"Bone Spike Arrowfish, Tier Two Fierce Beasts!"
Ye Zhiqiu roared, "Crossbow Carriages, ready! Fire!"
VMMM!
The ten Crossbow Carriages on the wall segment shuddered in unison. Truth-Breaking Crossbow Arrows, as thick as a man’s arm, ripped through the air and shot straight into the fog!
SPLAT! SPLAT!
Blooms of blood erupted as seven or eight Bone Spike Arrowfish were pierced straight through by the crossbow arrows, shrieking as they fell back into the sea.
But more dark shapes were already following close behind!
"There are too many!"
A True Qi Realm Martial Artist in the squad turned pale. As far as he could see, at least several dozen Bone Spike Arrowfish were charging at them from all different angles.
"Hold the formation and defend!"
Ye Zhiqiu drew his sword. "Zhao Tie, Wang Meng, advance with your shields! Crossbowmen, provide suppressive fire!"
Everyone moved in an instant.
Two True Qi Realm Martial Artists wielding heavy shields stepped forward, their shields slamming to the ground to protect the gap in the battlements. Behind them, three crossbowmen drew their bows taut, loosing a continuous stream of arrows.
The other teams followed their lead, striking at the same time.
Liang Cheng didn’t move.
He was the roamer designated by Ye Zhiqiu, responsible for plugging gaps and handling unexpected threats.
An Arrowfish broke through the rain of arrows and shot straight for the left side of the Shield Array!
Just as the shield-bearer, Zhao Tie, was about to adjust, another Arrowfish attacked from a blind spot on the right!
At that exact moment, Liang Cheng moved.
His figure was like a dragon’s tail flicking; in two steps, he was on the right side. His Zhenxian Saber remained sheathed. He formed a sword with the fingers of his left hand, and a blast of Profound Yin Sword Qi shot through the air!
THWACK!
The Sword Qi precisely pierced the Arrowfish’s right eye and exited through the back of its head.
The Arrowfish’s corpse fell.
The one on the left was sent flying by Zhao Tie’s shield.
"Nice!"
Zhao Tie grunted in approval.
Liang Cheng retreated to his original position, his gaze already scanning for the next threat.
The battle instantly reached a fever pitch.
The Bone Spike Arrowfish swarmed the city walls like raindrops. Everyone in the squad performed their duties—shields blocked, arrows flew, and swords and sabers finished off the stragglers.
But the sheer number of Arrowfish was overwhelming, and the sounds of slaughter filled the air.
Ye Zhiqiu moved like a wandering dragon. Wherever his blade’s light passed, several Arrowfish were guaranteed to be sliced in two.
The power of the True Gang Realm was on full display. He alone held a thirty-foot-wide section in the center of the wall.
But the pressure was still mounting.
"Captain! We’re almost out of crossbow arrows!"
A Transformation Force Martial Artist operating a Crossbow Carriage yelled.
"Conserve them! Wait for the big ones!"
Ye Zhiqiu shouted back.
His words had barely faded when a dull, drum-like impact sound came from the fog.
THUD!
The city wall trembled slightly.
"What was that?!"
Someone cried out in horror.
The thick fog roiled, and the silhouette of a behemoth slowly emerged.
It was a giant turtle, dark blue all over, with a thick shell on its back. The shell was over twenty feet in diameter, its four limbs were like pillars, and its head sported a pair of small, scarlet eyes.
It was using its iron-hard head to repeatedly ram the base of the city wall!
"A Tier Three Peak Fierce Beast, the Siege Turtle!"
Ye Zhiqiu’s expression remained unchanged. "Crossbow Carriages, concentrate fire on its head!"
VMMM! VMMM!
All the remaining crossbow arrows were fired, but they simply ricocheted off the turtle’s shell, leaving only faint white marks.
The Siege Turtle had its head retracted into its shell and was completely unaffected.
THUD! THUD!
The impacts grew heavier, and stones began to crumble and fall from the wall.
"At this rate, the wall’s foundation will collapse!"
Ye Zhiqiu prepared to act. "I’m going down to deal with it!"
"Captain, don’t! The situation underwater is unknown..."
A Martial Artist quickly tried to stop him, but before he could finish, Liang Cheng suddenly spoke up. "I’ll go."
Ye Zhiqiu looked at him.
Liang Cheng stared at the giant turtle below. "After each impact, its head is exposed for half a breath. Also, the second plate of armor on its left foreleg is slightly lighter in color. That must be its Reverse Scale. If we attack its head and that spot simultaneously, we should be able to kill it."
Ye Zhiqiu’s eyes lit up. As a True Gang expert, he needed to hold the rear and couldn’t act rashly.
"Alright! Be careful. I’ll provide cover from the Rear Sweep Array!"
Liang Cheng nodded and then leaped off the city wall!
"Young Hero Liang!"
The people on the wall cried out in alarm.
As Liang Cheng fell, he executed Wandering Dragon Step to maneuver like a serpent in water. The Zhenxian Saber flew from its sheath as he poured the True Essence of his Wind and Thunder Slash into the blade, its edge gleaming with violet-blue lightning. On his left arm, his Sleeve Sword lay in wait for the opportune moment.
The Siege Turtle seemed to sense the threat. Its ramming motion paused, and its head lifted slightly—
’Now!’
[Wind and Thunder Slash·Shocking Thunder]
[Profound Yin Sword Technique·Erosion Element]
Liang Cheng swung his saber. The slash, like a bolt of cyan lightning, precisely struck the lighter-colored plate on the turtle’s left foreleg. Almost simultaneously, a sinister and unpredictable Sword Rainbow shot from his right hand, stabbing straight for the turtle’s right eye!
CLANG!
SQUELCH!
The two muffled sounds exploded almost at the same time!
