The Oblivion Drake’s killing attack never landed.
One moment, its huge mouth was opening as dark energy gathered around Fester’s raised hand. The legion’s howls grew louder. The next, a streak of silver light struck the Drake’s head. The creature screamed and pulled back, its cry shaking the red sky.
The dark energy disappeared. The legion stopped moving forward. Fester’s calm expression, already damaged by Mirko’s defiance, finally broke.
Nathan turned quickly, Moonlight raised. [Hunter’s Insight] tracked where the attack had come from.
A figure stepped out of the shadows at the edge of the foothills. His grey robes were torn and covered in dust. A Void Eel was wrapped around his feet, crackling with defensive energy.
His face was pale and tired, but his eyes remained calm and focused.
"Smithy?" Nathan’s voice was filled with disbelief. "What are you—"
"I’m sorry it took me so long." Smithy’s voice was rough and tired, like he had been running for days. But beneath his exhaustion was something Nathan had never heard from him before. It wasn’t fanaticism or coldness. It was determination.
"I’ve been following you. Watching you. Trying to decide what to do. But I couldn’t stand by anymore. Not after what they did to Ashwick. Not after what happened to the villages. Not after the children."
He stepped forward. His Void Eel moved with him, its ghostly body becoming solid and taking the shape of a weapon.
"I know you have no reason to trust me. I know I was your enemy. But right now, I’m the only thing standing between you and death. So let me help."
Fester’s voice cut through the air.
"Smithy."
The Dominator stood on the burned ground, his dark suit moving in the wind. His pale eyes burned with cold anger. Behind him, the Oblivion Drake towered over the battlefield, its void-eyes locked onto the traitor.
The legion had stopped moving, they were waiting for their master’s command.
"You would turn against me?" Fester’s voice was soft, terrible. "Against the Shepherd? Against everything we aim to build? For them?"
"For myself," Smithy said. His voice was quiet, but it carried across the battlefield. "The Cleansing isn’t what I signed up for. It’s not evolution. It’s mindless slaughter. I believed in the Court’s vision once. I thought we were building something better—a world where the strong would rise to take responsibility over the weak. But I was wrong. You’re not building anything, Fester. You’re just destroying. And I can’t be part of it anymore."
"And you think that makes you better than me?" Fester’s lips curled into something that might have been a smile on a creature less familiar with cruelty. "You think your conscience makes you strong? It makes you weak. Sentiment is weakness. Hesitation is weakness. The weak are culled, not taking care of!. That is the natural order. That is the Shepherd’s will."
"Then cull me, bitch." Smithy raised his hand. The Void Eel’s form blurred, phasing between solid and spectral. "But I won’t be dying alone today"
Fester narrowed his eyes.
"I always knew you were weak, Smithy. From the moment you refused to let your Void Eel go through the mutation process. You cared too much about it. You saw your summon as a companion instead of a weapon. That was your weakness."
His voice was full of contempt.
"And now, that weakness will be your end."
"Maybe." Smithy’s voice remained steady. "But at least I’ll die as myself, not as your Shepherd’s puppet."
---
The battle began again, and this time, things started to change.
Smithy’s Void Eel attacked the Oblivion Drake, using its ability to phase through attacks and avoid the Drake’s ghostly strikes. The Drake had already been weakened by the earlier blast and Nathan’s [Starfall Barrage], so it now had to divide its attention between the Void Eel and the party below.
Fester was also forced to split his attention. He had to control his legion while dealing with Smithy, the traitor who had turned against him.
And Smithy fought like a man with nothing left to lose.
"Fester’s control has a range!" Smithy shouted through the chaos. "If we push him back far enough, the legion will lose control! The corrupted summons aren’t acting on their own—they’re controlled by him! Break his focus, and they’ll scatter!"
Nathan immediately understood.
"You heard him! Push forward! Break their line!"
The party charged.
Mirko’s Dragon’s Fang burned brightly as she cut through the corrupted creatures. Shiro’s [Tyrant Dragon Fist] smashed through the chest of a Corrupted Construct. Kuro’s Silence and Stillness flashed—SHINK-SHINK!—and several Corrupted Hounds fell, their bodies frozen by the Imoogi Scale’s paralyzing power.
Garrett and Red held the center while Volcan exploded against the enemy horde. Dillon and Cloudy attacked from above, lightning striking the Giant Hawks. Elise used [Glacial Lance] to freeze groups of serpents at once.
The Frost Golem charged into the frozen enemies, its crystal fists smashing the corrupted creatures apart.
And Nathan.
Nathan Cross, D-Rank Archer, Level 61, fired [Starfall Barrage] into the heart of the legion. The celestial arrows rained down, and dozens of corrupted creatures dissolved into ash. He fired again—[Death’s Homing Compass] marking a cluster of mutated summons, arrows curving around obstacles to strike their cores. His mana held. His aim was true. For the first time in his climbing career, he felt like he was fighting at full capacity—not compensating, not conserving, but truly fighting.
Smithy moved through the battle like a ghost, his knowledge of the Court’s tactics letting him call out weaknesses the party would never have spotted. "Left flank! The Constructs are weakest at the joints! Right side! The Hawks’ extra eyes are vulnerable to light!" His Void Eel darted between enemies, disrupting formations, breaking the legion’s coordination.
