The Forward Operating Base was burning. Mirko carved through the corrupted Hounds, his flaming sword leaving trails of gold in the red air. Shiro tore through the swarm beside him, her [Tyrant Dragon Fist] shattering skulls.
Garrett and Red held the front line, Volcan erupting against the crashing tide. Above them, Dillon and Cloudy cleared the sky of Giant Hawks with jagged arcs of lightning, while Elise froze nests of serpents with [Glacial Lance] and her frost golem. In the shadows, Kuro flashed between targets, silencing enemies before they could strike.
But something was wrong.
Morrigan was too strong. Not after the wounds Kuro and Nathan had given her in the canyon. She shouldn’t have been able to command the corrupted beasts with such deadly, coordinated precision.
"It’s not just her!" Smithy shouted, his Void Eel darting through the chaos. "Something’s feeding her magic!"
Nathan triggered [Hunter’s Insight]. Glowing lines of energy revealed a dark tether stretching away from the battlefield, leading to a jagged ridge above the FOB.
A man stood there in a dark suit with red seams. Pale eyes. A cold smile.
"Fester," Nathan said.
"He’s using her as a conduit," Smithy realized. "That’s why the swarm has a hive mind. He’s bypassing his own control range."
"Then we break the connection," Nathan said, nocking an arrow. "We cut through."
The push to the ridge was a meat grinder.
Under Fester’s control, the mindless beasts fought like a trained army. They flowed around the vanguard, exploiting gaps in the party’s formation. Garrett and Red held the line, but Red’s armor cracked under the relentless pressure. Shiro’s dragon fire flickered and dimmed. Mirko’s [Impenetrable Fortress] groaned under a dozen simultaneous attacks. Dillon and Cloudy were finally driven from the sky, forced into the mud.
But they pushed.
"Hit him while he’s channeling!" Smithy yelled.
Nathan marked Fester’s heart with [Death’s Homing Compass]. A silver sigil flashed over the Dominator’s chest. Nathan fired.
The arrow wove through the air, curving past leaping monsters. A perfect shot that bent reality to strike its mark.
Fester caught it.
He didn’t even blink. His hand moved faster than [Hunter’s Insight] could track, plucking the energized arrow from the air like a toy. He looked down at the battlefield, his smile widening.
"Bunny King," Fester’s voice echoed.
He closed his hand, breaking the connection to Morrigan. Her swarm instantly fell into chaos, but it didn’t matter. Fester was taking over.
He raised a hand, and the ground shook. The Oblivion Drake descended from the red sky, its dark eyes locked on the party. The corrupted monsters froze in its shadow.
"You destroyed my depots and broke my eastern command," Fester’s voice rolled over the base with crushing authority. "But you cannot stop the Cleansing. And you—" He pointed at Nathan. "—will fall first."
The Drake roared. Fester stepped onto the battlefield.
The party was instantly overwhelmed. The Drake’s void-breath erased everything it touched—concrete, monsters, and defenders alike. Fester moved like a shadow, his magic shattering shields and throwing bodies aside. Morrigan rallied her remaining monsters to attack from the flanks.
Nathan fired a [Starfall Barrage] and marked Fester repeatedly, but the Dominator swatted the glowing arrows away with ease. Nathan’s string hummed with strain, and his newly unlocked D-Rank mana was already running empty.
"We need to fall back!" Garrett shouted, bleeding from a dozen wounds.
"To where?!" Dillon yelled. "The FOB is gone!"
Nathan looked around. The defenders were broken. Fester and the Drake were advancing. They were trapped.
Then, a horn blew.
Nathan looked east. A signal flare shot into the sky, followed by a dozen more, blooming across the smog like falling stars.
"Reinforcements!" Nathan shouted. "Hold the line!"
Fester looked at the flares. His smile didn’t fade. "Impressive. But too late."
He raised both hands. The Oblivion Drake opened its massive jaws, gathering a sphere of hyper-dense void energy—a blast that would wipe the entire area off the map.
The party braced. Mirko’s shield flared. Shiro sparked her last embers of fire. Kuro stepped in front of Nathan, daggers raised. Garrett and Dillon readied their weapons. Elise burned her last drop of mana.
