The assault began with a single arrow.
Nathan loosed it from the ridge, not at the Reaver, or the operatives, but at a guard tower near the depot’s eastern wall. [Death’s Homing Compass] guided the shot around a rock outcropping and through the tower’s narrow window. The sentry inside collapsed without a sound.
"Signal’s sent. Move."
The party descended from the ridge like shadows. Dillon launched skyward on his Storm Striders, Cloudy spiraling beside him. Kuro had already infiltrated—Nathan could feel her presence through the link moving through the depot’s outer corridors. Mirko, Shiro, and Garrett took the main approach, their presence deliberately loud, deliberately visible. The Court’s operatives would see them coming. That was the point.
"Northern gate!" a grey-robed sentry screamed. "They’re at the northern gate!"
The depot erupted. Operatives scrambled from their posts, corrupted summons howling. A pack of Corrupted Hounds surged toward the northern gate, their legs scrabbling across the stone. A Giant Hawk launched from the ramparts, its extra eyes tracking the approaching party. Constructs of metal appendages lurched into motion
And Mirko met them like a hurricane.
"Hmph! This Knight has been waiting for a proper fight!" Dragon’s Fang blazed, the flame edge carving through the first Hound in a single stroke. [Impenetrable Fortress] flared, and the green barrier caught three more. "Come, then! Show this Knight what the western front has to offer!"
Shiro was a golden blur beside her. [Dragon King’s Ascension] carried her through the horde, dragon-shaped afterimages leaving the corrupted creatures snapping at empty air. She reached a Construct and struck—[Tyrant Dragon Fist] detonated against its chest, the spectral dragon head manifesting as the twisted metal crumpled inward. "The Young Lord’s enemies will fall! This I swear!"
Garrett and Red anchored the center. Volcan erupted against a Hound’s skull—KRAK-BOOM—the thermal pulse sending shockwaves through the pack. Red’s wool hardened to full armor, and the Mad-Sheep charged a second Hound, horns meeting corruption with crimson fury. "Keep pushing! Don’t let them flank us!"
Elise raised Aurora’s Heart. [Mana Bolts] streaked across the battlefield—BOOM-BOOM-BOOM—freezing entire clusters of corrupted creatures where they stood. The Frost Golem waded into the frozen ranks, shattering them with sweeping strikes. "The perimeter is being established. Move on the crystal!"
Smithy fought at the edge of the formation, his Void Eel darting between enemies. It phased through a Construct’s chest and solidified inside it, disrupting the creature from within. "The Reaver is moving to intercept! It’s heading for the crystal!"
Nathan saw it—the massive, twisted figure lumbering across the depot’s central courtyard, its corrupted Hound padding beside it. The Reaver was exactly as Smithy had described: grey cracked skin, pulsing purple veins, extra limbs twitching from its shoulders. Its blade of twisted metal was longer than Nathan was tall.
"Keep it off the crystal!" Nathan called. "I need time to line up the shot!"
The Reaver turned toward him. Its mindless eyes fixed on the archer on the ridge. It raised its blade and charged.
---
The Reaver was faster than anything that size should be.
It crossed the courtyard in a blur, its blade trailing sparks across the stone. Nathan barely had time to react—he rolled sideways, and the Reaver’s sword carved a trench through the rock where he’d been standing. The shockwave sent him tumbling.
[Death’s Homing Compass] flared. He marked the Reaver and fired—but the arrow bounced off its grey hide, the mutation magic too dense to penetrate. The Reaver turned, its extra limbs grasping, and lunged again.
Mirko intercepted. Dragon’s Fang clashed against the Reaver’s blade in a shower of golden sparks. "Hmph! You are large and ugly! I have faced worse!" She pushed back, [Aegis Strike] releasing a crescent of fire that caught the Reaver across the chest. The creature staggered but didn’t fall.
"It’s too heavily mutated!" Garrett called. "We need to hit it together!"
Shiro blurred in from the flank. [Tyrant Dragon Fist] detonated against the Reaver’s knee—KRAK-BOOOOOM—and the joint buckled. The Reaver howled, a sound like grinding metal, and its corrupted Hound lunged at Shiro. Red intercepted, horns catching the Hound’s throat, and Garrett’s [Impact Strike] crushed its skull.