Fester, for the first time, was on the back foot.
The Dominator’s fury was palpable—a cold, burning rage that radiated from him in waves. He raised his hand to reassert control, but Smithy’s Void Eel was there, disrupting his concentration. He turned to strike Smithy down, but Mirko’s Dragon’s Fang was already blazing toward him, forcing him to defend. Shiro’s [Dragon King’s Ascension] carried her behind him, and [Tyrant Dragon Fist] detonated against his back. The Dominator staggered—not from injury, but from the sheer audacity of the assault.
"Enough!" Fester’s voice thundered across the battlefield.
The Oblivion Drake descended, opening its huge void-filled mouth. But the legion was already falling apart. Without Fester’s full attention, the corrupted summons were losing control. Some stood frozen in place, others ran into the badlands, while some attacked each other in confusion.
Fester saw what was happening.
His pale eyes moved across the battlefield, taking in his destroyed army, his former ally’s betrayal, and the party that had refused to break.
For the first time, a hint of uncertainty appeared on his face.
"This isn’t over, Bunny King."
His voice was cold, but there was something else beneath it. Anger, yes, but also a bitter respect.
"You’ve made an Arc nemesis today. I will remember this. I will remember everything. And when the time comes, I will destroy you and everything you love."
He raised his hand. The remaining legion drew back, retreating into the shadows. The Oblivion Drake descended, and Fester stepped onto its back with the grace of a shadow fading at dawn. The creature’s void-eyes fixed on Nathan for one final, terrible moment. Then it turned, and they were gone—vanishing into the red sky like a nightmare fleeing the light.
The battle was over. For now.
---
The party collapsed after the battle.
Garrett dropped to one knee, Volcan’s molten veins glowing weakly. Red lay beside him, its wool singed but still soft. Dillon leaned against a rock, with Cloudy wrapped around his lap and giving off small sparks. Elise leaned on Aurora’s Heart, while the Frost Golem stood beside her, its crystal body covered in cracks and battle damage but still standing.
Shiro’s golden eyes were growing dim. Kuro stood quietly in the shadows, barely visible.
Nathan remained in the center, Moonlight still in his hand. His body shook from exhaustion and adrenaline.
They had survived.
Against the Oblivion Drake. Against the Dominator. Against the entire legion.
They had survived.
Smithy stood a short distance away, his Void Eel wrapped around his feet. His grey robes were torn and covered in blood, and his face was pale with exhaustion.
But his eyes remained steady as he watched Nathan approach.
"Why now?" Nathan asked. His voice was hoarse. "After everything? After the Whispering Dark? After Ashwick? After all of it?"
Smithy met his eyes. "Because I finally understood what the Court was really building. It’s not a new world. It’s a graveyard. And I couldn’t be part of it anymore." He paused, his expression shifting into something that might have been grief. "I believed in the Shepherd once. I believed the Towers were a test, that the weak deserved to perish somewhat, that the strong would inherit the earth and that their rule would be better....but I was wrong. I see that now. The Cleansing isn’t evolution. It’s just mindless genocide. And I won’t be complicit in it anymore."
Nathan studied him for a long moment. The man who had tried to recruit him in the Sunken Depths. The man who had argued with Clamour about the value of "promising sprouts." The man whose resolve had finally broken when he saw what the Court’s vision truly meant.
"I know you have no reason to trust me," Smithy continued. "I know I’ve done terrible things. I was part of the machine that destroyed those villages. I can’t undo that. But if you’ll let me... I want to help you stop Fester. Stop the Cleansing. Stop the Shepherd." He paused. "I know his patterns. His weaknesses. His blind spots. I can help you fight him."
Nathan was silent for a long moment. Then he extended his hand. "We’ll talk. But not here. Not now. We need to get back to camp and regroup."
Smithy hesitated. Then he took Nathan’s hand. His grip was cold but firm. "Thank you."
---
The return to the TCA camp was slow and quiet. Smithy attracted plenty of attention. His grey robes, familiar face, and Void Eel immediately caught the eyes of the other operatives. Several captured operatives from the Keep recognized him, and Nathan had to step in before they could confront him.
Valerie was waiting at the command tent. Her expression was difficult to read. She looked at Smithy and raised an eyebrow.
"You brought us a prisoner."
"A defector," Nathan corrected. "He saved our lives at the foothills. Fester would have killed us all without him."
Valerie studied Smithy carefully.
"The operative from the Sunken Depths. The one who tried to recruit you. And now he’s fighting on our side?"
"I’m fighting against Fester," Smithy said quietly. "And against the Cleansing. Whether that makes me an ally is for you to decide."
"Damn right it is."
Valerie turned to Nathan.
"He stays under guard until I question him myself. If his information is useful, we’ll discuss what happens next. If it isn’t..." She stopped there.
She didn’t need to say more.
Nathan nodded. "Fair enough."
The party returned to their tents. The eastern Cleansing was over. The remaining Collapse sites were becoming stable, the Court’s eastern operation had been destroyed, and the armies that had once threatened the outer regions were scattered.
But the war was far from over.