And then—
"NOW!"
The voice thundered from the eastern ridge, magnified by mana. A familiar voice. One Nathan hadn’t heard since the Fallen Piece of Drak’thar.
"Silver Drake! Flanking fire!"
A tide of silver-armored Climbers crested the ridge. Captain Seraphine’s griffin plummeted from the sky, its talons carving glowing furrows across the Oblivion Drake’s spectral hide. Below, the Silver Drake vanguard crashed into the corrupted swarm’s flank, their unified shield wall shattering bone and breaking the enemy line.
"Red Dragon! Burn them all!"
Torren’s massive axe slammed into the earth. A tidal wave of fire erupted, incinerating dozens of corrupted monsters in a heartbeat. Behind him, the Red Dragon strike team surged, their Salamanders unleashing torrents of crimson death.
"Golden Hawk! Ranged support!"
The sky darkened with arrows and spells, a lethal rain that systematically erased any monsters attempting to regroup. The Golden Hawk party advanced in flawless formation, their avian summons tearing through the surviving gargoyles.
And at the vanguard of the reinforcements, riding a massive Salamander with scales the color of volcanic glass, was a figure Nathan recognized.
Derek
His scarred face a reassuring sight, and his summon was larger than ever—its heat blistering, its armor impenetrable. Across the battlefield, he met Nathan’s eyes and raised his blade in a silent, singular salute.
"Goldcrest!" Derek’s voice boomed over the carnage. "Protect the FOB! Push the swarm back!"
The Goldcrest Climbers carved through the corrupted ranks with surgical, merciless precision. Bolstered by the reinforcements, the battered TCA defenders roared, rallying their shattered lines. The momentum of the battle violently shifted.
Fester’s expression darkened. The Oblivion Drake recoiled, hissing as the combined assault of four major guilds battered its spectral form. Without Fester actively channeling her, Morrigan’s surviving swarm began to rout.
"This isn’t over," Fester said, his voice cutting through the roar of battle, frigid and absolute. "This is merely a delay. The Cleansing is inevitable. The new world will rise. And you—all of you—will burn in its ashes."
He raised a hand. The Oblivion Drake enveloped him in its shadowy wings. A heartbeat later, they dissolved into the red sky, leaving nothing but the stench of the void.
Abandoned by her master, Morrigan turned to flee.
But kuro was faster.
She materialized directly behind the fallen lesser ominator, Silence and Stillness flashing in a lethal arc. The paralytic venom of the Imoogi Scale flooded Morrigan’s system, locking her limbs rigid before she hit the ground.
The battle was over.
The aftermath was a blur of smoke, ash, and the desperate cries of the wounded. TCA medics scrambled through the ruins, tending to the injured. The reinforcing guilds locked down the perimeter, their summons standing sentinel over the devastation. The FOB was a smoldering graveyard, but it had held.
Nathan found Derek near the center of the camp. The Goldcrest heir stood beside his coiled Salamander, covered in monster blood and soot. He offered Nathan a tired, genuine smile—an expression Nathan had never seen on him before.
"You look terrible, Cross," Derek said.
"You look worse."
"Fair." Derek extended a gauntleted hand. Nathan took it, the grip iron-firm. "When word hit that the western front was under attack, Goldcrest volunteered. The other guilds followed. Celestial Peak’s Valerie coordinated the deployment from eastern command—she’s still back there, but she sent half her Climbers with us."
Nathan nodded, the adrenaline finally leaving his system. "I’m glad you came."
"Yes, me too." Derek looked out at the burning horizon. "Fester got away. But at least one of them is in chains, and their western operation is crippled. That’s a win."
"A small one."
"The best kind, when you’re fighting a war." Derek turned back to him. "We’ll get him, Cross. Fester. The Court. All of them. But right now, you need to rest. Your party is running on empty."
Nathan looked over at his team. Mirko, Kuro, Shiro, Garrett, Dillon, Elise, Smithy. They were battered, bleeding, and exhausted. But they were alive.
In the back of his mind, the Shepherd’s warning echoed: When the Cleansing ends, I will come for you.
Let him come. They would be ready.
"Yeah," Nathan said quietly. "We all do."
