"Sir, we received another tip."
Julius peeled his eyes from the files in his hand and looked at the agent who had just walked into the room.
"What is it?"
"It’s about Marshal Di Carpio."
His brows rose.
For the past several days, Interpol had been keeping a close eye on everything surrounding the Di Carpio family. An attack on a family of that scale was bound to create problems.
And it screamed bloodshed.
Now, Marshal Di Carpio himself had suddenly disappeared.
Julius closed the file in his hand.
"Where is he?"
The agent walked toward the table and placed another file in front of him.
"We received information that Marshal entered this country several hours ago."
Julius frowned as he opened the file.
"That’s not all," the agent continued. "According to our source, several people from the underground have been moving toward the same area."
"What area?"
The agent pointed at the map. "This city."
Julius’s frown deepened.
He knew the place.
Almost everyone who had spent enough time chasing international criminals knew about it.
The city technically belonged to the country, but the government had little to no control over what happened inside it. Mercenaries, smugglers, assassins, and all sorts of criminals had made the place their home over the years.
As long as no one caused trouble outside its borders, the authorities rarely bothered interfering.
"You said people from the underground are moving toward the city?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
"We don’t know." The agent shook his head. "But with what’s been happening to the Di Carpios, there are probably many people who want a piece of Marshal."
Silence fell upon the room.
That was true.
The underground was merciless.
The moment people smelled weakness, even those who had once bowed their heads would start showing their teeth.
Julius stared at the agent for several seconds before looking back at the map.
Of all places, why did these bastards have to choose a city filled with mercenaries?
His expression hardened.
He closed the file and turned to the agent.
"Get the team ready," he ordered. "We’re taking these bastards in one sweep."
Julius rose to his feet and grabbed his jacket, already heading for the door.
"We’re moving now."

At the same time...
It had been hours since Marshal and his men arrived.
Scott had already positioned men around the entire property. Armed mercenaries were stationed outside, while more were scattered throughout the surrounding woods.
The men guarding the property weren’t ordinary thugs. Many of them had spent most of their lives fighting for money. Some had served in the military. Others had worked for organizations that no longer officially existed.
And most importantly, they knew the city better than anyone coming from outside.
"Damn it." Marshal clicked his tongue as he chugged another drink, his face twisting—not because of the alcohol. "What now? Still nothing?"
He turned to Scott, who was supervising a team gathered around a table nearby.
"Nothing, sir." Scott shook his head. "Do not worry. Everything is going according to plan."
"Plan, plan, plan—damn it!"
Marshal slammed the glass onto the table.
His distress had only grown with every passing hour.
A few days ago, he had all the freedom, time, and wealth in the world. Now, here he was, locked inside this place, surrounded by armed men, hoping they would all survive the night.
Scott studied him but said nothing.
Instead, he shifted his attention back to the new team they had formed as an extra layer of protection around Marshal.
"Check every team on the perimeter," he ordered calmly. "I want them reporting every three minutes. If anyone fails to respond, consider them dead, and the perimeter breached."
"Yes, sir."
The men nodded and immediately radioed the teams guarding the surrounding areas.
One after another, voices crackled through their radios, each team giving only their designated code to confirm their identity.
*****
"North Four, clear."
A man standing in the woods lowered the radio from his mouth after giving the code assigned to his team for the hour. He clipped the device back onto his waist.
Crack.
His head snapped toward the sound of a twig breaking somewhere nearby. He immediately raised his rifle and scanned the woods.
"Who’s there?" he called, cautiously approaching the direction of the sound.
The moment he caught sight of a person’s shadow, he positioned his rifle and prepared to aim. Then a familiar voice reached him.
"It’s me—ack! It’s me!"
The man furrowed his brows as the figure stepped out of the darkness. His shoulders relaxed as soon as he recognized him.
"What the hell are you doing?" he frowned.
"Shh!" The other man clicked his tongue as he reached down and slapped his leg. "Something keeps biting me. These damn woods are full of insects."
"This isn’t the time for that," the first man grumbled. "It’s just mosquitoes. Get over it and stop getting distracted. You might die if you—"
PHEW!
His eyes widened as his breath hitched and his hand instinctively flew to his chest. He slowly lowered his gaze.
Blood was already spreading across his shirt.
"What...?"
His eyes returned to the man standing in front of him, staring at the pistol with a silencer that was now pointed directly at his chest.
"What are you..."
The other man smiled.
"Sorry," he said casually. "Someone doubled their offer."
He shrugged. "Nothing personal. Just business."
THUD!
The mercenary watched his former comrade collapse onto the ground.
Without another thought, he marched toward the body, took the radio from the man’s waist, and tucked it onto his own. Then he grabbed the corpse by the shoulders and dragged it deeper into the woods.
A short distance away, several more bodies were already hidden among the trees.
It was the rest of his team.
"Heh." He smirked as he tossed the newest body alongside them and turned away as though nothing had happened.
But just as he took his first step—
"That’s not very nice."
The man froze at a woman’s voice. His pistol immediately rose as he spun around, his eyes darting through the darkness.
There weren’t any women on their team.
"You know..." the voice continued from somewhere above him. "You probably won’t live very long if you keep double-crossing your own people."
His grip around the pistol tightened, moving his pistol along his head.
"But thanks for saving us the trouble."
"Where are you?!" he shouted, turning in every direction.
"Up here."
His head snapped upward, but all he saw was a faint silver glint from one of the branches above. He raised his pistol, but it was too late.
TAK!
An arrow plunged straight into his chest. His body staggered backward, and the pistol slipped from his hand.
THUD!
Ashley remained perched on the thick branch above, watching the man collapse onto his back as blood bubbled from his mouth.
She lowered the crossbow in her hand. Then she pressed two fingers against her earpiece.
"North Four clear," she said quietly. "Surround the area before they notice."
At her command, figures dressed in black tactical gear began emerging from the darkness.
One after another, they moved silently through the woods, closing in, taking down everyone in their path as quietly as possible.
