Following the TCA debriefing, Nathan’s party gravitated toward a secluded perimeter of the encampment, putting distance between themselves and the noise of the medical tents. The sky above was still bruised with the apocalyptic red of the Cleansing, but the eastern horizon was finally beginning to bleed out—the first pale, fragile hints of natural dawn creeping over the jagged peaks.

The eastern front of the Cleansing was over. But Smithy’s story still hung heavily in the cold morning air.

Garrett sat heavily on a reinforced supply crate, the thick leather of his armor groaning under his weight. Volcan rested against his knee, the mace’s molten veins finally cooling to a dull, crusted maroon. Red lay at his boots, returned to a soft, breathing mound of fleece.

"He watched his family burn," Garrett rumbled, his voice thick with exhaustion. "And instead of letting it break him, he enlisted with the Court because they sold him a lie about fixing a broken world. That isn’t... that isn’t pure evil, Nathan. That’s just a broken man looking for a hammer."

"He is still a butcher," Elise countered. Her tone was perfectly level, but it carried the cutting edge of a winter wind. "He was a conscious cog in the machine that razed those villages. He understood the brutal mathematics of the Cleansing, and he marched in step for years. A tragic origin story does not resurrect the dead."

"It doesn’t," Nathan agreed, his voice steady. "He can’t wash the ash off his hands. But he can use them to help us dismantle the machine he helped build. Right now, that tactical advantage is what keeps the rest of the outer regions breathing."

Mirko crossed her arms defensively, her pink eyes narrowing. "Hmph! This Knight does not freely offer her back to a former enemy! But... his history is heavy. And he did pull us from the fire at the foothills. I will... tolerate his presence. Temporarily! But should he attempt a betrayal, I will cleave him from crown to heel with Dragon’s Fang! And I will compose an exceptionally dramatic ballad about his execution!"

Kuro leaned back into the shadows of a nearby canvas tent, her dark eyes analytical. ’He actively refused to subject his summon to the mutation process,’ she observed, her mental projection a cool, rational stream. ’He shielded his Void Eel from the bio-forges, despite the overwhelming pressure Fester undoubtedly applied. That indicates a hard biological and moral line he simply refused to cross. It suggests the Court never entirely owned his mind.’

Shiro stood with absolute, statuesque stillness, pressing a fist over the glowing dragon-scale tattoos on her chest. "The Young Lord holds the sovereign right to judge. We are his blade. We will strike where he points, regardless of the company we keep."

Nathan looked around the circle at his chosen family. They had waded through the Court’s meat-grinder, survived the dimension-warping horrors of the collapsing Towers, and stared down the Dominator. Now, he was asking them to sleep with one eye open next to the architect of their misery.

"We give him a guarded chance," Nathan decided, the newly forged D-Rank mana in his chest anchoring his words with undeniable gravity. "He marches with our vanguard, he bleeds his intel dry, and we see if his coordinates align with reality." He let his gaze harden. "But we do not develop amnesia. We know exactly what he is. And the absolute millisecond he flinches toward betrayal..."

"We execute," Dillon finished. The usual irreverent smirk was entirely absent from his face. Cloudy shifted tightly around his neck, letting out a sharp, warning BZZT-CRACK. "We aren’t playing heroes, Cross. We know his resume. But if his intel is solid—if he can actually map out the Court’s blind spots and choke the Cleansing—then we take the calculated risk."

Elise met Nathan’s eyes. For a long moment, the only sound was the distant hum of the TCA containment teams securing the perimeter. Then, she gave a slow, pragmatic nod. "I do not trust his motives. But I trust your command. If you believe this asset is necessary, I will hold my frost."

"Then the board is set," Nathan said. "We march west. We systematically dismantle the Court’s remaining command cells. We burn the mutation bio-forges to the ground. We sever the Cleansing before it infects the inner territories. And we hunt Darius Fester down before he realizes we have his map."

"And the Pale Shepherd Lord?" Garrett asked, the heavy title casting a shadow over the conversation.

Nathan felt a phantom chill sweep over his skin. The memory of the endless, vivid flower field surged behind his eyes—the shifting, blurred silhouette, the ancient voice echoing through the petals. Fight hard, young soul. Or I shall consume you too.

"The Shepherd is shackled by rules we don’t yet comprehend," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "He is barred from direct intervention on the board. That restriction buys us time to scale." His grip tightened slightly on Moonlight’s riser. "But the clock is ticking. Eventually, all roads lead to him. And when the time comes to step into that field... we will be ready."

They broke the huddle, walking in unison toward the eastern barricades. The sky was still scarred with fading streaks of necrotic red, but the true dawn was finally breaking the horizon—a brilliant, piercing gold that pushed back the apocalypse, inch by agonizing inch.

The eastern front of the Cleansing had finally collapsed. The macro-war was far from over.

But hey weren’t just surviving the tide. They had a roadmap, an unbound core, and a highly lethal, reluctant defector marching at their side. They were taking the offensive.

Nathan took one slow step past the camp’s barricade, the burned ground crunching under his boots. Deep inside his chest, the newly forged D-Rank core pulsed with powerful energy, filling him with strength and pushing away the last traces of his exhaustion.

He didn’t look back at the destroyed eastern front. His eyes were fixed on the western horizon, where the people behind this nightmare were waiting.

The F-Rank anchor was gone forever.

The boy who had only struggled to survive the Towers was dead, buried beneath the ashes of his struggles.
