The blond guy’s name was Zeph. Weird name if you ask me, but that’s just my opinion.

He’d been talking shit not just to me but to Tom too, since we didn’t fit into his little group of people who glazed him just because he came from a wealthy, famous family of hunters.

Honestly, I didn’t care much about him. Took me this long to even learn his name, so that should tell you how insignificant he was to me.

Since the day I got back, my name had been the hot topic around the academy. People just didn’t buy that I got lucky enough to escape the way I did. If it was that easy, someone else would’ve done it before.

Finding a safe spot inside the rift where the energy didn’t touch me? What bullshit. But hey, no one came around asking too many questions, so it kind of worked out.

"This is just a test to see who’s fit to start going on missions now," Dorian said, looking over each new student.

Even Camille was there, though she was way ahead of everyone else. She’d take the test, sure, but everyone already knew she’d pass.

She’d already been on missions, being in her final year. That was actually during one of those missions that she... Well, I’m not going through that again.

Zeph and I were in the arena. I didn’t even remember what his ability did, honestly, and it didn’t matter much anyway.

My attributes were miles beyond his level. I had a plan that didn’t even require using my ability at all. All I needed was my agile body to close the distance in under a second.

"Remember, this is just a test, so no attacking to kill or cause heavy, permanent damage. Passing out is fine, though, so feel free to knock yourselves out."

"Ready?"

Before Dorian let us start, Zeph wanted to say a few things in front of everyone. Guy was a narcissist, honestly, for fuck’s sake.

"Attention, everyone," he said, smiling and puffing out his chest like he’d just left leg day, I mean chest day, at the gym. "Witness this display of skill. I’ll teach this guy a lesson, and show everyone that luck alone doesn’t get you far."

A few people cheered. Those were his little followers, the ones who agreed with anything he said.

Dorian caught that and clearly couldn’t believe it.

"Are you both ready?"

"Yes," I said, flat.

"Yes, let’s do it."

"Alright, on the count of 3."

"1..."

"2..."

I was already set before the countdown even finished, running the fight through my head. Zeph wasn’t far from me. I knew I could close that gap easily with my agility, now sitting at a whopping 164 points.

Over the past week, the bloodline had stabilized, giving me even more VIT and AGI, which was just fantastic, honestly.

Anyway, with my current speed, the distance between us, and his slow reaction time, I was confident I could reach him in under a second.

I dashed toward him, pouring everything I had into it, the tendons in my legs working like springs, launching me forward at him fast.

The look of shock on that bastard’s face was priceless. Enjoyed it for a couple seconds before closing in and hitting him on the neck with the palm of my hand.

A thud echoed through the gymnasium. Zeph dropped, unconscious.

Dorian walked over, just as shocked by what he’d seen. Checked his vitals.

"He’s fine, just unconscious," he said.

The whole gymnasium went dead silent. Not just because of what happened to Zeph, but because of how fast I’d moved.

They couldn’t even follow my movement with their eyes, I was sure of it. I could tell every single one of them was already replaying the fight in their heads, wondering if they’d stand a chance against me. Obviously not.

Dorian cleared his throat and raised his voice so everyone could hear.

"Since Zeph wasn’t able to show his skills, I’ll personally test him later to see if he’s ready for missions. Vincent, congratulations, you passed."

Felt good, finally teaching Zeph a lesson. That bastard thought way too highly of himself just because he came from a powerful family. Didn’t mean shit to me.

After the fight, I walked back over to my group. They all looked shocked, throwing questions at me like "how did you even do that?"

"I just ran at him, that’s it."

"Bullshit!" they said, all at once.

Speaking of my friends, all of them passed the test too, meaning they could join missions from now on. Glad they did.

Selena grabbed my arm right after we all passed.

"We could form a team and go on missions together now," she said. "Exploring dungeons, like that last time."

Selena and her brother had already been on missions before, since I’d seen them in that same rift earlier. They were new students too, but they’d joined a few months ahead of me, Ethan, Tom, and the rest.

They only took this test because Dorian was our new teacher now, kind of an obligation on their part. Same with Camille.

Still, they weren’t official hunters yet, just cleared to go on missions.

Me, on the other hand, I was aiming for a temporary hunter ID, which was a whole different thing entirely.

So right as Selena floated the idea of teaming up, Frederic walked into the gymnasium.

Everyone went quiet instantly, even Dorian, showing the principal the respect he was owed.

"Vincent," Frederic said, loud enough for the whole room to hear. "Come with me. Your test to become a temporary C-Rank Hunter is happening shortly."

Center of attention again. Whispers spread through the crowd, and even Dorian frowned, clearly questioning what was going on.

"Sir," Dorian said, "are you sure about this? C-Rank Hunter? Isn’t that too soon for him?"

"Well, according to him, his 3 main attributes are past 100 points, so he’s already at the C-Rank threshold. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll let you know."

For some reason, Frederic was saying all this out loud, in front of everyone. Wasn’t that sharing a bit too much of my business with the other students? Now they all knew I might become a C-Rank Hunter, assuming I passed, along with my actual attribute numbers.

I said my goodbyes to the group and left the gymnasium, following Frederic.

"A hunter arrived at the academy earlier today," Frederic said. "He’s here on behalf of the Hunter Society, to test your current power and see if you’re fit for the temporary C-Rank position."

The Hunter Society ran everything, including the academy we were standing in. Frederic was principal because he’d passed the tests to become one, and because the Hunter Society approved of him.

If they hadn’t approved, he’d never have gotten the position in the first place. That’s how much weight their word carried.

We walked through the academy, into the main building. I hadn’t had classes in there yet.

Since we were new students, the main focus of the curriculum was making sure we could fight and actually use our abilities well.

The theoretical side, learning about rifts, different monster species, artifacts, or history in general, wasn’t much of a priority in the first three months.

Inside the main building, I looked around, trying to spot someone.

"Where’s Balthazar?" I asked Frederic.

Balthazar, the teacher who’d shown us the Unstable Rift, the one who’d tried to save me. That old man was a legend. I’d wanted to talk to him again since I got back from the rift, but for some reason, I hadn’t run into him at all.

"He’s currently doing some research, but he’ll be back next month."

I wasn’t fully buying that from Frederic, but I didn’t push it further.

We walked over to one of those doors with passcodes. Students usually didn’t come near it. The guard standing next to it didn’t say a word.

Frederic punched in the passcode, not letting me see it, of course. A metal staircase leading down opened up in front of us. We headed down.

"The person testing you is downstairs, waiting," Frederic said. "I think you’ll be glad to see them. But fair warning, they usually send... how do I put this, soft examiners. This time, though, for some reason, they sent someone pretty unique to test you."

I had no idea what Frederic meant by that. My mind was already running through different scenarios, trying to guess who they’d sent to test me.

At the bottom of the stairs, another metal door. This one didn’t have a passcode, so we just walked in.

Inside, it looked basically like one of those training rooms students could use. The examiner had already changed the scenario to a beautiful forest with a waterfall running through it.

All fake, obviously, but it looked damn real. Probably using devices powered by someone’s ability, no clue really. Maybe an illusion type, like Ethan’s. Felt like I was actually standing in the forest. That’s how convincing it was.

And right then, I saw exactly what Frederic meant. They usually sent B-Rank, sometimes A-Rank examiners for tests like this.

But for me? They sent someone I knew very well. An S-Rank hunter.

"L-Lion Heart? What the fuck?"