Kuro materialized behind the Reaver. Silence and Stillness flashed—SHINK-SHINK—and the Imoogi Scale’s paralytic energy pulsed into the creature’s spine. The Reaver’s movements slowed, just slightly. Just enough.
"Now!" Nathan shouted. "Focus fire on the same spot!"
The party converged. Mirko’s Dragon’s Fang carved across the Reaver’s wounded knee. Shiro’s [Tyrant Dragon Fist] struck the same joint. Garrett’s Volcan erupted against the Reaver’s leg. Dillon’s [Thunder Edge] descended from above, lightning arcing through the cracked hide. Elise’s [Glacial Lance] punched into the exposed wound, freezing the joint solid. Kuro’s daggers drove into the Reaver’s neck, the paralytic energy spreading.
The Reaver collapsed. Its corrupted body hit the ground and it didn’t rise again.
But Nathan wasn’t watching the Reaver. He was watching the crystal.
It pulsed with intensity, as if sensing the battle. The corrupted summons fighting across the depot drew strength from it, their wounds closing, their fury growing. If they didn’t destroy it soon, the party would be overwhelmed.
"Cover me!" Nathan raised Moonlight. "[Starfall Barrage]!"
The arrow ascended into the red sky. At the apex of its flight, it split—one arrow becoming ten, twenty, fifty—a rain of celestial light that descended on the depot. The operatives scattered. The corrupted summons howled. And the arrows fell on the mutation crystal like the judgment of a star.
The crystal shattered.
The explosion was silent and absolute—a wave of purple light that swept across the canyon, washing over everything. The corrupted summons convulsed. Their dark veins flared and guttered. Their bodies began to destabilize, the mutation magic unraveling without the crystal to sustain them. Within seconds, the depot’s defenses were in ruins.
And standing at the edge of the courtyard, watching the destruction with cold, calculating eyes, was Morrigan.
She was tall and pale, her grey robes trimmed with silver. Her face was sharp, beautiful in the way a blade was beautiful. And she was looking directly at Nathan.
"So. The Bunny King comes west." Her voice was calm, almost amused. "Fester warned me about you. I didn’t believe him. I do now." She raised her hand, and the shadows around her began to twist. "But this isn’t over. It’s just beginning."
She stepped backward into the darkness and vanished.
The depot fell silent. The battle was over.
---
The party regrouped in the depot’s central courtyard. The mutation crystal was destroyed. The operatives had fled or been captured. The Reaver lay dead in a heap of dissolving corruption. And Morrigan had escaped—taking with her the knowledge of Nathan’s presence on the western front.
"We got the depot," Garrett said, breathing hard. "But we didn’t get Morrigan."
"She’ll report to Fester," Smithy added quietly. "Now he’ll know exactly where we are. And he’ll send more. He’ll always send more."
Nathan looked at the shattered remains of the mutation crystal. "Let him. We’ll be ready." He turned to his party. "This is one depot. There are more. We keep hitting them until there’s nothing left for the Court to hide behind."
Dillon cracked his neck. "Same plan, then. Hit hard. Hit fast. Don’t stop."
"Hmph! This Knight is not tired! This Knight is merely warming up!" Mirko raised Dragon’s Fang, still blazing. "Let them send their Reavers! Let them send their Dominators! We will send them back in pieces!"
’That is not physically possible,’ Kuro observed. ’Pieces of a person cannot report back.’
"It was a metaphor!"
’It was inaccurate.’
"Metaphors do not require accuracy! They require impact!"
Nathan felt the corner of his mouth twitch despite everything. "We rest. We resupply. Then we move to the next target." He looked at Smithy. "Where’s the next depot?"
Smithy pulled up a mental map. "South of here. Three days through the canyons. It’s smaller than this one, but the Court will have reinforced it by now. They know we’re targeting their supply lines."
"Then we hit it before they can reinforce it further." Nathan nocked an arrow. "We move at dawn."
