Chapter 114: Noah Wants Three Millions
Noah remained silent for several moments after Garran’s consciousness meeting ended. The campaign map had disappeared, but the new objective remained fixed in his mind.
For eighteen planetary months, Viridian had been confined to the eastern sector while the other awakened gods fought their own campaigns, yet that restriction was now gone and every remaining province of Caldris had become part of Noah’s responsibility.
The scale of the task forced him to reconsider how he intended to use his forces. Viridian already maintained an enormous military presence on Edras, with the original million-man deployment completed and distributed across the five conquered eastern provinces.
Those forces were enough to resume the offensive, but Noah had no intention of stripping the eastern provinces merely to create another field army.
Caldris was far larger than the territory Viridian had already conquered, and the northern, southern, western, and central sectors still contained numerous provinces, fortified cities, field armies, and the kingdom’s political heart.
Any advance would require soldiers capable of fighting new campaigns while occupation forces remained behind to secure previous victories.
Noah shifted his attention away from Edras and returned his divine perception to his own planet, where Viridian represented only one of four great goblin empires.
Across the central continent stood the Varkesh Empire, powerful, populous, and supported by an extensive military bureaucracy that had developed through centuries of consolidation and war.
To the north, the Skargrim Empire ruled harsher lands where armies had learned to maintain long supply routes through difficult terrain, while across the ocean the Luminous Empire controlled the isolated western continent that had once developed separately before exploration and trade connected it permanently to the rest of the goblin world.
All three empires had watched Viridian answer the first Divine War mandate. They had seen one of their rival civilizations receive the privilege of fighting beyond their world, and over the following planetary year they had heard reports of provincial capitals falling, human armies being defeated, and foreign lands being placed beneath goblin rule.
Now Noah called upon them as well.
His will spread across the planet through the faith connecting him to his followers, reaching temples, shrines, rulers, priesthoods, and religious institutions throughout the four continents.
The message carried a command that required little interpretation: Varkesh, Skargrim, and Luminous would each contribute one million soldiers to the Divine War.
The scale of the mandate reached the imperial courts before most ordinary citizens understood what had occurred. Three million additional goblins were being called to fight beyond their world, and each empire suddenly faced the largest external mobilization in its history.
In Varkesh, military ministers and provincial commanders were summoned into emergency councils while scribes began calculating professional formations, reserves, engineers, crossbow companies, siege crews, healers, and logistical personnel.
One million soldiers represented an enormous commitment, yet the empire possessed enough population and military infrastructure to answer without stripping every city and frontier of defenders.
The Varkesh emperor accepted the mandate before the first complete mobilization orders had even been prepared. Viridian had gained enormous prestige by becoming the first empire selected for the Divine War, and Varkesh had no intention of appearing reluctant now that the same opportunity had reached them.
Provincial mustering grounds opened across the central continent as stored weapons were inspected, wagons were requisitioned, and officers began organizing the selected forces into manageable marching columns.
The army would include more than frontline infantry, because engineers, siege crews, crossbowmen, scouts, healers, quartermasters, and supply formations were required if one million soldiers were expected to campaign on another world.
Military planners divided the deployment into stages rather than attempting to move the entire force along the same roads. Bridges were reinforced, supply depots were established along the route, and civilian traffic was redirected away from roads that would soon carry columns stretching for enormous distances.
Farther north, the Skargrim Empire responded with equal speed. Regional commanders began identifying formations that could be released for the Divine War while still leaving sufficient forces to defend the northern territories.
Soldiers accustomed to cold climates, mountain roads, and difficult marches were selected alongside engineers, scouts, crossbowmen, siege crews, and extensive support personnel.
Among the Skargrim, Noah’s command quickly became more than an ordinary military obligation. Viridian warriors had already crossed into another world and fought under a direct divine mandate, while Skargrim soldiers had spent the previous year hearing stories about victories on Edras.
Being chosen now became both a religious honor and an opportunity for the northern empire to prove that its armies deserved a place beside Viridian.
Their first formations began moving south through several routes, with temporary depots established along the way and supply wagons carefully distributed between the marching groups. The million-man contribution would take time to concentrate, but the machinery of the northern empire had already begun pushing soldiers toward Viridian.
The Luminous Empire faced the most complicated movement because its western continent was separated from Viridian by an ocean.
Its response therefore centered on the ports, where military units were ordered toward coastal cities while merchant vessels, transport ships, and state fleets were requisitioned for what would become the largest troop movement across the sea in goblin history.
Warehouses filled with grain, preserved food, weapons, replacement equipment, medical supplies, and siege materials.
The same ocean that had once isolated Luminous from the other goblin civilizations now became the route carrying its soldiers toward a war on another world.
The empire could not move one million troops in a single voyage, so the deployment was divided into waves. Early convoys carried professional infantry, engineers, command staffs, and supplies required to establish receiving camps in Viridian territory, while later fleets would continue transporting additional formations until the full commitment had crossed.
Viridian itself received a separate part of Noah’s mandate. The empire was ordered to prepare its roads, depots, ports, camps, and the region surrounding the Gate Beyond Heaven for the arrival of three million allied soldiers.
The response transformed the Gate region almost immediately. Existing camps that had once supported Viridian’s million-man deployment were expanded outward, while new staging areas were marked across nearby plains.
