find a more remote place, one that has more reverence for Power.
[Sel Kingdom, Year 1163, Flower Brilliance Month, Day 14]
My savings are running low.
Eating in the wild and sleeping under the stars is extremely detrimental to contemplation.
Yesterday, I was so focused on conceiving a Spell Structure that a Slime nearly jumped onto my face.
I need a stable residence, preferably far away from that nagging Mage’s Guild.
But not so far that I starve to death.
I’ve heard that Black Stone Town in the Northern Territory is a remote place, where the Guild’s control is weaker.
Perhaps that is where I should go.
[Sel Kingdom, Year 1163, Fiery Sun Month, Day 2]
My luck has turned!
The God of Destiny and Hope has finally smiled upon me.
I found this small village called Kenta Village on the southeastern outskirts of Black Stone Town.
The village chief here is an old man named Reed. He seems to have a great reverence for Power.
When I demonstrated a trivial Lighting Skill, they looked at me as if they were seeing a walking god.
We reached an agreement.
They’re letting me live in the house next to the mill and will even bring me food every day.
In exchange, I’ll occasionally help them drive away the beasts that ruin their crops.
The villagers here are ignorant and backward. They don’t even know the difference between Magic and parlor tricks.
But this is good. It means no one will disturb me, and no one will meddle in my research.
I have a new laboratory.
It’s crude, but that doesn’t matter. The brilliance of the ideas that will sparkle within it is what is truly great!
The truth that belongs to Elias alone will set sail from here!
...
From this point on, the diary entries were interspersed with many trivial records of daily expenses and preliminary experimental drafts.
Zelir turned another page and saw a yellowed letter abruptly tucked between the pages.
Zelir carefully unfolded the letter. The handwriting on it was frantic.
Sender: Waldo
My dearest Elias:
I hope this letter finds you well.
I hear you’ve settled down in the countryside?
Pay no mind to the Guild’s ostracism. It’s merely the jealousy of mediocrities for a genius.
I’m writing to tell you that I’ve made a thrilling breakthrough on the topic we’ve been discussing: "the ability to directly alter matter with one’s will"!
Altering matter with one’s will—what a magnificent idea!
Isn’t this the very template for the Great Creation Skill we have been so desperately seeking?
I’ve unexpectedly obtained a fragmented Spell Structure. Its effect is so miraculous that I cannot describe it in a letter.
However, I strongly recommend you give it a try!
The parchment inscribed with the Spell Structure has been sent along with this letter.
You only need to try it to know that I’m not exaggerating!
I have a feeling we will soon be knocking on the door of the Creator God himself!
Your closest teacher, Waldo.
This letter was like Pandora’s box, completely igniting Elias’s madness.
In the diary entries that followed, the handwriting grew increasingly messy and frenzied.
[Sel Kingdom, Year 1163, Harvest Moon, Day 2]
My God... Teacher Waldo is a madman.
But I might be even madder.
The Spell Structure Teacher Waldo mentioned... it’s simply unbelievable.
I tried dozens of times! I didn’t care if my Magic Power would run rampant; I just forced my will into it!
Just now! On the eighteenth attempt! It lit up!
Even if it was only for a moment.
At the time, there was only a glass ink bottle on the desk. The instant the Magic activated, my consciousness even grew hazy...
When I opened my eyes again, the bottle hadn’t shattered or exploded.
But the body of the bottle had taken on a soft, feather-like texture, and though the ink inside was still flowing, it made the sound of clinking glass!
Transposition! Distortion!
Even if it was only in a thumb-sized area, I did it!
This isn’t an Illusion Technique; this is a modification of reality itself!
This is insane! It’s absolutely incredible!
