During his stay, the Ye Family treated Liang Cheng with great hospitality.
Tingtai Courtyard was a private, self-contained residence with small bridges arching over flowing streams. Every day, servants would bring him rare delicacies and spiritual foods, their attitude ever respectful and attentive.
On the morning of the third day, the Ye Family estate was festooned with lanterns and colorful banners as guests arrived in droves.
Nearly every prominent family in Bibo City had sent representatives, and many of the younger generation’s top talents were also in attendance.
The celebration was held in the Moon Embracing Garden, the largest garden on the Ye Family estate.
When Liang Cheng followed Ye Zhiqiu to their seats, several hundred people were already in the garden.
The main table was reserved for the Ye Family elders and the patriarchs of the various families, while the younger generation sat at tables on either side.
The moment the two of them appeared, they drew a great deal of attention.
"So that’s the Ye Family’s Third Young Master? He really has an extraordinary air about him."
"Who’s that young man in the green robe next to him? His face is completely unfamiliar."
"I think he’s a new disciple from the Main Courtyard named Liang Cheng. I heard he came from a Fisherman’s Family, has astonishing talent, and reached the True Essence Realm at twenty. His potential is immense."
Amidst the low murmurs, Liang Cheng remained perfectly composed, following Ye Zhiqiu to the head table on the left. Just as they were sitting down, a cold voice drifted over.
"Liang Cheng, you’re certainly taking your time with that secluded cultivation."
It was Xiao Qingxue, seated at the neighboring table. Dressed in robes as white as snow, she possessed a frosty temperament.
The Xiao Family was another major clan in Bibo City, and she had returned to witness the ceremony. She looked at Liang Cheng, her eyes blazing with a competitive fire.
"Your seclusion caused you to miss four months of the mid-month competitions."
Liang Cheng smiled faintly. "Junior Sister Xiao, the path of cultivation is a long one. There’s no hurry."
Just then, Ye Zhiqiu hurried to smooth things over. Xiao Qingxue held her tongue. Many of the younger disciples got up to offer toasts, and Ye Zhiqiu socialized with each of them in turn.
Liang Cheng sat to one side, silently observing the attendees. ’The disciples from Bibo City’s great clans really do have deep foundations...’
There were quite a few at the True Qi Realm under the age of twenty, and even over ten who had reached the True Essence Realm.
’It seems that having an ancestor who achieved Breaking Mortality really does grant an advantage to the bloodline...’
As Liang Cheng was mulling this over, a sudden sneer came from a table diagonally across from him:
"Born in a fishing village, and after a few lucky breaks, he really thinks he can stand on equal footing with the likes of us? How laughable."
The voice wasn’t loud, yet it carried clearly to Liang Cheng’s ears.
The surrounding tables immediately grew a little quieter.
Liang Cheng looked up to see a richly dressed young man with an arrogant face. When the youth saw Liang Cheng looking, he didn’t back down in the slightest. Instead, he lifted his chin in a defiant gesture.
Ye Zhiqiu’s expression darkened.
"Yang the Fourth, I know you’re friends with Li Feng, but today is the celebration for my breakthrough to the True Gang Realm. This isn’t the place for you to cause trouble."
Upon hearing this, Yang Chen quickly offered a bow. "Brother Ye, please calm down. I was merely saying that some people should understand basic etiquette. He comes to Bibo City and doesn’t even know to offer a toast."
Before Ye Zhiqiu could react, Liang Cheng spoke calmly, "If you have something to say, just say it."
Yang Chen sneered. "Say what? That you don’t deserve to be sitting here? A country boy who really thinks he’s someone important? I wonder if Master Chen was having a moment of delusion."
"How dare you!"
Ye Zhiqiu slammed his hand on the table and shot to his feet.
He moved quickly, but someone else was quicker.
With a flicker of movement, Liang Cheng was gone. The crowd saw only a blur, and in the next instant, he had appeared in front of Yang Chen’s table.
So fast!
Yang Chen’s face drained of color in horror. He instinctively tried to retreat, only to find he was completely unable to move!
"You dare insult my master?"
Before the words had even left his lips, Liang Cheng thrust his palm downward. A burst of True Essence shot toward Yang Chen’s head, and the expressions of the onlookers changed dramatically.
’Is this Liang Cheng actually trying to kill him!?’
At that exact moment, Old Master Ye—shedding all traces of his former senile demeanor—simply pointed from afar. A strange energy abruptly dragged Yang Chen more than thirty feet away.
CRACK!
Liang Cheng’s True Essence missed its mark, and the entire table, which was crafted from Profound Iron Wood, instantly collapsed into a pile of fine powder.
Yang Chen collapsed onto the ground, his face ashen.
The entire garden fell silent.
Everyone stared at Liang Cheng, their eyes filled with utter shock. That table had been made from hundred-year-old Profound Iron Wood, yet he had obliterated it with a single palm strike!
His control over True Essence had reached a state of perfection!
"That’s enough."
From the main table, Old Master Ye spoke slowly. "Today is Zhiqiu’s celebration. It is not a place for you to air your grievances."
He looked at Yang Chen. "You. Get out. Now."
Yang Chen opened his mouth to protest but ultimately didn’t dare to disobey. He prepared to slink away in disgrace.
