"Sis, I'm leaving."
The three short words appeared on her phone's chat screen.
In a spare moment while adjusting the placement of stand-up signs in the conference hall, Jiangg Ning pulled out her phone for a look. She lowered her head in a brief, silent pause, then typed out a reply.
"Okay, be safe on the road. Message me when you get there."
Afterward, Jiangg Ning put her phone away, took a deep breath, and threw herself back into the on-site hustle.
...
Linzhou Puxi Road International Conference Hall.
The streets were so clogged with luxury cars they were almost completely full, leaving only a narrow, single lane for traffic. License plates from all over the northern region were gathered in one place. Passersby, unaware of what was happening, stared in astonishment at the extraordinary scene.
In fact, the parking garage and the first-floor interior were already out of space, which was why so many people had simply parked their cars along both sides of the road.
This was the appointment ceremony for the Jiang Corporation's General Director of Northern Region Energy Management, as well as the biggest personnel change in the region in seven years. Every person attending was a figure of consequence, including a host of business magnates and government officials. Within the Jiang Corporation, any director at the county level or above was invited to be here.
Inside the hotel's thousand-person conference hall, every single seat had a label corresponding to a job title. The seating was arranged from the administrative ranks at the edges inward; each step closer to the podium at the front represented a clear-cut and significant gap in rank.
This was a veritable Asura's field, where hierarchy was absolute. The lowest-ranking people present were directors who had clawed their way up for over a decade. Almost every single one of them was synonymous with power and influence in their local area—beings completely beyond the reach of ordinary people.
As the host, the Jiang Corporation's Northern Region Energy Management Division was currently in a frenzy in the main hall. They had been at the venue since seven this morning without a moment's rest.
As the new General Director's personal secretary, Jiangg Ning was responsible for overseeing and coordinating today's preparatory workflow.
She had arrived first thing in the morning.
The appointment process was extremely formal, with every part of the schedule planned to seamless perfection. An air of solemnity pervaded the entire event. There were no reporters, only internal personnel whose backgrounds were known at a glance, so there could be no room for negligence. The international hotel had also announced a three-day closure to the public, its staff ready to be deployed at a moment's notice.
To put it one way, even a single lightbulb in a room would turn on and off today with split-second precision according to the schedule.
The conference was scheduled to begin with a speech by Gao Dengfeng, who would elaborate on the northern region's situation and achievements over the past year in a brief report. Then, the relevant personnel appointed by the headquarters would take the stage.
Four special distinguished representatives from within the region would speak on behalf of the grassroots, presenting their requests and hopes for the future.
The midpoint of the conference would be the main event—the handover between the old and new directors, where Chen Yuan would be formally appointed as the General Director of the Northern Region.
Everyone came here to attend the conference with different feelings.
Some hoped to join the new director's camp, desperate to change their unbearable circumstances, seize opportunities, and accomplish something great. Some remained on the sidelines, uncertain of what kind of person the new director was; in the current complex situation, picking the wrong side could mean forfeiting their chances for future promotion. And some were simply harboring ulterior motives, wanting to see what the new director was made of and whether he would pose a threat to their current status.
"It's almost 1:30, Secretary Jiangg. Should I notify everyone to enter now?" a short-haired woman asked amidst the bustle of the conference hall.
"You may. Notify everyone to enter in an orderly fashion and find their seats. The conference will begin as scheduled. Maintain discipline after they come in."
"Is the General Director ready?"
"I'll go check."
Hearing this, the woman nodded.
Jiangg Ning set aside her other tasks and walked quickly in her high heels from the side door of the hall to the elevator. She rode it up to a room on the seventh floor. Inside, several women were helping Chen Yuan choose his clothes. They were professional stylists hired for the occasion, and by the door, a sharp and capable assistant stood supervising.
"This one is a bit too severe. It would be fine on President Jiang, but it makes you look a bit old. Let's switch it out."
"That's good enough, Yu. I'm getting tired of all this changing."
"Absolutely not. You need to be aware that you're the public face of the Jiang Corporation now. People will be taking photos that will be used for company publicity on all sorts of occasions."
"Fine, fine. Let's try one more then."
The moment Jiangg Ning walked in, she heard the conversation between Chen Yuan and Secretary Yu.
Secretary Yu was representing the headquarters' board of directors at this conference. Her status was not low; even Jiangg Ning had to show her respect and address her as a senior.
She walked in, and the two acknowledged her with a nod.
"I've notified everyone to enter. Is the General Director done changing?"
"Almost. Jiangg, you can help take a look too and see if this suit is suitable," Secretary Yu called out.
"Alright."
Jiangg Ning then entered, and Chen Yuan, who was standing still and letting the women fuss over him, came into her view.
For a split second, she was in a daze.
The immature Chen Yuan of the past was gone. The bangs that used to cover his forehead were now combed back, revealing clean-cut eyebrows and eyes. The styled-up hair was held in place with gel. A tie was knotted over his white dress shirt, and the form-fitting suit was draped over him like a suit of armor. A belt was cinched tightly around his lean waist.
Chen Yuan's eyes were still closed, and he looked slightly impatient.
When he heard the familiar voice, he finally opened them.
Their eyes met.
A moment later.
"So? Do I look good?" Chen Yuan asked, looking at Ningning.
"Mm... not bad. You look very distinguished," Jiangg Ning nodded, praising him sincerely.
"This one it is, then."
Chen Yuan waved his hand, signaling the bustling women to stop, and went to the side to pick up the speech he would be giving for his appointment.
Then he added, "Since everyone's here, I'll go to the side hall first to meet a few of the northern region's leaders, as well as my eager subordinates. Weren't they quite lively in the work group chat yesterday? Let's see if they're still so energetic in person."
"Okay, then you two go down together. I'll take the publicity department to get some photos first," Secretary Yu said, then turned as if she had just remembered something. "Oh, right. Jiangg, button his jacket for him. A secretary needs to be more perceptive."
"Oh... I understand."
Jiangg Ning lowered her head slightly, her eyes flickering as she walked over to stand in front of Chen Yuan.
She reached out and began to fasten the buttons, starting from the very bottom.
In the room, everyone else was busy with their own tasks, bustling back and forth. Secretary Yu led her people out, the sound of their footsteps growing more and more distant.
Amidst the noise, there were just the two of them—Chen Yuan and Jiangg Ning. One was fastening the buttons, while the other watched her meticulous movements.
Neither of them spoke.
