The ruins of Stonewell smoldered behind them, but for the first time in days, Nathan felt the weight on his shoulders begin to lift.
The party had regrouped in what remained of the village square. The TCA was still stabilizing the Tower here, their containment teams moving through the wreckage with methodical efficiency. The evacuation was complete—four hundred villagers saved, every last one. The Court’s third assault on the eastern sector had failed.
But the change in Nathan was what drew every eye.
He stood at the center of the square, Moonlight in his grip, and the residue mana radiating from his body was palpable. It rippled through the air around him like heat shimmers over summer stone. It hummed in the silver string of his bow. It pulsed through the mental link, a steady, powerful current that his summons could feel in their very cores.
Mirko stood beside him in humanoid form, her new sword Dragon’s Fang gleaming in the red light. The blade’s flame edge flickered with contained wyrm-fire, responding to her grip. She had taken to the weapon immediately, swinging it through a series of practice arcs that left trails of golden fire in the air. "Hmph! This blade is worthy of this Knight! It sings with the fire of a dragon king! I shall carve the Court’s mutated monstrosities with style and grace!"
’You have said that so many times already,’ Kuro observed. She was in humanoid form as well, her new daggers— named Silence and Stillness—held loosely in her hands. The paralytic energy of the Imoogi Scale pulsed faintly along the blades. ’The sword is adequate but your repetition is excessive.’
"Adequate? ADEQUATE? This is a DRAGON-SCALE BLADE forged from Vorlagrath himself! It is not ’adequate’! It is MAGNIFICENT! It is—"
"It’s a good sword," Nathan cut in, and Mirko’s ears perked up with satisfaction. "Now focus. We’re not done yet."
Shiro stood at Nathan’s other side, her golden eyes scanning the horizon. "The Young Lord’s transformation has shifted the balance. I can feel it through the link, the mana flows freely now. your own weakness is gone" She pressed her fist to her chest. "It is an honor to witness."
"That’s not the only thing that’s gone," Vex said. She was crouched near the village well, Ember perched on her shoulder and glowing with a low, watchful heat. The Grandmaster of Smithing had been unusually quiet since the rank-up, her red eyes tracking Nathan with an expression caught between professional curiosity and something deeper. "The Court’s been operating in the eastern sector for months. They’ve got command cells everywhere. But I’ve been tracking their movements since before the Cleansing started. They coordinate from a central location... a ruined fortress in the badlands, called the Obsidian Keep. That’s where Clamour’s running his operation."
Nathan turned to face her. "You know where Clamour is?"
Unsurprised by how Vex knows anything and everything at this point.
"I know where he was three hours ago. He’s moving pieces around, directing the monster surges. But the Keep is his base of operations. I’d bet my forge on it." Vex pushed herself to her feet. "I can’t stay much longer. The TCA’s got commissions backed up—everyone wants weapons you know... But I’ll leave you with this." She pulled a small, folded map from her belt and tossed it to Nathan. "The route to the Keep. It’s about six hours east. The Court’s got patrols along the way, and the Keep itself is fortified. If you’re going after Clamour, you’ll need to be ready."
"We’re ready," Nathan said. He opened the map, tracing the route with his finger. "The Obsidian Keep. That’s where this ends. We stop Clamour, we stop the eastern Cleansing."
Vex nodded slowly. "Then I’ll leave you to it. Try not to die, Cross. I didn’t spend three days forging those weapons for nothing." She paused, her red eyes meeting his. "And whatever happened to you back there—the rank-up, the transformation—don’t waste it. You’ve got something now that most Climbers never get. Use it."
She turned and walked toward a TCA transport that was preparing to depart. Ember chirped once—a sound that might have been encouragement—and then they were gone.
Nathan looked at his party—his friends. Garrett, battered but steady, Volcan’s molten veins pulsing with renewed heat. Dillon, exhausted but grinning, Cloudy’s scales slowly regaining their crackle. Elise, composed as always, the Frost Golem beginning to regenerate its mass. And his three summons—Mirko with her flaming blade, Kuro with her paralytic daggers, Shiro with her dragon’s fire. They were tired. They were wounded. But they were ready.
"Let’s move," he said. "We’ve got a fortress to burn."
---
The road to the Obsidian Keep was a scar through a dying land.
The badlands stretched around them in every direction—volcanic rock and ash fields, the bones of a landscape that had been scoured clean by centuries of Tower activity. The sky above was a permanent red, the glow of the Cleansing’s fires reflected in the clouds. The ground trembled with the constant, grinding vibration of distant collapses. Somewhere ahead, the Obsidian Keep was waiting.
They had been walking for two hours when the first patrol found them.
"Contacts!" Nathan called, [Hunter’s Insight] flaring. "Five signatures. Court operatives. Mutated summons."
The patrol emerged from the ash like ghosts—five grey-robed figures, their summons materializing around them. A Corrupted Rock Hound. A pair of Corrupted Giant Hawks. A multi-limbed serpent that Nathan recognized as a cousin of the three-headed creature they’d fought at Greyvale.
