He hadn’t noticed the separation. The absolute chaos of the engagement—the blinding smoke, the roar of thermal fire, the screams of the dying—had swallowed his spatial awareness until he found himself isolated in the eastern district, his final physical arrow nocked tightly against Moonlight’s string. The civilian evacuation was complete. The villagers were away. But Nathan was boxed in.

A Corrupted Rock Hound emerged from the thick black smoke like a geological nightmare. It was the size of a small carriage, its rocky hide deeply fractured and weeping viscous dark fluid. Malformed extra limbs sprouted from its shoulders and flanks, twitching with the Court’s sick mutation magic. Its eyes burned with a radioactive violet malice, and its jaws slavered a corrosive acid that sizzled violently as it hit the cobblestones.

Nathan raised Moonlight. He drew the string back to his anchor point. He fired his last arrow. THWANK.

The steel broadhead struck the Hound’s cranium and shattered, bouncing off the mutated stone without leaving a scratch.

He was out of mana. Out of ammunition. Out of options.

The Hound lunged.

Nathan’s body reacted on pure, ingrained instinct—throwing himself into a desperate sideways dive. He felt the sheer kinetic wind of the creature’s massive jaws tear at his cloak, but his muscles were too flooded with lactic acid. He was too slow. Too drained. He hit the unforgiving cobblestones hard, the impact knocking the wind from his lungs and sending Moonlight clattering across the dirt. The Hound pivoted with unnatural speed, its multiple limbs tearing up the earth, its jaws unhinging for the execution.

’MASTER!’ Mirko’s scream ripped through the mental link, raw and agonizing. She was fighting on the opposite side of the square—too far, too exhausted to close the gap. ’I can’t—I’m too far—’

’Summoner!’ Kuro’s projection fractured with unmasked, visceral desperation. She was tearing through the shadows, but the firelight was too bright here, the shadows too thin. She was too slow.

’YOUNG LORD!’ Shiro’s golden fire flared through the link, but her [Dragon King’s Ascension] sputtered and died before it could launch her across the distance.

Nathan stared up into the cavernous, acidic maw of the descending Hound. Time dilated, stretching the moment into an eternity. He thought of Lucy, asleep in the capital. Of his summons, who had trusted him. Of his party, who had followed him into hell.

I’m sorry, he thought, the resignation heavy in his chest. I’m sorry I couldn’t...

A pillar of concentrated solar fire descended from the sky.

The Corrupted Rock Hound didn’t even have the breath to scream. One microsecond it was lunging for Nathan’s throat. The next, it was simply eradicated—violently vaporized by a blinding blast of thermal fury that left a glassed, smoking crater in the floor.

FWOOOOOOSH-KABOOM!

Nathan stared, utterly uncomprehending, as a figure dropped from the sky, landing beside him with the heavy, ungraceful THUD of someone who relied entirely on density rather than finesse.

Heavily scarred, corded arms. Burning red eyes. A thick leather forge apron strapped over a tactical combat tunic. A Molten Sprite orbiting her shoulders with fierce, aggressive territoriality, its body blazing with the exact same golden solar fire that had just saved his life.

"Vex?!"

"You look like hammered shit, Cross." The Grandmaster of Smithing planted her calloused hands on her hips, sweeping her red gaze over the burning village with the hyper-critical eye of a veteran who was thoroughly unimpressed by the apocalypse. Ember chirped aggressively, still radiating the residual heat of the orbital strike that had deleted the Hound. "Lucky I tracked your beacon. I’ve been following your party’s wake since Thornfield. You aren’t exactly subtle—leaving a trail of dead Court operatives and rescued zip codes across the entire eastern sector."

Nathan forced himself to his knees, his entire skeletal structure screaming in protest. "What the hell are you doing out here?"

"Finished." Vex reached into the heavy, fireproof forge-bag slung across her broad back. "Figured you’d need the upgrades sooner rather than later. Especially since you seem highly committed to getting yourself butchered before I can make the delivery."

She pulled out a sword.

It was breathtaking—an instrument designed strictly for absolute violence, forged for war. The blade was heavy, straight, and unyielding, forged directly from the Mythic scale of Vorlagrath. Its razor edge flickered with the purified, kinetic wyrm-fire Vex had burned from the corrupted hearts. The hilt was wrapped in heat-resistant drake leather, dark grey threaded with heavy crimson stitching. The pommel was a dense sphere of polished obsidian, and suspended within its core, a tiny, glowing fragment of the dragon’s scale pulsed like a living heartbeat.

Dragon’s Fang.

"Mirko’s new hardware," Vex grunted, offering the hilt. "Heavy broadsword. Kinetic flame edge that ignites on command. Structurally designed to channel her Knight arts—[Aegis Strike] will hit with double the concussive force through this alloy. The dragon-scale core dictates it will never dull, never shatter, and never stop burning as long as she holds the grip. Tell her to show it some respect."

