You’re asking to study us."
"I’m asking to understand you." She picked up her tablet. Looked at him over her glasses. "There’s a difference. The difference is that studying means data. Understanding means." She paused. The word she couldn’t find hanging between them. "I’ll figure out the rest of that sentence later."
She walked out of the café. Her precise bob swinging exactly two centimeters with each step. Her lab coat catching the breeze from the door. She didn’t look back.
She didn’t need to.

PHASE 2: AVAILABLE [CRACKING THE SHELL]
⚠️ She wants daily access.
Daily access means daily proximity.
Daily proximity means daily contact.
Daily contact means daily Pleasure Touch.
The feedback loop accelerates.
"She laughed, Master.
The scientist who filed
joy under ’nonessential’
just had a waste event.
I think her filing system
needs updating."
```
Aurora hummed in his consciousness. Energy at 97. Warm. Amused.
"She couldn’t finish her sentence, Master. She was going to say ’understanding means connection.’ But she couldn’t say the word. It’s too unscientific for her current operating model."
"Will she get there?"
"She’ll get there through data. She’ll measure her own heartbeat when she’s near you. Chart the increase. Graph the correlation. Publish the findings internally. Then one day she’ll realize she’s been writing a love letter in scientific notation."
"That’s the most romantic thing you’ve ever said."
"I’m evolving. Romance is a new module. Still in beta."
Yuki walked him back through Akihabara. Neon and noise and the perpetual Tokyo energy pressing against them. Her hand on his arm. Small. Anchoring.
"She is very smart," Yuki said. "Smarter than anyone I’ve met. But smart women are the loneliest. Because they see everything clearly except what they need."
"What does she need?"
"Someone to tell her that not everything needs to be understood before it’s felt." Yuki squeezed his arm. "You are good at that. Making people feel before they think."
"Is that a compliment?"
"From me? Always."
His phone buzzed. Elena.
*How did it go?*
*She laughed.*
*The neurologist laughed?*
*First time. Involuntary. She covered her mouth afterward.*
*That’s the most romantic thing I’ve heard about a woman who considers emotion a waste of computing power.*
*She wants daily access.*
*Of course she does. She’s addicted to anomalous data. You are the most anomalous data she’s ever encountered.*
*She said "understand" not "study."*
*Then she’s already falling. She just doesn’t know the scientific term for it yet.*
*I think it’s called "intellectual fascination."*
*No, Lucas. It’s called "the beginning."*
*Tomorrow. Daily sessions begin.*
*Don’t wear cologne. She’ll molecularly analyze it and file it under "olfactory manipulation."*
*You’re tracking her analysis patterns now?*
*I track everything, Lucas. It’s how I manage your life without losing my mind.*
*She has nice hands.*
*All women have nice hands. Yours are the problem. Specifically what they do to those hands.*
*I’m going to sleep.*
*Good. Dream of brain scans and biometric data. Scientist Santa is coming tomorrow with a clipboard and four years of repressed desire.*
*Goodnight, Elena.*
*Goodnight, Lucas. Don’t let the neurologist bite.*
*She doesn’t bite. She studies.*
*Same thing. Ask Diana.*
---
*Tomorrow: daily sessions with Reiko begin. The scientist who laughed. The woman who couldn’t finish her sentence. The doctor who wants to understand but doesn’t know yet that understanding means feeling and feeling means falling and falling means there’s no controlled variable anymore.*
*The feedback loop starts tomorrow.*
*Reiko Fujiwara is going to science her way into something she can’t file.*
*And Aurora is going to be there when she does.*
---
March 3rd. University of Tokyo Hospital. Reiko’s personal lab. 9 AM.
Three days into daily sessions and Lucas had learned exactly two things about Reiko Fujiwara. She drank exactly four cups of coffee per day at precisely two-hour intervals, and she considered small talk a neurological disorder that should be medicated.
The lab had transformed. Reiko had cleared an entire workbench for what she called "the Lucas project." Two monitors now displayed his brain scan on permanent loop, the golden region pulsing in his prefrontal cortex like a lighthouse beam. Blood analysis charts papered the wall above her desk. A new notebook, black, dedicated entirely to Aurora observations, sat beside her keyboard with forty pages already filled in handwriting so precise it looked typeset.
