My Pet Slime Gives Me 10x Rewards
Chapter 30: The Cheat Code for Unlimited Time in the RiftFirst time seeing an Unstable Rift, and that happened. How was that even possible?
Something unnatural had gone on, I was sure of it. Some strange connection between me and this Unstable Rift.
The reason had to be my ability. A pocket dimension wasn’t that far off from the places we ended up in when passing through dimensional rifts.
Almost the same thing, in some ways. Maybe someday I could figure out how to change my pocket dimension too.
Anyway, back to what mattered. I was trapped. The portal I could’ve used to get back was gone for good.
I looked around, trying to figure out where I was. A plain, it seemed. The sky was a clear, bright blue, sunlight hitting my face. Looked like a normal rift from the inside.
Maybe it was just the portal that was unstable, and the inside was fine? Just a hunch, of course. No one really knew much about these places, especially not me. First time I’d even heard of one.
The first thing I did was grab some rocks and mark where the portal used to be. My way of making sure I knew the spot in case it opened again.
But that was the problem. It could open in a few hours, a few days, a few weeks.
I wasn’t optimistic it would show up again anytime soon, so how was I supposed to survive?
Balthazar had said it, and I knew it well. Hunters couldn’t stay inside rifts for long. The energy in there destroyed our bodies. Even the strongest hunters couldn’t stay indefinitely.
I waited a few hours.
1...
2...
3...
No monster came to attack me, which was weird, but what I actually wanted was for the portal to reappear, and it didn’t.
What else could I even do? Go look for shelter, water, food? None of that mattered if I ended up crushed by the rift itself.
My best option was to wait and see if the portal showed up again, so that’s what I did, waiting a few more hours.
By the 12th hour, my body, already banged up from those burns, started hurting even worse. Like something heavy was crushing my bones.
That was the beginning of the end. S-rank hunters could last 24 hours or more, and the record was 48, but that was because their bodies were way stronger than mine.
I didn’t have high attributes yet, so mine wasn’t built to last that long.
Then, suddenly, some kind of energy came down from the sky and hit me. So heavy. Maybe it was messing with gravity around me?
I couldn’t stay standing anymore, my face hitting the ground. The ground beneath me gave way as my body sank deeper, getting buried, unable to withstand whatever that force was.
My right arm cracked. Broken. The pain I was already in was so bad I barely even registered my arm snapping.
Screams of agony echoed across those plains. If anything was out there, it definitely heard me.
With no other option and barely any strength left, I tried something. I summoned my dimensional cube and had it absorb me. I went straight into my pocket dimension, vanishing from that place.
Once inside, the unknown force stopped trying to kill me. Instant relief.
My body didn’t feel like it weighed a ton anymore. Only after going through that shit did I realize how much better it was to just be healthy.
Well, the broken arm was still there, but it beat dying.
Still, hiding in my pocket dimension didn’t mean I was safe. I couldn’t stay in there forever. What would happen when I came back out?
Only one way to find out.
I left the pocket dimension, already ready to hop back in if I had to.
The ground was still sunken in. I closed my eyes, bracing for the worst.
Nothing happened.
The unknown energy from the sky, the same thing every hunter in the world feared, even S-rank ones, was gone.
I couldn’t believe it. A few minutes passed with me just standing there, waiting to see if it would hit again. It didn’t.
My pocket dimension was the key. I could dodge the energy everyone feared just by hiding in there and hopping back out.
That was basically a cheat code for exploring dimensional rifts no one else dared to touch. I didn’t have to follow some strict time limit anymore.
The rules didn’t apply to me.
Realizing that changed how I looked at a lot of things, including this Unstable Rift.
Before, I’d just been standing where the portal used to be, hoping it would show up again so I could leave. Relying on luck, basically.
But now that I knew I could dodge getting crushed, why wait around? I could explore this rift before anyone else got the chance. Be the first one to actually do it.
I couldn’t help but smile. If I survived this, how much stronger would I be by the time I made it back to the academy?
How long would I even be stuck in here?
With my plans shifting, I started moving. First thing was finding fresh water. I could hold out a while longer without food, but water, no way.
I honestly should’ve packed some supplies in my pocket dimension. Stupid of me not to use my powers to their full potential. Then again, I couldn’t have predicted some rift would just yank me in.
Anyway, the upside of being on a plain was that I could see way further ahead with barely any trees blocking the view.
Even before I moved from that first spot, I spotted a stream way out on the horizon. That’s where I headed.
The adrenaline from earlier had worn off, so the pain hit harder now. My right arm was completely fucked, and it’d take a long time to heal in the shape I was in.
Bob wasn’t even awake yet, so I couldn’t count on him to heal me either.
I used my cube, shifting it into a surfboard shape, hopped on, and flew toward the small river.
Way faster than walking, and the breeze on my face felt good too.
I noticed the sun starting to go down. Night was coming, and with it, higher odds of running into something dangerous in this rift.
This place could have any kind of monster, even ones way stronger than me, like that flying eye from the other rift.
If that was the case, I might’ve survived that unknown energy just to get killed by some beast instead.
Once I reached the river, I jumped off my cube and drank the water in massive gulps. My thirst was insane.
Didn’t care if the water was safe to drink or not. Looked clean, and there wasn’t anything else around anyway, so screw it, this would have to do.
While drinking, I looked ahead. The river ran down into a valley, into a dense forest, way different from the plains I’d just left.
The vegetation was a darker green, and the air looked way more humid. Maybe it had rained recently?
But something down there made me stop everything. I couldn’t believe what I was looking at.
I saw... people.