"Kill them!" the lead operative shouted. "For the Cleansing! For the Shepherd!"
Nathan raised Moonlight. His mana reserves were at full—a sensation so unfamiliar that he almost didn’t recognize it. The constant, gnawing awareness of his own limits was gone, replaced by something that felt almost like abundance.
"Mirko, Kuro, Shiro—engage. Garrett, support. Dillon, aerial. Elise, freeze the flanks."
The party moved.
Nathan nocked an arrow and activated his new skill. [Death’s Homing Compass] flared in his vision, marking the lead operative with a faint silver sigil. He released. The arrow left Moonlight’s string and curve around the burning wreckage of an abandoned cart, past a Corrupted Hawk’s wing, and directly into the operative’s chest. The man dropped without a sound.
"Impossible!" another operative screamed. "A-Arrows can’t do that!...Right?"
"These can." Nathan marked a second target. Fired. The arrow bent around a rock formation and struck home. The second operative fell.
Shiro blurred into the fray, [Dragon King’s Ascension] leaving dragon-shaped afterimages in her wake. She reached the Corrupted Rock Hound before it could charge and struck. [Tyrant Dragon Fist] detonated against its skull—KRAK-BOOOOOM—the spectral dragon head manifesting with startling clarity, the shockwave cracking the Hound’s rocky hide. The creature staggered, and Shiro followed with a second strike that shattered it entirely.
"The Young Lord’s arrows fly true!" she called. "Now witness the dragon’s fist!"
Mirko met the serpent head-on, Dragon’s Fang blazing. The blade’s flame edge carved through the creature’s scales like paper, and [Aegis Strike] sent a crescent of green-and-gold fire through two of its heads simultaneously. "Hmph! This new blade is magnificent! I shall name it! I shall write songs about it! I shall—"
’Focus,’ Kuro said. She had materialized behind the last operative, Silence and Stillness gleaming. [Blind] caught him across the eyes, and [Assassinate] drove both daggers into his spine. The paralytic energy of the Imoogi Scale took effect instantly—the operative froze mid-scream, his body locked in place. Kuro let him fall.
The Corrupted Giant Hawks wheeled overhead, shrieking. Dillon and Cloudy engaged—Cloudy’s static discharge forcing one to bank, Dillon’s [Thunder Edge] carving through the other’s wing. The injured hawk spiraled downward, and Elise’s [Glacial Lance] caught it before it hit the ground. CRRRRACK. The hawk shattered into frozen fragments.
The surviving hawk tried to flee. Nathan marked it with [Death’s Homing Compass] and fired. The arrow followed the creature through a desperate series of aerial maneuvers, curving and twisting to match its every movement. It struck the hawk in the heart, and the creature dissolved into fading motes of corruption.
The patrol was dead. The road was clear.
Nathan lowered Moonlight, his mana still at eighty percent. The battle had taken seconds. His new aptitude made everything easier—the skill costs were lower, the regeneration was faster, the output was higher. For the first time in his climbing career, he felt like he could fight without counting every shot.
His summons gathered around him. Mirko was grinning. "Master! Did you see the way the arrows curved? It was beautiful! It was terrifying! I am so proud!"
’The homing effect will be useful against Clamour,’ Kuro observed. ’He will not be able to evade.’
"The Young Lord’s power grows," Shiro added. "The Court will learn to fear him."
Nathan nocked another arrow. "Let’s keep moving. The Keep is still hours away."
They pressed on.
---
The Obsidian Keep rose from the badlands like a black tooth against the red sky.
It was a fortress of dark stone and jagged spires, its walls studded with the banners of the Nemesis Court—grey cloth emblazoned with a symbol Nathan didn’t recognize: a circle broken by a single vertical line, like an eye that had been split in two. The Cleansing’s fires burned in braziers along the ramparts. Mutated summons prowled the perimeter—Corrupted Hounds, Giant Hawks, things Nathan couldn’t name.
The party crouched on a ridge overlooking the fortress. Nathan studied the defenses through [Hunter’s Insight], marking patrol routes, guard positions, the most vulnerable points of entry. "Clamour’s in there. Along with a full cell of operatives and their mutated summons. This won’t be easy."
"Nothing worth doing is easy," Garrett said. He was checking Volcan’s balance, his expression grim. "But we’ve got an army’s worth of power on our side now."
Nathan looked at his party—his friends, his summons, his family. They were battered and exhausted from days of fighting, but something had changed in them. The transformation had reignited their hope. The new weapons had given them new strength. They were ready.
"Clamour thinks he’s hunting us," Nathan said. His voice was quiet, but it carried. "He’s been tracking our movements since Thornfield. He’s been waiting for the right moment to strike. But he’s wrong." He raised Moonlight. "We’re hunting him."
Mirko raised Dragon’s Fang. Kuro drew Silence and Stillness. Shiro’s golden eyes blazed with dragon fire. Garrett hefted Volcan. Dillon’s Storm Striders crackled. Elise’s Frost Golem loomed behind her, its crystalline body gleaming.
"Let’s end this," Nathan said.
The party descended toward the Obsidian Keep.