Nathan took the weapon. The blade hummed violently in his grip, hot and terrifyingly alive. "Vex, I—"

"I’m not finished." She reached back into the bag and withdrew a pair of daggers. They were impossibly sleek, swallowing the ambient light. The blades gleamed with the faint, static hum of the Imoogi Scale’s paralytic venom. The hilts were perfectly counter-weighted, wrapped in pitch-black leather, anchored by small obsidian pommels that seemed to exude a localized aura of absolute stillness.

Silence and Stillness.

"Kuro’s new edge. The Imoogi Scale’s paralytic neurotoxin is permanently integrated into the alloy. Anything she slices with these will suffer severe motor-function degradation, even if she doesn’t hit a fatal artery. Shadow-forged steel base, same as her old set, but these actually have teeth."

Nathan accepted the daggers. They were freezing against his palms, the paralytic energy sending a numbing tingle through his skin. "Vex, you didn’t have to march into a warzone. The risk—"

"I’ve been climbing Towers since before you could walk, Cross. I can handle a few mutated Court rejects." Vex’s voice was gruff, like grinding stone, but a distinct layer of softness hid beneath it. "Besides. I didn’t spend days bleeding over the anvil just to let you die before you could test my work. It’s bad for the brand."

Ember trilled in agreement, spiraling around Vex’s shoulders.

"There is one last thing." Vex reached into a reinforced pouch on her belt and produced a small, hermetically sealed vial. The liquid within was a bioluminescent, deep verdant green, violently shot through with thick veins of liquid gold, pulsing with the oppressive life energy of the Empress’s Heartseed. It glowed fiercely in the red light of the burning sky, a captured star suspended in glass.

"Dr. Wren stabilized the preliminary extraction. This isn’t the full genetic formula—that will take weeks, maybe a month of synthesis. This is a catalyst dose. A primer."

She held it out. "It will forcefully initiate the process of shattering your biological mana ceiling. It will kick your internal channels open and force your cells to adapt to a higher throughput."

Nathan stared at the vial. The glass was fever-warm against his soot-stained fingers. "What will it do to me?"

"It will initiate a biological rewrite. Your mana channels. Your maximum capacity. Your physical aptitude. The Heartseed’s raw life energy will forcefully expand them—tear them down and rebuild them wider, deeper, infinitely more efficient." Vex met his eyes, her red gaze utterly serious. "But the process is violent, Cross. Your System will violently reject it. Your nervous system will fight it. It is going to feel exactly like dying."

She paused, letting the weight of the words settle. "But if it takes—if you survive the primer—you will wake up on the other side with something you have never had in your entire life. Room to grow."

Nathan stared at the green-gold liquid thrashing within the vial. He saw the reflection of his own hollow, exhausted face in the curved glass. He thought of the agonizing climb up the Tower of Ash. Every single time he had been forced to count his arrows. Every time he had hesitated before committing to a shot, calculating the lethal math of his own limitations. Every time the F-Rank ceiling had pressed down on his lungs like a physical ocean.

He thought of Mirko, dragging him half-dead out of the Whispering Dark. Of Kuro, materializing to sever a throat to save his life. Of Shiro, kneeling in the ash to swear fealty on a dead dragon’s heart. Of Garrett, Dillon, and Elise, who had marched beside him into hell without ever asking for a lighter burden.

They deserved a master who wasn’t bleeding out on empty.

He popped the cork, tipped his head back, and swallowed the fire.

The physiological response was instantaneous.

Nathan’s knees gave out. He hit the floor violently, the empty glass vial shattering as it rolled away. The Heartseed’s undiluted life energy hit his nervous system like a localized nuclear detonation. A shockwave of green and gold ripped through his biology. The Empress’s power flooded his stagnant, F-Rank mana channels, violently forcing them to expand.

The pain was absolute. Agony beyond the threshold of human endurance. Nathan felt his internal mana pathways literally tearing apart at the cellular level, reforming, and stretching wider. His physical body became a blast furnace. His blood turned to liquid plasma. His heart became a trip-hammer, beating against his ribs with desperate, terrifying, erratic force.

His Bunny Girl System interface exploded across his retinas, bleeding blinding crimson alerts:

[WARNING: Catastrophic foreign mana intrusion detected.]

[WARNING: Internal mana channels expanding beyond critical baseline parameters.]

[WARNING: Biological aptitude threshold is being forcefully exceeded.]

[CRITICAL: Immediate System stabilization required to prevent cellular collapse.]

[CRITICAL: Massive mana surge detected. Unable to contain.]

[CRITICAL: Neural summon link heavily destabilizing.]

The internal pressure crested—a maelstrom of green and gold, the Empress’s life energy violently fusing with his own, surging through his widening channels in agonizing waves of liquid fire. Nathan could feel his summons screaming through the fraying edges of the mental link—Mirko’s raw terror, Kuro’s uncharacteristic panic, Shiro’s fierce, helpless fury. They were trying to reach him. Trying to ground him. But the bio-magical surge was an overwhelming tide, and the psychic tether was snapping under the sheer voltage.
