My Pet Slime Gives Me 10x Rewards

Chapter 2: Exploring my First Dimensional Rift

Who was she? The leader of that hunter group, Mike, had said there was just one woman in it, whose name was Sarah.

But Sarah was already waiting when I showed up. That red-haired woman was someone new, someone like me.

Well, not like me, since she actually looked capable of fighting. She had an overcoat hiding most of her clothes, but I still spotted the hilt of her sword near her waist. She wasn’t useless like me.

We moved downstairs, passing a few people walking through the market at such an early hour.

The first levels were still open to anyone, but soon I spotted yellow tape put up by the local police, aided by the hunter’s guild, to keep anyone from entering without permission.

As soon as we got close enough, a policeman showed up and stopped us. Mike was in front, leading the way, so he was the one doing the talking.

"Excuse me," the officer said, "you can’t come in here. This is a dangerous area with a dimensional rift."

Mike took out his hunter ID and showed it to the officer, clearing the way for us.

Not just him, but everyone else in our group showed their ID too. Well, not me.

I didn’t have one. To get one, I had to go through the academy, a training program to make sure I knew how to use my powers properly and fight. But with my strength? Impossible to get a spot. My ability was an F rank, completely garbage in the overall scheme of things.

"I don’t have an ID," I said.

The officer frowned. Mike came to help us through. Not out of goodwill, but because he wanted a mule.

"We hired him," Mike said, "this is the authorization for him to go with us."

He showed the officer a contract stating that I could enter dungeons with them, as long as I acknowledged I was risking my life.

The officer read the contract, or acted like he did, because he finished way too fast. I don’t think he actually read that shit.

"Alright, you can go. The current time limit for hunters with your rank is 10 hours inside. If you don’t come out, we’ll send hunters to rescue you, and that costs money, as I’m sure you’re aware."

Mike smiled at the officer.

"Of course, we know."

Then, one by one, we stepped through the dimensional rift.

Mike went first, followed by the rest of his team. The red-haired woman and I were the last ones to go.

She talked to me before we went in.

"Are you a new member like me?"

I nodded.

"Yes, but I’m no official hunter, just someone who carries their stuff and gets paid almost nothing for it."

That was the hard truth. Ten monster crystals weren’t that much. I had to use them for my growth, and maybe sell a few to buy food. Rent? That was a different beast. I still didn’t know how I’d get the money for it.

"I see," she said, smiling at me. God, she was beautiful. "I’m no official hunter either. Well, not yet. I’m in my last year at the academy. This is an important mission for me; I need to get this right."

The academy wanted her to showcase her skills inside an actual dungeon. That’s why she was there with the same group as me.

"Maybe we can help each other," I said. "You know, make sure we both get out of here alive."

I thought she’d been nice to me, contrary to the air of superiority she’d shown before, but I was wrong.

"How can you help me, though? Aren’t you weak, incapable of fighting? Try not to die, as that can make me look bad."

She walked over to the blueish dimensional rift and passed through it, vanishing completely. I was the only one left.

I stood there for a few seconds, staring at the shifting rift in front of me. A dangerous place to go, yet there I was.

Fuck. If they were paying me well, at least, I would go risk my life with a smile on my face. But 10 fucking monster crystals...

I went in anyway. Everything around me shifted, and my stomach lurched, like I was inside a car with a driver going full drift mode.

-------------------

A foggy forest. The trees around me looked dead. A place that seemed ripped straight from the set of a horror show.

"Why did it take you so long?" Mike shook his head. "For a moment, I thought you had run away."

"Anyway, according to my research, this place has weak monsters. Low-level wraiths and undead. We should be fine if we stick to this area. The deeper we go, the more dangerous it becomes."

They started talking about their combat plan, including their formation, how their powers would work together in a fight, and how they would act if they had to run.

All of that was useless to me. I wasn’t part of the conversation. The only thing I had to worry about was carrying their stuff and not dying with their loot.

"Alright, let’s move," Mike said, leading the way. "Let’s make good use of our 10 hours and get as many crystals as we can."

The group moved through the dead forest, each one looking in a different direction, making sure we weren’t attacked by surprise.

I hated the ominous feeling of that place. Like something was always watching us. I swear I caught a few shadows behind the trees, just staring. Maybe my head was playing tricks on me.

Either way, even though we hadn’t fought anything in the first five minutes, I was already miserable. They were using the downtime to talk shit about me.

Sarah was the one who loved it most. Her and Mike.

"Tell me, Vince, how the fuck do you have such a useless ability? F tier, really? How can you even progress in life with something like this? Honestly, it was better not to awaken and stay a normal human," Sarah said, laughing in my face again.

I didn’t say a word. I wanted to, but it would only make things worse.

When the first group of undead showed up, I smiled. At least they’d be busy with the fight, and not with me.
