Chapter 293: Chapter 285: Opening

"Aren’t you getting a little obsessive?"

Gray frowned, rubbing his sore wrist.

For the past two days, Zelir had been practically dragging him out to practice dancing. Gray hadn’t even been this fanatical when he was learning from his etiquette teacher.

Under the high-intensity practice, Zelir gradually progressed from his initial awkwardness to a comfortable proficiency.

At first, he still needed Gray to lead.

Now, however, Zelir was able to take the lead in their dance.

And Gray’s performance in the follower’s role had become all the more enchanting.

Night had long since fallen. On the training grounds, wind lanterns swayed, casting dappled light and shadows.

A bone-chilling wind swept across the sandy grounds, rustling as it snuck into their collars.

Gray plopped down on the sand, his blond hair damp with sweat and plastered messily to his forehead.

Zelir pulled his collar tight and sat down as well.

He and Gray looked up at the sky together.

The winter nights in the Northern Territory were cold, but they were also exceptionally clear.

With no clouds to obscure the view, the Milky Way stretched across the heavens.

Countless brilliant stars glittered like crushed diamonds on black velvet, blanketing the entire night sky.

Watching the lonely, cold moon, the white vapor of Zelir’s breath condensed and dissipated before his eyes.

"You know..."

Gray suddenly broke the silence. "You really care about Bev, don’t you?"

Zelir didn’t take his eyes off the starry sky, but a ripple of emotion stirred within them.

The image of Bev surfaced in his mind.

"How could I... not care?" Zelir said softly.

"Hmph... I knew there was a reason you were so obsessed with practicing... I could tell something was off between you two way back during the Monster Hunting."

Gray said knowingly.

"Then there was that special commission for the mine, and that time at her family’s manor when she even taught you how to ride a horse..."

"You’re one lucky guy, finding a girl like that..."

Gray mused. "Seriously, what stage are you two at?"

"We’re... not really at any stage, I guess?"

Zelir thought for a moment. "We just get along like normal friends."

"Have you held hands?"

"We have."

"What about... something more, like a kiss?"

"That hasn’t happened..." Zelir admitted frankly.

"Have you confessed?"

"No..."

"I give up. You’re such a blockhead."

Gray poked Zelir on the head. "Why are you so timid?"

"I’m just..."

Zelir trailed off, looking hesitant.

"It just feels a little too fast. I’m holding back."

’But even though we haven’t done any of those things...’

Zelir narrowed his eyes slightly.

’Bev and I still have so many wonderful memories.’

His mind drifted, replaying scenes of their time together.

’Back when I wasn’t famous, when I wasn’t even a Magic Apprentice, Bev was already kind to me.’

’She enthusiastically explained the fundamentals of Magic to me and helped me pick out a Magic Wand.’

’Then we went to gather herbs together and roasted a rabbit in the forest...’

’The genuine happiness she felt for me when I was promoted to Junior Mage.’

’A young lady from a powerful noble family might seem unattainable to others.’

’But in front of me, Bev never put on airs.’

’How could I not sense her affection?’

"What do you mean, ’holding back’? You need to grab an opportunity like this, don’t let it slip away."

Gray looked genuinely distressed.

"You’re obviously into each other, but you’re too shy to make a move... Then again, this ambiguous phase is pretty nice too. The whole playing-hard-to-get, push-and-pull thing."

"Still, you should be a little bolder... Besides, I don’t really get why you’re so obsessed with adventuring."

"You know, your intense drive is pretty much what’s dragging our whole team forward."

"Because..."

Zelir thought for a moment.

’That’s right. I don’t really need to be this driven.’

’I’m not short on money anymore, and there aren’t any urgent crises to deal with.’

’I could easily live a slow, leisurely life.’

’But...’

A spark of insight flashed through his mind.

’It’s that faint sense of crisis I’ve had since the day I first arrived in this world.’

’The Great Creation Skill.’

’Yes...’

Zelir couldn’t help but recall what he had once seen in a vision: ’Ending 1: The Immortal’s Curse.’

’Not ’Ending,’ but ’Ending 1.’’

’Thinking about that detail... it’s actually rather chilling.’

’If there’s an ’Ending 1,’ then there must be an ’Ending 2.’’

’The Immortal’s Curse is definitely a bad ending, so... what about the other ones?’

’This world is far from as peaceful as it seems on the surface.’

’And then there was the Evil God incident I encountered before... that world-destroying Evil God I saw in the vision...’

’It’s all inexplicably unnerving.’

’Even though you don’t run into such things in daily life...’

’I always have this feeling that those things are like venomous snakes lurking in the shadows.’

’You never know when one might strike... and the bite would be instantly fatal!’

A long silence passed.

In the end, Zelir said nothing, only shaking his head gently.

"I just can’t sit still."

"What’s this about not being able to sit still? Take my advice."

Gray patted Zelir’s shoulder, his tone uncharacteristically earnest.

"This ball is the perfect opportunity. Bev is a really wonderful girl. Don’t let her down."

"..."

...

「Night.」

Tonight, Black Stone Town seemed to have been jolted awake from its long, frozen slumber.

Although fine snowflakes still drifted from the sky and the temperature had dropped even lower, the deathly silent atmosphere that usually descended upon the town at nightfall was utterly shattered by a wave of restless energy.
