An airliner soared above the ocean, streaking across the sky. It left a long contrail between the stacked layers of clouds, like the persistent wake left by a turning submarine. The surface of the sea was an opaque mirror, half reflecting and half devouring the heavens. The waters, too, seemed to yearn for the ever-changing clouds, so that the fish might swim among them.
They could enjoy the morning light at dawn and hide from the scorching sun in the afternoon. Then, as evening fell and the sun began to set, the fish could bathe in the fleeting colors of the crimson afterglow, their bodies weaving together before vanishing back into the sky.
Chen Yuan stood on the deck of a cruise ship, leaning against the cold, hard railing. He drew his gaze down from above, wondering if clouds were the language of the sky, a language that only those with a special understanding could read.
He pondered this for a moment, then rested his chin in his hand and gazed out at the rippling sea. The azure water glittered under the sunlight like countless shining gems. The sheer vastness and clarity of the scene soothed his weary heart.
The cruise ship glided slowly forward toward its distant destination, carrying a lonely soul across a lonely sea. A few dolphins swam alongside the hull, riding the current to save energy. They seemed to race one another, now leaping from the water, now chasing each other playfully, their smooth backs reflecting a captivating sheen in the sunlight.
White-capped waves lapped against the hull, the sound crisp and rhythmic, like a beautiful piece of music playing just for him.
The wind that brushed against his face was salty and damp. Chen Yuan’s profound gaze drifted farther into the distance. He felt a bit disoriented, wondering just how far away his destination was…
’Huh? Wait a minute…’
’Where exactly was I going?’
’How did I suddenly end up at sea?’
’Where the hell is this, anyway?’
Chen Yuan’s expression stiffened. He stood there stunned for a moment, but nothing came to mind. He glanced around in a panic, finally letting out a curse under his breath.
He couldn’t remember how he’d ended up at sea, what ship he was on, where he was, or where he was going. He paced back and forth on the deck, scanning his surroundings, before coming to a desperate conclusion—wherever he was, it definitely wasn’t in his home country’s waters.
There was nothing but water in every direction, a vast expanse with no land in sight.
Then, Chen Yuan suddenly noticed there was no one else on deck. The realization sent a fresh wave of terror through him.
He was all alone.
“Honey~”
“Honey!”
Just as he was reeling in a daze, two incredibly gentle voices reached his ears. They were filled with joy and reliance, and they sounded achingly familiar. Chen Yuan spun around. The sight that met his eyes made him freeze on the spot.
Before him stood two young women in white wedding dresses, complete with veils. They had bright smiles on their identical, exquisite faces; one was playful and cute, the other gentle and poised. They hurried toward Chen Yuan with small steps, their gowns swaying gracefully as they moved. In unison, they threw themselves into his embrace, wrapping their arms around his neck with expressions of pure satisfaction.
Their perfect white teeth shone in the sunlight, and they were smiling so wide their eyelashes trembled.
“Honey, why did you run off here all by yourself? We couldn’t find you anywhere. You’re terrible,” one of them said in a voice so sweet it gave him goosebumps. She nuzzled against Chen Yuan’s arm, playfully tapping his chest with her small fists.
“Honey, let’s watch the sunset together later. It’ll be so romantic. I want to lean against you,” the other said. Her voice seemed to have a soothing quality; with just a few simple words, she managed to calm his frantic heart, if only a little.
Chen Yuan strained his eyes, trying to get a clearer look at their faces, but it was as if he were looking through a hazy mist. He had to rub his eyes several times before their features finally came into focus. When they did, Chen Yuan jumped in shock, because the two women he had his arms around were none other than Jiangg Ning and Jiangg Yao!
“Holy shit!” he cried out.
“What’s wrong, Honey?”
“Why are you two both calling me Honey? Where are we? What are we doing here? And why are you dressed so strangely? Are those wedding dresses? Wait… Why can’t I remember anything?! This is an Illusion Technique! It has to be an Illusion Technique!” Chen Yuan pinched his own thigh, trying to snap himself out of it, but it had no effect.
“Of course we are, Honey. My sister and I are married to you now. What else would we call you?”
“That’s right, we’re your wives now. We’re on our honeymoon. Here, look at that island up ahead. We’re about to reach the Mozambique Channel, and Madagascar isn’t much farther south! We’re going to find some penguins to get Q Coins, that way we can buy lots more expensive clothes,” Jiangg Yao said with a delightfully silly smile, her words making his head spin even more.
“What…? Q Coins? The Channel? And we’re going to Madagascar? Isn’t that place crawling with pirates?! Stop the ship!” Chen Yuan shouted in a panic.
’Wait a minute. Shouldn’t I be more concerned about the fact that I apparently married two women?’
’No, that’s not it!’
’How in the world did I end up marrying both Jiangg Ning and Jiangg Yao?! What the actual fuck!!!’
Chen Yuan finally realized where he’d gone wrong. He opened his mouth to ask again, but Jiangg Ning and Jiangg Yao exchanged a glance before gently covering his mouth with their hands. They soothed,
“Honey, it looks like you were just too happy last night. You had a few too many drinks, and now you’re so dizzy you can’t remember a thing. We’re on our honeymoon. We agreed yesterday that we’d put on our wedding dresses at sunset to take photos together, but you haven’t even changed yet. Why don’t you go rest for a little while? And by the way, there aren’t any pirates in Madagascar. You’re thinking of the Caribbean Sea.”
“So go on and get changed now. We’ll wait for you here.”
