My Skills Can Evolve Infinitely in a Game-Like World

A squad of goblins was wandering through the wilderness, their mouths and nails covered in chunks of flesh and dripping with fresh blood.

Their growling spread throughout the surroundings. They moved like a team of mindless zombies looking for their next victim.

Suddenly, a silver light whistled through the air, reflecting the color of the moon above.

Before any of the monsters could react, it reached one of them.

Its green skin was easily pierced.

The silver light remained embedded in its skull, revealing its true identity. A dagger.

Its companions fared no better.

Plants grew out of the desolate earth and bound around their lower limbs.

Then, blades of wind materialized, slashing across their throats in a neat move.

A torrent of notifications flooded Aurelius’ vision.

He paid little attention, though.

His gaze settled on the figure leaning beside the corpses and picking up her weapon.

"Didn’t we say that we wouldn’t hunt any goblins no matter what?" Aurelius complained.

"We haven’t even reached our destination yet, and you’ve already broken your promise," he rubbed his forehead helplessly.

Selene did not respond. She glanced at the blood of the goblins’ recent victims not far away, and a trace of hatred flashed across her eyes.

She quickly concealed it.

"Why are you so angry? Does it matter whether we kill a bunch of weaklings? It’s not like anyone will find out." She glanced at Aurelius with an expression that screamed, "Don’t tell me what to do."

Without giving him any time to follow up, she abruptly changed the subject.

"Say... We’ve already fought together once in the Sunless Sect’s stronghold. Plus, no one can see us in this wasteland."

"Why are you still wearing a mask? Could it be that you want to hide your identity from me?"

Aurelius choked at these words.

He had originally intended to teach this woman a lesson. But seeing the curious look on her face, he wisely chose to shut his mouth.

Ignoring the question, he conjured a wave of flames that burned the goblin corpses.

Then, he raised his head to look at the shadowy forest as though nothing had happened.

His expression grew heavier as the outline of towering trees was reflected in his eyes.

Especially when he noticed the absolute silence in the surroundings and the faint freezing temperature, he felt that something was wrong.

"Are you sure doing this is safe?" he couldn’t help but ask.

Selene smiled. She cleaned her bloody silver while rising to her feet.

"As I’ve said before, you’re overly cautious," she shook her head, clicking her tongue with some disdain.

"Although being careful is good, you sometimes have to take a gamble."

"Opportunities don’t come at all times. Once you miss them, they will be gone forever."

Her tone was teasing, as though mocking Aurelius for his overly cautious nature.

But at the same time, her words seemed like the advice a person would give to their good friend.

"Nothing in this world comes for free. If you want to make progress, you will inevitably face danger."

"Rather than waiting until later and scrambling for a chance to survive, it’s better to do so now, while the stakes are relatively low."

"Who knows?" She chuckled. "The gamble might very well pay off."

Having said that, she no longer looked at Aurelius. Raising her head and following his eyes, she looked toward the forest.

Dark shadows emerged from beneath her. They wove around her figure into a shadowy suit, making it particularly difficult to detect her in the middle of the night.

Then, without any hesitation, she dove into the forest head-on.

Throughout the process, she didn’t spare Aurelius a glance, much less ask for his opinion. It was as though she would do so even if he didn’t follow her steps.

Watching her departing back, Aurelius hesitated.

Rationally, he knew that going any further was dangerous. He didn’t believe Selene’s explanation that the Goblin Mountains were empty and there was no danger.

But emotionally...

Selene’s words echoed in his mind.

He knew she was right.

Due to his past life memories, Aurelius was used to being cautious when dealing with things. Even when he decided to risk his life, it would only be after he had exhausted all his other options.

With that thought, Aurelius no longer hesitated.

He chased after Selene.

Only a few steps later, the desolate plain had disappeared behind him.

Large trees surrounded him from every direction, accompanied by high bushes and lush vegetation.

The temperature decreased even further at a speed that could be felt.

Although it was in the middle of summer and the Dawn Kingdom was the hottest territory in Nova Roma, Aurelius still felt himself growing cold.

He didn’t mind, though. The upgraded Awakener’s Physique allowed him to withstand extraordinary temperatures.

After a brief pause, he looked around, hoping to locate Selene.

Given the surrounding darkness and her Class as an Assassin, doing so should have been impossible.

Yet...

The sound of teeth clattering immediately gave her position away. When Aurelius cautiously approached her, stepping over the wild bushes, he found Selene frozen. Like a statue.

Her face was full of horror, having lost its usual indifferent nature.

Her eyes were glued to the towering tree in front of her, her body trembling.

When Aurelius followed her gaze, he came face to face with the source of her terror.

His expression instantly changed.
