Zhou Xinghe did not answer directly. He looked outside the hall and ordered, "Bring it in."
Two guards entered, carrying a body covered with a white sheet. When the sheet was pulled away, it revealed the corpse of a half-human, half-fish monster with a mouth full of sharp teeth. Its scales shimmered with a dark blue luster.
"A Sea Yasha, a Tier Three Fierce Beast."
Zhou Xinghe said slowly, "This was discovered on the East Coast this morning. It has already killed over thirty fishermen."
He stood up, walked to the window, and gazed out at the pitch-black sea.
"Half an hour ago, the West Pier also sent an urgent report. Several Tier Two Fierce Beasts—sawtooth fish—charged the pier’s defenses. Although they were repelled, they injured seventeen guards in the process."
Zhou Xinghe turned around, his gaze sweeping over everyone in the hall. "In just half an hour, there have been three Fierce Beast attacks. The beasts’ tiers range from Two to Four, and their locations seem random."
He paused, then said emphatically, "This is very likely not an accident."
Ye Zhiqiu shot to his feet and exclaimed, "A Sea Beast Tide?!"
At these three words, the faces of all the young scions from the great families in the hall turned deathly pale.
A Sea Beast Tide.
It was a catastrophe that occurred when the Barrier over the High Seas passage fluctuated periodically, causing deep-sea Fierce Beasts to be driven by some mysterious force into a large-scale assault on coastal towns.
The last time Bibo City encountered a Beast Tide was thirty years ago. That time, the city’s defenses were breached, and there were over ten thousand casualties.
"It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s highly likely."
Zhou Xinghe’s voice was grave. "The City Lord has already sent an urgent message to the Alliance and notified the Main Courtyard. At the same time, he has ordered the entire city to be placed under martial law. All Sea Ships are to suspend operations and be commandeered by the City Lord’s Mansion for transporting supplies and reinforcing the defensive lines."
He looked at Ye Zhiqiu. "Third Young Master Ye, the Ye Family’s fleet will also be requisitioned."
Ye Zhiqiu took a deep breath. "The Ye Family will not shrink from its duty."
"Good."
Zhou Xinghe nodded, then looked at the other young scions. "All of you, please return to your families at once. Inform your Patriarchs of this matter and assist in setting up the city’s defenses."
The young scions all rose and hurried away, their previously relaxed demeanor completely gone.
...
On the way back to the Ye Family estate, Ye Zhiqiu’s expression was grim.
"A Sea Beast Tide... why now?" he murmured. "The Barrier’s fluctuation cycle shouldn’t be for at least another five years."
Liang Cheng didn’t know much about the Sea Beast Tide, but from everyone’s reactions, he could tell the matter was incredibly serious.
After returning to the Ye Family estate, Ye Zhiqiu hurried off to see Old Master Ye.
Liang Cheng was about to return to Tingtai Courtyard when Ye Zhiqiu called out to him. He took the Black Shark Demon Core from his robes and pressed it into Liang Cheng’s hand.
"Junior Brother, take this Demon Core. If a Sea Beast Tide really breaks out, Bibo City will likely be in chaos for a while. First thing tomorrow morning, I’ll arrange for someone to escort you back to the Main Courtyard. The sooner, the better."
Liang Cheng took the Demon Core. It felt heavy in his hand and radiated a dense Water Attribute Spiritual Energy.
He nodded. "I’ll follow your arrangements, Senior Brother. Take care."
...
The next morning, however, just as Liang Cheng finished packing his belongings, Ye Zhiqiu pushed the door open and entered, his expression even grimmer than the day before.
Behind him, Old Master Ye walked in slowly, leaning on a cane, his aged face etched with solemnity.
"Young Master Liang, you won’t be able to leave."
Old Master Ye said in a heavy voice, "From Midnight last night until this morning, there have been a total of sixteen Fierce Beast attacks along the coast. The highest tier among them has already reached Tier Four Peak."
"A Steward from the Four Islands Alliance has confirmed it. There are abnormal fluctuations in the High Seas passage Barrier. A Sea Beast Tide is now inevitable."
At this, he looked at Liang Cheng, his expression solemn.
"At dawn today, the City Lord’s Mansion issued an order to seal all sea exits and requisition all ships and Martial Artists in the city to assist with the defense. The sea route to Yunhai City has been cut off, and all passenger vessels have been commandeered."
Liang Cheng frowned at this.
Ye Zhiqiu gave a bitter smile. "It’s not just the sea routes. The land routes to neighboring cities are impassable too. During a Beast Tide, Fierce Beasts run rampant outside the city, so the City Lord’s Mansion has also sealed the land routes. They’ve also advised all visiting Martial Artists to remain in the city for now and help with the defense."
Old Master Ye looked at Liang Cheng, his tone apologetic. "Young Master Liang, this situation was sudden, and I did not foresee it. I can only impose upon you to stay with the Ye Family for the time being. Once the Beast Tide subsides, the Ye Family will personally escort you back to the Main Courtyard."
Liang Cheng was silent for a moment before cupping his fists and saying, "Old Master Ye, you are too kind. Since I find myself here during this crisis, it is only right that I cooperate. I was just wondering, how long does a Beast Tide usually last?"
"As short as half a month, as long as several months."
Old Master Ye sighed. "However, Young Master, you need not worry too much. Bibo City has its City Defense Array, its walls are sturdy, and we have a Steward from the Alliance overseeing things. As long as no Fierce Beasts of Tier Six or higher appear, the city’s defenses should hold without issue."
He spoke casually, but Liang Cheng could hear the attempt at reassurance in his voice.
’If the Sea Beast Tide is as terrifying as the rumors say, how could a simple assurance that the defenses ’should hold without issue’ possibly be enough?’
After Ye Zhiqiu saw Old Master Ye out, he turned back and said to Liang Cheng in a low voice, "Don’t believe everything my grandfather said. Once a Beast Tide breaks out, the Fierce Beasts number in the tens of thousands, and there will surely be a High Tier Fierce Beast commanding them."
"During the tide thirty years ago, a Tier Six Fierce Beast, a Deep Sea Demon Octopus, appeared. It nearly killed the City Lord and broke through the East City Wall."
He then patted Liang Cheng’s shoulder. "But don’t worry. The Ye Family’s foundation is here. We will do everything in our power to ensure your safety."
"For the next few days, just rest easy in Tingtai Courtyard and try not to go out. The city will probably descend into chaos soon."
Liang Cheng nodded but then suddenly asked, "The High Seas Barrier... how exactly was it breached?"
Ye Zhiqiu was taken aback for a moment, then shook his head. "I don’t understand it either. The Barrier is directly controlled by the Penglai Sect; ordinary people have no access to it. But historically, when the Barrier acts abnormally, there are only two possibilities: either the natural fluctuation cycle has started early, or someone has tampered with it."
However, anyone capable of tampering with it would have to be a Great Power who has surpassed the Breaking Mortality realm.
As Ye Zhiqiu spoke this last sentence, he lowered his voice to a bare whisper, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
Liang Cheng didn’t press the matter.
After Ye Zhiqiu left, Liang Cheng walked into the courtyard and gazed toward the distant horizon where the sea met the sky.
Bibo City was nestled between the mountains and the sea, its walls towering high. He could already see figures scurrying atop the city walls, and the City Defense Barrier flickered, visible one moment and gone the next.
