HONK!

HONK!!!

Ashley nearly choked when she caught sight of the blinding light barreling closer and closer from her side.

Her lips parted as she cursed Rum with all her heart. She had told him to go all out, but nowhere in those instructions had she asked him to kill her!

"Fucking Rum," she hissed, keeping her eyes on the road. "I’m going to kill him."

Also, where the hell had he come from?

As far as everyone knew, Rum had been at the back, wreaking havoc on every car pursuing them.

"Lu," she called as the light beside her grew brighter, already planting her feet on the motorcycle’s seat.

Before she could say anything more, Lucian spoke.

"I’ll catch you."

HONK!!!

The blare of the truck’s horn grew louder as it hurtled straight toward her, accompanied by Rum’s curses exploding through their earpieces.

Lucian drew a deep breath, his gaze darting between Ashley and the cars flanking her. They weren’t slowing down either, and whatever plan they had to save themselves was none of his concern.

When his eyes returned to his wife, Ashley was already crouched on the seat, one hand still gripping the handlebar.

HONK!

The blaring horn was almost deafening.

But not as loud as Lucian’s shout.

"NOW!"

The instant he gave the signal, his foot slammed down on the accelerator.

At the same time, Ashley launched herself off the motorcycle and somersaulted through the air. Lucian kept his eyes on her while his mind remained fixed on the road, making rapid calculations in his head.

As for Gustav?

His jaw dropped, his eyes nearly bulging out of their sockets as he watched her soar through the air.

Everything seemed to slow down.

Ashley spun gracefully, her arms spread wide. She held a rifle in one hand and a pistol in the other. Both weapons flashed as she unleashed a barrage of bullets, finally gaining a clear shot at the cars that had been boxing her in.

Gustav was too stunned to speak.

Even those watching the drone footage Gin had broadcast across the city stopped whatever conversations they were having and whatever they were doing.

All they could do was watch Ashley leap from her motorcycle as the truck sped toward her, her body spinning backward through the air.

Marshal wasn’t spared from the horror either. He stared through the shattered rear windshield, able to glimpse everything through a narrow section of glass that remained intact. He gasped, his face draining of color.

"He’s... he’s insane," he blurted out.

His heart pounded so violently that he clutched his chest, trying to keep the pain at bay.

But the longer he watched the demon chasing him, the more he realized that whoever it was truly intended to capture him.

Had he known who was actually behind all this, his heart might have stopped before the chase even ended.

While the rest of the world seemed to move in slow motion, Lucian pressed several buttons on his side. The windows lowered slightly—just enough to give Ashley something to grab onto.

HONK!!!

Rum leaned his entire weight on the horn.

His truck plowed into the cars that had been boxing Ashley in, narrowly missing the riderless motorcycle as it began to lose speed. He continued across the road, ramming through the vehicles in the neighboring lane.

Gustav held his breath as the truck thundered past them.

They weren’t going to make it.

But before he could dwell on the thought, a deafening thud struck the roof of their vehicle.

BAM!

Gustav flinched and looked up, watching the metal buckle beneath Ashley’s weight. A second later, her fingers curled over the top of his window.

"What the—"

"Hold on!" Lucian shouted—not at Gustav, but at Ashley, whom he had successfully caught.

Her abandoned motorcycle suddenly veered into their path.

Lucian wrenched the steering wheel sideways, sending the car into a sharp drift to avoid crashing into the back of Rum’s truck. The side of their vehicle scraped against the truck, spraying sparks and smoke across the road.

Lucian ground his teeth as he fought against the steering wheel, holding his breath.

It lasted only a few seconds, but to him—and to Gustav, who had one hand wrapped around Ashley’s arm and the other clutching the grab handle to keep himself from being thrown into Lucian’s seat—it felt like several minutes.

The moment they cleared the truck, Lucian shifted gears and jerked the steering wheel in the opposite direction.

Their car spun several times across the road before he finally regained control and pointed it in the right direction.

He slammed down on the accelerator, rapidly closing the distance between them and Scott’s car.

As for Rum, his truck continued plowing through every vehicle that had been pressuring his boss, shoving them off the road before finally crashing into a massive tree.

With Rum clearing the enemies out of the way, the vehicles behind them regained their momentum and began dealing with the rest.

Still...

"Fucking Rum," Red hissed as he tore through the traffic, finally closing the gap between himself and Lucian’s car.

"I’m going to kill him," Khan growled from the helicopter.

"Fuck you!" Gin shouted furiously.

"I’m never working with him again," Nelek muttered, still caught up in the chase.

"I hope he’s dead," Vodka remarked.

Tank, who was riding with him, nodded in agreement.

Meanwhile, the hero of tonight’s chase let out a groan.

Rum peeled himself away from the deployed airbag, several shards of glass embedded in his skin.

"Ugh," he groaned. "Am I in heaven?"

He held his throbbing head. "I can hear the angels calling me from beyond the gates."

"FUCK OFF!" the angels in question shouted collectively through his earpiece. "Go into the fucking light, Rum! Nobody cares!"

"Hehe..." Rum laughed as he leaned back and raised a thumb toward the camera. "Rock and roll."

What he didn’t know was that while his colleagues wanted to kill him for nearly killing Ashley himself, the audience—and everyone who had bet money on him—erupted into applause.

"Well, he’s a winner in my book."

"That guy just saved everyone the trouble," another viewer commented with satisfaction. "He was worth losing money over."

"Man, this is insane."

"And it’s almost over." Another person pointed at the drone footage, since Lucian’s car wasn’t equipped with a camera. "Look over there."

Everyone shifted their attention back to the drone feed.

All they saw was Ashley ‌still clinging to the roof of Lucian’s car as the vehicle rapidly closed in on Scott.