Warehouses were enlarged, wells were dug, temporary barracks were constructed, and additional roads were prepared to keep incoming formations from overwhelming the existing infrastructure.
Military traffic was separated from civilian movement along the busiest routes. Supply wagons received scheduled arrival periods, engineers reinforced bridges, and local administrators began stockpiling food at multiple points rather than allowing millions of soldiers to depend on a single enormous depot.
For the first time in the planet’s history, the military institutions of all four great goblin empires were preparing for the same campaign.
Varkesh officers arrived in advance to coordinate marching schedules with Viridian administrators, Skargrim representatives established their own staging arrangements, and Luminous officials prepared receiving stations near the ports where their transports would unload.
Each empire retained its own commanders, banners, military traditions, and internal hierarchy, but all understood that once their soldiers entered Edras they would become part of the broader campaign directed from the conquered eastern provinces.
Noah watched the mobilization spread across his planet and considered the numbers involved. Viridian had already sent approximately one million soldiers through the Gate before accounting for casualties, occupation requirements, and support assignments, while Varkesh, Skargrim, and Luminous would each add another million.
Once the new deployment was completed, roughly four million goblin soldiers would have entered Edras. Even after garrison requirements and losses were considered, the army available for the next phase of the war would dwarf the force that had originally invaded Eastwatch.
Varkesh formations were the first to begin arriving in large numbers because their geography allowed them to reach Viridian more quickly than the other two empires.
Long military columns appeared along the roads leading toward the southern empire, accompanied by wagons, engineers, scouts, and officers responsible for maintaining sufficient distance between marching groups.
Viridian citizens gathered along roads and town walls to watch unfamiliar imperial banners pass through their territory. Many had relatives serving on Edras, while others had spent an entire year hearing reports about battles against humans and the five provinces now governed by Viridian beyond the Gate.
The arriving Varkesh soldiers carried themselves with the confidence of an empire that had spent generations considering itself one of the planet’s strongest powers.
Viridian veterans possessed something they did not, however, because the southern soldiers had already crossed into another world and returned with experience from a war no other goblin civilization had yet fought.
That difference created rivalry, but the divine mandate kept it disciplined. Varkesh soldiers wanted to prove themselves, while Viridian soldiers had little need to explain what they had already accomplished.
Skargrim formations began appearing from the north soon afterward. Their journey had been longer and more difficult, but the columns remained organized as they entered Viridian-controlled territory and were directed toward separate staging grounds to prevent congestion.
The first Luminous convoys arrived at approximately the same period. Rows of sails appeared beyond Viridian’s western ports as transport vessels approached in organized groups, unloaded soldiers and equipment, and prepared to return across the ocean for additional formations still waiting on the western continent.
The port districts became enormous military staging areas as Luminous infantry marched inland while supply wagons carried weapons and stores toward temporary depots.
Engineers supervised the movement of siege components and heavier cargo, and local officials worked continuously to prevent the influx from paralyzing civilian trade.
Three military streams were now converging on the same destination. Varkesh approached from the central continent, Skargrim descended from the north, and Luminous troops moved inland from the western ports, with each route eventually leading toward the Gate Beyond Heaven.
The staging grounds around the Gate expanded until they resembled a temporary city. Tents and barracks covered enormous stretches of land, supply wagons arrived continuously, and officers from several empires crowded command stations responsible for organizing the passage into Edras.
Priests gathered near designated departure areas to conduct ceremonies for soldiers preparing to leave their world.
Many of the newcomers stared at the Gate with open fascination, while Viridian veterans moved through the staging grounds with the familiarity of soldiers who had already crossed it before.
Stories spread quickly between the armies as Varkesh soldiers asked about human cavalry and city walls, Skargrim scouts questioned veterans about terrain and marching conditions, and Luminous engineers sought information about Caldris fortifications.
The answers carried the confidence of an army that had already conquered five provinces, giving the arriving troops their first practical glimpse of the war they were about to enter.
On Edras, Rakhar received the full mobilization report while reviewing preparations for the next campaign. He had expected additional soldiers after Noah received authority over all of Caldris, but three million reinforcements forced him to rethink the scale of everything that followed.
Rakhar ordered new staging grounds constructed around the Edras side of the Gate and instructed the eastern administrations to prepare routes capable of dispersing arriving armies rapidly.
Eastwatch would remain the primary receiving region, but incoming formations would need to move toward the other eastern provinces before congestion around the portal became unmanageable.
Back on Noah’s planet, the first fully organized Varkesh formations finally reached the Gate. Units entered according to schedules established by the combined staging command, disappearing through the portal in disciplined groups while additional columns continued approaching from beyond the camps.
Skargrim soldiers were still arriving along the northern roads, and Luminous troops continued marching inland from the ports as more ships crossed the western sea. Behind all of them came additional formations, wagons, engineers, healers, siege crews, and supply personnel until the roads leading toward Viridian seemed filled with armies without end.
Noah observed the convergence from above as the first Varkesh formations disappeared through the Gate into Edras. The Divine War had begun with Viridian alone, but the campaign against Caldris had now become a planetary undertaking as three million additional soldiers from Varkesh, Skargrim, and Luminous marched through Viridian toward the Gate Beyond Heaven.