But Liang Cheng spoke again. "Yang Chen insulted my master. If I don’t receive a proper explanation for this, then I will personally go to the Yang Family estate and challenge every disciple at the True Essence Realm. Whether they live or die will depend on their own skill!"
What!?
At this, Ye Zhiqiu also stepped forward. "If that’s the case, then I, too, shall issue a challenge. I wish to ’spar’ with all my peers of the Yang Family who are at the True Gang Realm—a duel to the death!"
"Absurd!"
Even Old Master Ye hadn’t anticipated this situation. He turned to look at the Yang Family Patriarch, whose expression was grim.
’Idiot!’
"I will immediately send this little bastard home to be confined for three years. After that, he will go to the Main Courtyard and personally apologize to Master Chen. Esteemed disciples of the Main Courtyard, what say we let the matter rest here?"
The Yang Family Patriarch had deliberately referred to them as ’esteemed disciples of the Main Courtyard’ instead of a more familiar term, a clear show of respect.
Ye Zhiqiu glanced at Liang Cheng. After they made eye contact, Ye Zhiqiu gave a slight nod. The Yang Family Patriarch then excused himself and had his retainers drag Yang Chen away.
And with that, the storm was quelled.
But the atmosphere at the banquet had irrevocably changed.
As everyone looked at Liang Cheng, not a single trace of disdain remained in their eyes.
In a righteous fury for his master’s honor, the young man had shown his fangs!
Ye Zhiqiu clapped Liang Cheng on the shoulder and said in a low voice, "Junior Brother, thank you."
He knew that Liang Cheng’s actions had not only served to establish his own dominance and defend Chen Xuanfeng’s honor, but also to save face for him as the host.
Liang Cheng shook his head. "How could I let some insignificant whelp run wild at my Senior Brother’s celebration?"
The banquet continued for another hour before finally concluding, with guests and host alike parting on pleasant terms.
In the aftermath, Liang Cheng’s name spread rapidly throughout Bibo City.
...
「That night, the moon was bright and the stars were few.」
Liang Cheng was seated in meditation within Tingtai Courtyard, regulating his breathing. Suddenly, he sensed a presence and opened his eyes.
Outside the courtyard gate, a figure in white stood silently in the darkness. It was Xiao Qingxue.
"Junior Sister Xiao?"
Liang Cheng stood up.
"Senior Brother Liang, ever since I lost to you at the mid-month competition, I have wanted to fight you again. But you were in seclusion for months, so I never got the chance."
Xiao Qingxue strode into the courtyard, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword and her gaze intense. "No time like the present. Let’s have a match."
Liang Cheng was momentarily stunned. ’Her personality is the complete opposite of her cold, aloof aura. She’s a complete martial arts fanatic.’
"This is a guest courtyard in the Ye Family estate. It would be... inconvenient," Liang Cheng said.
Before he had even finished speaking, Xiao Qingxue’s eyes narrowed and she drew her sword!
Xiao Qingxue’s sword was shockingly fast. Like a meteor in the cold night, it shot straight for Liang Cheng’s throat, sealing off any path of retreat.
Seeing this, Liang Cheng advanced rather than retreated. He formed a sword-hand with his right fingers and, in a deceptively swift motion that started later but arrived first, flicked the side of her blade.
TING!
With a clear ring, the longsword was knocked aside.
Xiao Qingxue twisted her wrist, and the light from her blade transformed into seven cold stars, targeting the major acupoints on Liang Cheng’s torso. Liang Cheng’s body swayed like a swimming dragon, weaving seven times within a sliver of space to evade every strike while simultaneously forming a blade with his left hand.
Wind and Thunder Slash!
This strike forced Xiao Qingxue to pull her sword back defensively. Her eyes narrowed as the aura around her body surged, her Sword Intent growing several times more potent as she thrust her blade forward again.
Liang Cheng took a half-step forward on his right foot and, using his fingers as a blade, tapped the side of the incoming sword tip with pinpoint accuracy.
"CLANG—!"
With a sharp ring, Xiao Qingxue stumbled back three steps, the longsword in her hand buzzing ceaselessly.
Liang Cheng relaxed his stance and offered a cupped-fist salute. "Miss Xiao’s Swordsmanship is superb. I was fortunate to win."
"I lost today."
Xiao Qingxue sheathed her sword. "At next month’s competition in the Main Courtyard, we will fight again."
With that, she turned and left, her movements crisp and decisive.
As Liang Cheng watched her retreating back, he suddenly found her gaze—so utterly devoted to the Martial Dao—to be somewhat familiar.
It was just like Yun Jinghong’s.
Only, she was a woman.
Just then, the sound of applause broke the silence.
Ye Zhiqiu stepped out from behind a pillar, shaking his head with a smile. "That young lady of the Xiao Family really is a martial arts fanatic. And you, my dear junior brother, are as clueless about women as your blade is straight."
Liang Cheng’s face remained impassive. Seeing his lack of reaction, Ye Zhiqiu gave an awkward laugh. "Alright, alright, let’s get down to business. As for what happened today, there’s no need for thanks between us martial brothers.
"Now that my grandfather’s ’task’ is complete, how about we check out some of the good stuff Bibo City has to offer? Things you won’t find in Yunhai City. I’ll take you tomorrow, what do you say?"
"Alright."