Liang Cheng’s saber strike had directly split open the lighter-colored plate, the blade sinking half a foot into its flesh as green blood gushed out!
The Sword Aura grazed the turtle’s eye, leaving a deep, bloody gash on its head!
"ROAR—!!"
The Siege Turtle let out a pained shriek. Pressing his advantage, Liang Cheng followed with strike after strike, a flurry of saber and sword qi, until the Siege Turtle’s body suddenly went rigid and fell backward, kicking up a massive splash.
Liang Cheng used the momentum to leap back onto the wall.
"Little Junior Brother, that was beautifully done."
Ye Zhiqiu praised him loudly.
"Young Hero Liang is mighty!"
The defenders on the wall breathed a sigh of relief and couldn’t help but cheer in unison.
’We’re not going to die!’
***
The battle lasted for a full hour.
The second and third waves of Fierce Beasts attacked one after another.
In addition to the Bone Spike Arrowfish and Siege Turtles, there were now Netted Jellyfish that could spit sticky webs, Tier Three Ironclaw Crabs with shells as hard as iron, and even a few Tier Four Sawtooth Sharks circling in the distance, waiting for a chance to strike.
Ye Zhiqiu’s squad began to suffer casualties.
A Transformation Force Martial Artist was ensnared by a Netted Jellyfish’s web and dragged off the wall. Although Ye Zhiqiu cut the web in time to save him, he had already fallen unconscious.
Two True Qi Realm Martial Artists were injured by Ironclaw Crabs, suffering broken arms.
Liang Cheng and Ye Zhiqiu became the pillars of their wall segment’s defense.
Ye Zhiqiu used his True Gang Realm Cultivation to dominate and kill the Tier Four Fierce Beasts, while Liang Cheng roamed the line, delivering finishing blows and targeting the beasts’ weak spots. As long as it wasn’t an overwhelmingly powerful beast, Liang Cheng mainly used his Mountain-Breaking Saber, treating the battle as training to improve his progress.
The two of them developed an increasing rapport, managing to hold their section of the wall against all odds.
When the fourth wave of Fierce Beasts retreated, the sky was already turning a fish-belly white. The dense fog had thinned slightly, revealing countless Fierce Beast corpses floating on the sea, which was now stained dark red.
Ye Zhiqiu had already finished collecting the Demon Cores. He and the other Martial Artists collapsed onto the city wall, gasping for breath as the reek of blood filled the air.
Ye Zhiqiu then took a headcount: out of a team of thirty, two were seriously injured, and six were lightly injured. Every single one of them was bloodied.
"Carry them down for treatment."
His voice was hoarse.
Liang Cheng leaned against a battlement, his Zhenxian Saber stuck in the ground beside him, its blade caked with viscous beast blood.
An Ironclaw Crab had grazed his right arm, but fortunately, his Mixed Element Gang Body had reached Minor Success, so it was only a superficial wound.
"How are you feeling?" Ye Zhiqiu walked over and handed him a waterskin.
Liang Cheng took it and drank a mouthful. "I’m fine."
Ye Zhiqiu shook his head and said no more.
He looked out at the other sections of the wall.
The situation in other defensive sectors was even worse.
Some wall segments had been breached by Fierce Beasts, their battlements crumbled, and the casualties were heavy.
The faint sounds of crying and groaning could be heard.
"This is only the first night." Ye Zhiqiu’s voice was low. "A Beast Tide usually lasts for several days, or even several months. Each wave is stronger than the last."
Liang Cheng was silent for a moment, then suddenly said, "Those Fierce Beasts... their attacks are layered."
Ye Zhiqiu was taken aback. "What do you mean?"
"The Bone Spike Arrowfish probed, the Siege Turtles broke the walls, the Netted Jellyfish provided control, and the Ironclaw Crabs handled close combat," Liang Cheng said slowly. "It’s like something is directing them."
Hearing this, Ye Zhiqiu’s expression changed.
Fierce Beasts in a Beast Tide are driven by instinct. Although they might cooperate with each other, they would never display such clear tactical layers.
Unless... there was a High-Tier Fierce Beast directing them from behind the scenes.
’A Tier Five?’
’Or even a Tier Six?’
"I’ll report this." Ye Zhiqiu stood up. "Get some rest for now. The guard changes in two hours."
He left in a hurry.
Liang Cheng sat alone on the wall, closed his eyes, and circulated his Cultivation Technique to recover.
***
At noon, the replacement Martial Artists arrived.
Liang Cheng withdrew from the wall with Ye Zhiqiu’s squad and returned to the temporary rest area set up inside the city.
The rest area was located in a warehouse district in the west of the city, a sprawling area of simple sheds.
The seriously wounded were sent to the medical tents, while the lightly injured tended to their own wounds.
The City Lord’s Mansion distributed basic Healing Elixirs and food, but the supplies were limited.
"We risk our lives, and this is all we get?"
A Martial Artist grumbled.
"Be grateful. I hear the price of Elixirs is going to rise again soon."
Just as Liang Cheng collected his share of the supplies and was about to head back to the residence arranged by the Ye Family, a figure suddenly appeared before him.
It was Yang Xian.
Three Martial Artists from the Yang Family, all with formidable auras, followed behind him.
"Liang Cheng, not a bad performance last night."
Yang Xian said with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
Liang Cheng looked at him without a word.
Yang Xian took a step closer and lowered his voice. "Defending the city is a war of attrition. Be careful. We’re all comrades-in-arms here; I wouldn’t want anything... unexpected to happen to you."
With that, he turned and left with his men.
Liang Cheng watched Yang Xian’s back, a flicker of doubt in his eyes. Just then, Ye Zhiqiu finished his handover, submitted all the Demon Cores, and joined him.
"Come on, let’s head home for now."
