"MAYA! JACOB! ANYONE!" Christine’s cries were echoing inside the hall as she tried her hardest to climb the metallic shelves, but it wasn’t as easy as it looked...

The metal was tall and barely had any place to get a good grip on.

And when there’s a hungry, scary and dangerous zombie after you, you don’t really have the time to use your brain and think logically.

Maya, the woman from Max’s team, was staring at the sight in horror.

Her hands were extended, her pistol aimed in Dicken’s direction, but there was a problem...

Christine.

When Christine mindlessly rushed in Maya’s direction, she forgot that she was blocking the line of sight for Maya too...

Maya instantly circled around, trying to find a spot from where she could shoot safely without the risk of hitting Christine.

Dickens, who had started with running, was now barely limping. With every step, loud snapping sounds echoed from his body, merging with Christine’s pathetic whimpers as she grappled at the shelves.

When Dickens finally reached the shelf, Christine had managed to climb to the top. Huddling at the peak as she screamed and quivered in fear.

He looked around, but every other piece of food was out of reach... behind the metal cage...

The metal cage...

It had to go. The cage was in the way.

"Hun... gry... food... please..." Dickens whispered clawing at his own hair, ripping several strands out along with his own skin as he stared at Christine, eyes bloodshot.

He couldn’t care less about his own injuries.

"Chi... cken... don’...t run."

That was the last thing he could speak, as he heard a loud *BANG* resounding throughout the storage room.

Smell came first. The scent of gunpowder.

And then came the impact as Dickens stumbled several steps backwards, nearly tipping over but managing to keep his balance.

A bullet had just blown off his ear cleanly, narrowly dodging his head as he had wobbled at the perfect time.

To him, the woman with gun didn’t look like a normal human... she looked like a big bad wolf that was trying to take away his chicken.

That wanted him to die hungry.

He roared like a madman, and contrary to everyone’s expectation, he ran directly into the shelf that Christine was hiding on top off.

It was common knowledge that zombies gain slightly enhanced physical strength when compared to normal humans in exchange for the intelligence.

And that fact was well demonstrated by Dickens as with a full charged manic push, he sent the entire shelf tumbling down...

People panicked, running away as Maya once again lost her line of target... Now a shelf was in between her and Dickens!

Christine was on the shelf when Dickens ruthlessly bulldozed into it and sent it flying down.

Her body ached from within... internal bleeding, at the very least.

But right now she doesn’t care about pain at all.

She began crawling away, shrieking and screaming for help but not a single person came forward...

Humans were selfish and Dickens didn’t appear like a normal zombie by any means. Even Jacob didn’t dare fight that beast head on, and no one blamed him for it.

Dickens stumbled in haste, a wide, creepy grin stretched playing on his lips as he stared at the piece of chicken that had fallen to the floor, and was now inching backwards.

But he knew. He knew that the chicken was too slow and it couldn’t escape.

Maya once again repositioned, aiming at Dickens, but this time, Dickens wasn’t easily blindsided by the wolf. He wouldn’t let the wolf steal his chicken.

He turned his back to the wolf, hanging his head low as he continued moving towards the chicken, smiling creepily all the way.

*BANG* *BANG* BANG*

One bullet shot past his head, ruffling what remained of his hair.

The second pierced his shoulder, forcing him to stumble forwards, acting more like a boost for him rather than any help for Christine.

The third was even worse. It actually shot into his cheek and came out of the other cheek, creating a gorey window to look into the inner workings of Dicken’s mouth.

Blood flowed down his body but he felt no pain as he had finally caught up to the chicken...

It squawked, resisting as he grabbed its neck and leaned down, blood dripping onto the chicken’s face from the open ’pores’ on his cheek.

And then... the world stilled for Dickens. He sunk his teeth into the tender flesh, tearing it off as he ignored the wolf, the other foods, and focused solely on the meal he had.

One bite at a time, the clucking stopped, and so did the resistance...

For what felt like a century, no one disturbed Dickens in his meal. He felt the morsels sliding down his food pipe, but no matter how much he devoured, the hunger never settled down.

The chicken wasn’t enough.

He wanted the taco, the cheeseburger... and even the wolf.

He tried standing back up from his dining table, but before he could look for more food, suddenly everything went blank.

***

Jacob was standing above Dickens, a metallic pipe in his hand that was now stained with blood and crooked with a heavy dent.

He didn’t stop there though.

Jacob grunted, clenching his teeth as he slammed the pipe harder onto Dickens’s skull, smashing through the hardened bone as the pipe bent further.

Brain matter and blood once again stained the white tiles. The mood was somber, and everyone kept staring at the heavily breathing, cowboy hatted man and the two corpses by his feet...

Rhea hugged Andrea so tightly that her knuckles turned white and her face was buried completely in her older sister’s chest.

Naomi sniffled, turning away from the sight as she took shaky breaths to keep herself calm.

Maya had fallen to her knees, her pistol clattering on the floor as she stared at the corpses with a deadpan, blank and horrified look.

She felt like she had failed not only as a protector, but also as a human being.

While Jacob felt... empty.

He wanted to be happy, but he didn’t feel any sort of joy from doing what he did.

’It needed to be done... now just two more requirements left for Max.’

A/N: I don’t know if it is dark for you wn peeps, but I felt weird writing about it honestly. Maybe it was my fault that i vividly imagined the scene and Dicken’s fucked up mind, but anyways. This novel wasn’t meant to be dark... though, I am curious about y’all s thoughts.