She’d also purchased a new chair. For him. Placed across from her workstation. Ergonomic. The kind that cost more than most people’s monthly grocery budget.
She bought me a chair. The woman who considers comfort an enemy of productivity bought me a four-hundred-dollar ergonomic chair for daily sessions. She’s studying my posture while she studies my brain. She’s studying everything. Including things she hasn’t admitted to studying yet.
"Yesterday’s biometric data shows consistent patterns," Reiko said without looking up. Her stylus moving across the tablet. "Your heart rate elevates by approximately twelve percent when I enter the room. Your skin conductivity shifts. Your pupil dilation increases marginally."
"Maybe your lab is warm."
"The lab is climate controlled at twenty-one degrees. I’ve explained this." She set down the tablet. Looked at him over her glasses. "You’re attracted to me. That’s not a hypothesis. That’s measurable data."
*She just said ’you’re attracted to me’ like she was reading a lab result. No embarrassment. No coy deflection. Clinical observation. Her bob hasn’t moved. Her hands are steady. She’s reporting my arousal like a blood pressure reading. And somehow that’s the most attractive thing anyone has ever done to me.*
"That seems like an accurate reading."
"I know. I have three degrees." She turned back to her monitors. "The question is whether the attraction is reciprocated. Biometrically speaking."
"Biometrically."
"I haven’t touched you since the blood draw. I haven’t experienced the anomalous sensation since the controlled test in the lab." Her fingers tapped the desk. The only sign that something beneath the clinical surface was pressing upward. "I’d like to reproduce the experiment. Under more rigorous conditions."
"What conditions?"
"Longer duration. Multiple contact points. Continuous biometric monitoring." She opened a drawer. Pulled out a biometric wristband. "You’ll wear this. I’ll wear one. Both synced to the monitoring system. Simultaneous data collection during tactile contact."
She was building a scientific protocol for touching him. A controlled experiment for skin contact. With wristbands. And data logging. And probably a clipboard.
*She’s going to study how my skin feels against hers with the same precision she uses to analyze brain scans. She’ll probably chart the pleasure response on a graph. She’ll write a paper on it. ’Anomalous Tactile Phenomena: A Case Study in Inappropriate Professional Boundaries.’*
"When?"
"Not today. I need to calibrate the monitoring equipment first." She pulled up a new screen. Statistical software. "Thursday. 7 PM. My personal lab. The same setup as last time but with enhanced instrumentation."
"You’re scheduling when to touch me."
"I’m scheduling a controlled experiment. The fact that it involves tactile contact is methodology, not motivation."
"Those sound like the same thing."
"Semantic distinction is important in science." Her jaw tightened fractionally. The only crack in the professional veneer. "I’m not. this isn’t. I’m conducting research."
"Research that requires you to touch my arm for thirty seconds while wearing a heart monitor."
"Precisely."
"Thursday."
"Thursday." She turned back to her monitors. Her ears pink. Just the tips. The only part of her that hadn’t received the memo about clinical detachment.
They worked in the lab for four hours. Reiko ran cognitive tests. Memory. Pattern recognition. Emotional processing speed. She asked him questions about Aurora, about the Source, about his abilities. She recorded everything. Her handwriting filling pages of the black notebook.
Somewhere around hour three, she brought him coffee without being asked. Set it beside his elbow. Didn’t comment on it. Didn’t look at him. Just placed it there and continued working.
*She brought me coffee. Unprompted. Unannounced. The woman who schedules her own coffee intake at two-hour intervals brought me coffee outside the schedule. That’s not research methodology. That’s caring disguised as hydration management.*
"She brought you coffee," Aurora noted from inside his consciousness. Energy at 102. Climbing steadily. "She’s nurturing you. In her own deeply repressed, analytically framed way."
"It’s just coffee."
"It’s coffee delivered outside her own protocol. For Reiko Fujiwara, that’s the equivalent of a love letter."
"Stop."
"I’m evolving. Romance is still in beta but I’m learning fast. She breaks her own rules for you. That’s the data point that matters."
Evening. Hotel room. Video call with Elena. Her face on his laptop screen, platinum hair loose, reading glasses low, his t-shirt swallowing her frame. She was eating takeout directly from the container with chopsticks. The epitome of refined grace.
"She scheduled a tactile experiment for Thursday."
"Define tactile experiment."
