Just as Su Jun finished speaking, the recruiter spoke up.
"Bro, are you messing with me?" the recruiter asked, giving Su Jun a sidelong glance.
"Why would I mess with you? I’m here to apply for the job. So? My qualifications should be good enough, right?" Su Jun said with a smile.
"Are you trying to make a fool out of me, or did you forget to wear your glasses today? Didn’t you see the requirements? Key universities, top-tier domestic universities, or internationally renowned universities. You, with a degree from some diploma mill, what trouble are you trying to cause here? Get lost and go cool off somewhere!" the recruiter said, exasperated.
"Damn it, what do you people mean? You said you were hiring for this major, and now you’re looking down on my education? What damn use is a degree anyway? Isn’t being capable enough?" Su Jun said furiously.
He was so infuriated by the recruiter’s words that he almost lost it right then and there.
But despite his anger, he just grumbled and walked away after saying his piece.
If he kept arguing, it wouldn’t be long before a crowd gathered, and then he’d be socially dead for real.
"Can’t even handle a little blow like that?" Chu Feng said with a smile from the side.
"That guy was clearly doing it on purpose. Damn it, if we were anywhere else, I’d have beaten him up," Su Jun said, his face flushed with anger. It was obvious he’d taken a serious hit to his pride.
"You brought that humiliation on yourself. The recruitment sign clearly stated they wanted graduates from key universities and top-tier schools. You still insisted on submitting your resume, so who can you blame for being insulted?" Chu Feng said.
After that, Su Jun, still refusing to give up, continued to hand out his resume.
But, just as Chu Feng and Su Miaoke had predicted, not a single company was willing to take him.
It was a good outcome if they even spent a full minute looking at his resume. Most of them rejected him after a single glance, or they’d just ask what school he went to and reject him as soon as they heard the name.
The entire morning passed, and he didn’t have a single success.
Su Jun was so angry he felt like killing himself. It made him completely shut down.
"It’s noon. Do you want to keep looking or get something to eat first?" Chu Feng asked.
"Sigh, let’s eat first. Let’s go to the Beihai Restaurant next door. The food there is decent," Su Jun said.
"No need. Aren’t there food vendors right over there by the entrance?" Chu Feng said, pointing to the vendors outside the job fair.
"No, Brother-in-law, please don’t. Is the food from a place like this even edible? I wouldn’t eat it even if you gave it to me for free," Su Jun said with a look of disgust.
"Are you eating it or not? If not, you can go over there yourself. If you have money, go ahead. If you don’t, you’re eating this with me," Chu Feng said.
When Su Jun heard this, his face fell.
Because right now, he was penniless. His money had been confiscated long ago, and his cards were all frozen.
"This... Brother-in-law, aren’t you going too far? Is that stuff even edible? Won’t I get diarrhea and die after eating it?" Su Jun said, looking aggrieved.
Hearing this, Su Miaoke immediately scolded Su Jun, "You’ve been pampered your whole life and have never known hardship. It’s time you experienced some. Listen to your brother-in-law. Eat that. If you don’t, you don’t eat at all!"
Su Jun was helpless. He had no choice but to obey.
"Just this once! If you make me eat this again next time, I’d rather die!" Su Jun said, on the verge of tears.
The three of them arrived in front of a small fast-food stall.
"Boss, I’ll have a plate of stir-fried pork over rice," Chu Feng said.
"What are you having?" Chu Feng asked Su Jun.
Su Jun glanced at the eatery’s surroundings, a look of disgust on his face. His brow had been furrowed ever since he walked in.
"Whatever. I’ll have the same as you, Brother-in-law," Su Jun said, reluctantly taking a seat.
"I’ll have one too," Su Miaoke said.
"Alright, three orders of stir-fried pork over rice," the owner said, jotting down the order before heading into the kitchen.
The three of them sat down.
"This stir-fried pork is a bit spicy. Are you sure you can handle it?" Chu Feng asked with a smile.
"Sigh, it doesn’t matter if I can handle it or not. What choice do I have?" Su Jun said, looking completely dead inside.
He was currently daydreaming about a grand feast, but with no money, it was just a fantasy.
"What’s the plan for this afternoon? Keep looking here, or head over to the industrial park to ask around?" Chu Feng asked.
"Not here this afternoon. The people here have their noses in the air. I’m not going to stay here and take this abuse. Let’s go check out the industrial park. I refuse to believe I can’t find a job," Su Jun said, complaining and indignant.
"This is nothing. If you want to survive in the real world, how are you going to make it if you can’t even take a little frustration? Do you think everyone is born with the same privileges as you? So many people have it worse," Chu Feng said.
"No matter what, those bastards shouldn’t look down on people," Su Jun said resentfully.
"Sometimes, a person just has to bow to reality," Chu Feng said.
"Bow to reality my ass! Why should I bow my head? Who the hell do they think they are?" Su Jun raged. He couldn’t care less about any of that.
’Trying to change the worldview of a rich kid who’s been pampered for over twenty years with just a few words? That’s going to be very, very difficult.’
Su Jun couldn’t possibly understand right now how many people had to swallow their pride and endure all sorts of humiliation just for a job, for three meals a day, for their families.
But, that was life. Everyone’s fate was different; some had it good, some had it bad.
Chu Feng said to Su Jun, "Do you know where I was when I first started working?"
Su Jun shook his head. "I don’t."
"Back then, I was a laborer at a construction site. After graduation, I went there to earn money for my younger brother’s tuition. There was an older man on that site, a really good guy. He was very kind to me."
"He worked from eight in the morning until eleven at night every day. Aside from meal breaks, he almost never rested. He sent his entire monthly salary home, keeping only about a hundred yuan for himself. He didn’t even own a good pair of socks, and all his clothes were full of holes."
"Sometimes, when there was no food at the site and everyone went out to eat, he would just buy a few steamed buns for himself. With such high-intensity work, not eating any meat left him with no energy. I asked him back then why he didn’t buy some meat to eat."
"Do you know what he said?"
After listening, Su Jun shook his head.
"He said he wanted to save more money for his son. His son was in college, had a girlfriend, and spent a lot of money every month. Every time the latest ’Fruit’ phone came out, he had to buy the new one. Every month, he’d buy all sorts of new clothes and take his girlfriend out to eat, drink, and have fun. On top of that, his wife was seriously ill and could only be cared for by his elderly mother back home."
"He had no choice but to work desperately, to work himself to the bone. He ate less and worked more, all so he could give his son a little more living money."
