Night fell. The Xu Mansion’s ancestral hall stood grim and solemn under the moonlight.
Outside, Steward Disciples from the Martial Arts Academy stood guard, posted every few paces. Their backs were ramrod straight as their eyes vigilantly scanned the surroundings, the weapons in their hands glinting coldly in the faint light.
Just then, the sound of footsteps drew near. Draped in an outer robe, his face a shade pale, Liang Cheng slowly approached, accompanied by Li Mu.
"Senior Brother Liang!"
The two disciples at the door quickly bowed, their eyes filled with respect and a hint of nervousness.
The True Inheritor of the Martial Arts Academy before them had just survived an assassination attempt by a True Essence Realm expert and had personally orchestrated the Xu Family’s destruction. He was a truly ruthless individual.
"Thank you for your hard work."
Liang Cheng’s voice was calm, tinged with a hint of weakness. "You’ve all put in a great deal of effort guarding this place for the past few days without a moment’s rest. Though the Xu Family has been brought to justice, there’s no guarantee that petty vultures aren’t circling, hoping to pick at the scraps. You must remain vigilant."
"We’re merely doing our duty. It’s no hardship at all."
The two disciples quickly replied, not daring to take any credit. Even so, they felt a flicker of pleasure in their hearts.
’Who wouldn’t be happy to receive praise from a True Inheritor of the Martial Arts Academy?’
At that, Liang Cheng nodded and said to Li Mu beside him, "Li Mu, I’ve already spoken with the Master. We’re relieving the guard here at the Xu Mansion. Take all the junior brothers on duty to Yuelai Tower in the city for a proper meal. Put the bill on my tab. Everyone has been on edge these past few days. It’s time to unwind."
Li Mu caught on immediately and said to the two disciples with a smile, "Senior Brother Liang is treating everyone. Tonight at Yuelai Tower, there’ll be all the food and drink you want! Drop what you’re doing, go gather the other junior brothers, and let’s head out!"
Joy lit up their faces. They immediately turned to fetch the other Steward Disciples on guard duty at the Xu Mansion. A palpable sense of relief in their steps, they split up to gather the others posted around the estate.
Soon, only Liang Cheng and Li Mu remained. The look of weakness on Liang Cheng’s face vanished in an instant. He nodded at Li Mu, then turned and walked toward the Xu Family’s ancestral hall.
He did not rush inside. Instead, he slowly circled the exterior of the ancestral hall, his True Qi spreading out like invisible ripples to meticulously probe his surroundings.
He returned to the main entrance, pushed the door open just a crack, and slipped inside.
The air in the ancestral hall was filled with the faint, scorched smell of burnt incense and joss paper. Moonlight streamed through the high windows, casting mottled patterns of light and shadow on the floor and illuminating the densely packed rows of the Xu Family’s ancestral tablets.
Liang Cheng paid the tablets no mind, his gaze locking onto the spot beneath the offering table. The location Xu Feng had described was clearly visible.
He did not approach recklessly. Instead, he stepped back outside. The nine True Qi Seeds within his body began to slowly rotate, and a wisp of pure, condensed True Qi silently seeped from his fingertip, aimed from a distance at the edge of the third floor tile from the left.
Following the sequence Xu Feng had described—top-left, bottom-right, center, bottom-left, top-right—he remotely manipulated his True Qi to gently press each point in order.
CLICK.
The faint sound of a mechanism echoed from beneath the floor, startlingly clear in the silent ancestral hall.
At that very instant.
WHOOSH WHOOSH WHOOSH—!
Several streaks of dark, cold light erupted from beneath the offering table, from the bases of the pillars on either side, and from the shadows of the beams overhead.
The Crossbow Arrows were tipped with a lethal poison, and they shimmered with an eerie blue light. Their speed was astonishing, blanketing nearly every possible escape route in front of the offering table.
Immediately after, a thick, dark green poison mist with a pungent, sickly-sweet stench billowed out from the cracks around the floor tile beneath the table, rapidly filling the air.
’So Xu Feng really did hold something back.’
This trap was likely the Xu Family’s final failsafe. When Xu Feng had given his account, he had deliberately omitted this deadly part of it.
’That was Xu Feng, all right.’
Liang Cheng’s gaze was icy, but he was not particularly surprised.
It would have been stranger if a man like Xu Feng hadn’t held something back. Liang Cheng had long anticipated a potential complication.
Holding his breath, he activated his Broken Wave Technique. A burst of True Qi flared, forming a solid, pale blue barrier in front of him just in case.
At the same time, he flicked his left sleeve. A gentle but powerful Wind Force surged out, deftly creating a swirling vortex of air that gathered up the spreading poison mist and violently shoved it toward an open high window on the side of the hall.
FWOOSH—
The dark green poison mist was expertly funneled out the window, where it quickly dissipated into the night wind.
The air in the ancestral hall cleared, leaving only a faint, lingering, sickly-sweet stench and several black poison crossbow bolts on the floor.
Still, Liang Cheng didn’t enter.
He waited quietly for a moment, confirming that no further traps would be triggered. Only then did he take a small bamboo tube from his robes and pull out the stopper. A dusty gray mouse scurried out, squeaking, and he used a wisp of True Qi to gently guide it toward the hidden compartment.
The mouse scurried around in confused circles on the floor, sniffing the air. Finding nothing amiss, it quickly ran to the leg of the offering table to search for food scraps.
’It seemed the poison mist and the Crossbow Arrows were the final safeguards.’
Only then did Liang Cheng slowly step forward, crouch down, and peer into the open compartment.
Inside the compartment lay a blue-covered booklet wrapped in oilcloth.
Liang Cheng picked up the booklet and quickly flipped through it. The pages were filled with densely packed transaction records.
Dates, codenames, items, quantities, general destinations...
Most of the entries pointed toward the Fire Worship Sect. The majority of the resources had been transported through legitimate, compliant channels, but just as Xu Feng had said, there was no mention of Situ Lang or Wu Zhenshan by name.
However, the recurring codenames and locations, as well as the lists of materials that required special clearance to mobilize, formed a clear trail of clues.
If he followed this trail and apprehended one or two key individuals, he could likely force a breakthrough and find the conclusive evidence he needed.
He carefully put the booklet away, restored the hidden compartment, and reset the floor tile. After meticulously cleaning up the faint traces he had left behind, he collected the poison crossbow bolts and departed in silence.
