Morning came over the canyon, and the party limped out of the depot like survivors of a siege. which, Nathan supposed, they were.
The courtyard was littered with the dissolving remains of corrupted creatures, their dark energy bleeding into the stone. The depot’s walls were scarred and cracked from the night’s assault.
The grey banners with the broken-eye sigil hung in tatters, their edges singed by Mirko’s fire and Dillon’s lightning. The mutation crystals inside the vault had all been shattered, their sickly light extinguished.
The depot was dead, but so was the party’s momentum.
Garrett sat on a collapsed section of wall, Volcan propped beside him, his breathing ragged. Red sprawled at his feet, its wool soft and burned, too exhausted to maintain armor.
Dillon was slumped against a supply crate, Cloudy coiled in his lap and crackling with faint, intermittent static electricity.
Elise stood with Aurora’s Heart planted before her, the Frost Golem’s crystalline body reduced by a third from the night’s fighting. Even Mirko, who seemed to draw energy from battle itself, was leaning on Dragon’s Fang with visible weariness.
Shiro’s golden eyes were dim, her dragon-scale markings pulsing weakly. Kuro was a shadow in the background, barely visible at the edge of the courtyard.
Smithy sat apart, his Void Eel coiled limply at his feet, his grey robes torn and bloodied.
"We survived the night" Nathan said. His voice was hoarse, scraped raw by smoke and shouting.
"Smithy replied. "But Morrigan wanted us to be exhausted, and she’s succeeding."
Nathan didn’t argue. The night’s battle had been a Gruesome grind, an endless tide of corrupted creatures thrown against their defenses with no strategy, no coordination, just overwhelming numbers. Morrigan hadn’t been trying to kill them. But now, with the party running on fumes, she would strike.
"She’s out there, probably somewhere close by," Smithy continued. "Watching. Waiting for us to let our guard down. That’s how she operates. She doesn’t fight fair. Not at all"
"Then we shouldn’t let our guard down," Nathan said. "Let’s move, now. Before she can regroup."
"Move where?" Dillon asked. He didn’t lift his head. "We’re in the middle of a canyon, surrounded by corrupted monsters, with a lesser Dominator hunting us. There’s nowhere to go."
"There’s always somewhere to go." Nathan pulled up the map on his interface. "The TCA’s forward operating base is two days east. If we can reach it, we can resupply, regroup, and come back with reinforcements."
"Two days," Garrett said slowly. "Through hostile territory, with Morrigan hunting us, while we’re running on empty fumes. That’s a death march, Nathan."
"It’s better than staying here." Nathan met his eyes. "Morrigan turned this depot into a kill box. We’re sitting in the middle of it. If we stay, we die. If we move, we have a chance."
Garrett was quiet for a moment. Then he pushed himself to his feet. "Sigh, You’re right. Let’s move."
The party gathered what supplies they could; water, rations, a few salvaged potions, and began the long march east. The canyon walls rose around them, their shadows a simple comfort from the heat . The red sky was a distant ribbon overhead as every step echoed too loudly beneath it.
Morrigan’s hunt had begun,
She struck at midday.
The party was moving through a narrow part of canyon when the corrupted creatures attacked. This time, they weren’t acting like a mindless swarm. They attacked together.
Corrupted Hounds rushed in from the front, Giant Hawks dived from above and a corrupted Serpent suddenly burst through the canyon wall, ita heads snapping at them.
And behind them, at the far end of the path, a figure in grey robes watched with cold, calculating eyes.
"Morrigan," Smithy breathed.
The party formed up without hesitation. Mirko’s Dragon’s Fang burned brightly. Shiro used [Dragon King’s Ascension] to charge into the Hounds. Garrett and Red protected the rear. Dillon and Cloudy took to the air. Elise froze the sides. Nathan fired [Starfall Barrage] at the Serpent.
But Morrigan wasn’t just watching.
She was controlling the battle.
Nathan could see it with [Hunter’s Insight]—thin strands of dark mana stretched from her hands to the corrupted creatures, guiding them and controlling their movements. She was a Dominator, just like Fester, and she was using her power to turn the corrupted creatures into weapons.
"She’s controlling them!" Nathan shouted. "Smithy, is that her full range?"
"Not even close!" Smithy’s Void Eel moved between the enemies. "She’s holding back! She’s testing us! She wants to see what we can do!"
"Then let’s give her something to see."
Nathan marked Morrigan with [Death’s Homing Compass]. A silver mark appeared over her heart.
Then he fired.
The arrow curved through the air, moving between the corrupted creatures as it followed Morrigan. She saw it coming and raised her hand. A wall of dark energy appeared and blocked the arrow.
The arrow shattered against it.
"Impressive," Morrigan said. Her voice carried across the canyon, calm and cold. "Fester told me about your homing arrows. He never said they could be blocked."
"Fester didn’t know," Nathan replied as he prepared another arrow. "He didn’t know about this either."
He fired [Starfall Barrage].
The arrow flew into the sky, split into dozens of smaller arrows, and rained down on Morrigan. She was forced to retreat as her dark shield flickered under the attack.
The creatures she controlled began to slow down as their coordination broke.
"Now! Push forward!" Nathan shouted.
The party charged.
Mirko and Shiro cut through the Hounds. Garrett and Red attacked the Serpent. Dillon and Cloudy cleared the sky. Elise froze the path ahead.
Then Kuro appeared behind Morrigan, her flashing as they’re drawed.
Morrigan spun around and used a skill to block Kuro’s attack.
"The Shadow Assassin." she smiled coldly. "you’re pretty fast."
"That, i am" Kuro replied.
She disappeared into the shadows and attacked again.
SHINK!
Her daggers cut across Morrigan’s shoulder. The Imoogi Scale blade released its paralyzing energy into the wound.
Morrigan’s calm expression finally broke. "You little—"
"Now! Everyone!" Nathan shouted.
The entire party attacked at once.
Mirko’s Dragon’s Fang burned brightly. Shiro’s [Tyrant Dragon Fist] slammed into Morrigan’s back. Garrett’s Volcan exploded. Dillon’s [Thunder Edge] struck from above. Elise’s [Glacial Lance] froze Morrigan’s legs.
Then Nathan fired the final shot.
[Death’s Homing Compass] guided the arrow straight into Morrigan’s chest.
The Lesser Dominator screamed.
Dark energy exploded from her body, sending the party flying backward. And when the light faded, Morrigan was gone.
She had escaped into the shadows, leaving behind only a trail of blood and a cold feeling in the air.
"Did we get her?" Garrett asked, breathing heavily.
Smithy shook his head. "No. She’s hurt, but she’s alive"
"We have to keep moving." Nathan wiped the blood from his forehead. "We don’t stop until we reach our destination."
The party continued through the canyons. The rocky path stretched ahead, endless and dangerous. Morrigan was wounded, but she was still out there, and the journey was far from over.
