My Magic Has No Upper Limit

Chapter 295 - 286: What Should I Do Now?

Chapter 295: Chapter 286: What Should I Do Now?

"Good evening, Aurora."

Zelir stood on the final step of the staircase.

He pulled on his gloves as he spoke and gave a wave.

"Not home from work yet?"

"I... I’m going home right now."

Aurora answered, a bit flustered. She kept her head down, as if afraid Zelir would see her burning cheeks.

"Zelir... are you going to a ball?"

"I am."

Zelir nodded. "The Alberti Family’s winter ball."

’I’m so jealous...’

Aurora thought to herself.

’So that noble lady who came looking for Zelir several times really is the young miss of the Alberti Family.’

Just then, the inn’s main door was pushed open again, letting in a gust of cold night air.

"Whew... It’s much warmer in here."

Gray strode in. When he saw Zelir, he paused, slightly taken aback.

"Whoa, I have to say, I’m surprised..."

’This kid is even more handsome than I expected.’

Zelir glanced at Gray and couldn’t help but chuckle.

Gray was now wearing a wine-red formal suit, and his normally wild blond hair had been carefully styled.

His devil-may-care aura was still there, but thankfully, the clothes make the man.

Even with his swagger, he’d transformed from a common street thug into a cynical playboy.

"Alright, let’s go."

Gray beckoned. "It’s about time."

The carriage they had arranged for was already waiting outside.

...

「Alberti Manor.」

The atmosphere tonight was at its peak.

As they drew closer, Zelir could feel the fervent atmosphere through the carriage window, so thick it seemed to make the air boil.

It was the eve before the deep winter set in.

"My god... this is ridiculous," Gray said, glancing out the window.

The tree-lined avenue leading to the manor’s main gate was completely gridlocked with all sorts of carriages.

The carriage lamps formed a long, winding fire dragon, slithering slowly through the darkness.

Dozens of uniformed manor attendants, holding glowing batons, darted through the traffic, drenched in sweat.

They directed the irate coachmen and equally impatient nobility, trying to prevent the fragile line of traffic from collapsing completely.

Even more stunning was the area outside the manor grounds.

The Alberti Clan hadn’t confined the revelry within their high walls.

On the vast lawn outside the manor, countless bonfires had been lit. From temporary stalls, the aroma of fine wine and roasted meat drifted for miles on the cold wind.

It was a place specially prepared for those who hadn’t received an invitation, and for the commoners of Black Stone Town.

The townspeople gathered here. Though they couldn’t enter the main ballroom, they could still sing and dance to the merry sound of accordions.

Not only must the nobility have their fill of fun, but the common folk must also sing their praises.

"My lords... I’m terribly sorry, but the carriage can’t go any further up the road."

The coachman’s helpless voice came from the front. "It’s just too congested."

"Then we’ll walk," Zelir said, not minding the short distance.

After paying the fare, they wove through the crowded traffic and arrived at the gate of Alberti Manor.

The curtains of a gold-inlaid carriage by the roadside were pulled open a crack.

Now and then, a few whispers could be heard.

A noble lady, in the middle of touching up her makeup, stopped what she was doing, her eyes glued to Zelir as he walked past.

"Who is that young man with the black hair?"

"I’ve never heard of any noble family having a young master like that... He’s so handsome!"

"I can’t take it... I’m going to intercept him for the opening dance!"

"I like the handsome blond one next to him, too. He has that delicious bad-boy vibe!"

At the manor entrance, the five-meter-tall, double-wrought iron gates stood open.

However, attendants were still waiting to check the invitations of those entering.

Beside them, several guards in fine full-plate armor stood as still as statues.

With just a cursory glance, Zelir could tell they were at least Middle Level Professionals.

But on a festive day like this, their expressions weren’t as scrutinizing as usual.

They wouldn’t draw their weapons unless it was absolutely necessary.

"Good evening, gentlemen."

The attendant at the gate extended a hand politely.

"Welcome to Alberti Manor. Tonight is the winter ball. May I see your invitation?"

Zelir took out the exquisite invitation Bev had given him.

The attendant took it with both hands, inspected it, and gave a slight nod.

"Lord Zelir, please go in."

The attendant respectfully returned the invitation to Zelir.

His inquisitive gaze, however, shifted past Zelir and landed on Gray.

"And this gentleman’s invitation..."

"He’s my companion. We’re together, so he shouldn’t need one, right?" Zelir said.

"Ah?"

The attendant froze for a moment when he heard this.

"Oh, oh... I understand, I understand."

But he quickly recovered, hastily stepping aside to clear the way.

After entering the manor grounds, Zelir couldn’t help but glance back.

"That attendant’s expression... why was it so strange?"

"It’s nothing."

Gray sighed, one hand stuck in his waistcoat pocket.

"It just means there will probably be some strange rumors later on. Don’t worry about it."

Inside the manor grounds, the scene was completely different from the last time Zelir had visited.

The already luxurious setting had been taken to an entirely new level.

The paths were specially paved with white flagstones, and vibrant flowers were still blooming alongside them.

He had no idea how they managed it.

On either side of the winding path to the main keep, meticulously trimmed evergreen shrubs formed a series of private, resting alcoves.
