’Every time one of Lydia’s bodies gets close, she changes direction.’

The pixie’s movements weren’t random. She was avoiding the slimes.

"Do you think you’ve already beaten me?"

Liam raised his pistol.

"No."

He followed her movements with his eyes.

"I’m figuring out where you don’t want to go."

The pixie suddenly accelerated and flew straight toward Liam.

Liam didn’t fire.

The creature flew past him.

One of Lydia’s bodies moved behind her.

Another blocked the left.

Another blocked the right.

The pixie stopped abruptly.

For the first time, she had nowhere to escape.

Liam turned around, already aiming his pistol.

The pixie’s eyes widened.

"Wait..."

BANG!

The bullet struck her.

An explosion of light swept across the entire area, filling the space with confetti and sparkles.

The pixie stood motionless.

For a moment, she simply stared at Liam.

Then she smiled.

"Well played."

Her body began dissolving into blue and black particles.

Liam slowly lowered his pistol.

Lydia’s six bodies immediately returned to him.

They fused back together until only one remained.

The green gelatinous mass climbed back onto his shoulder.

[Lydia: We did it.]

Liam smiled.

"We did it, darling."

The pixie disappeared completely.

The walls around them began flickering.

The simulation’s environment started to dissolve.

Liam watched as the strange battlefield disappeared.

The translucent walls remained, but everything else returned to the testing area.

Then...

BEEP.

A message appeared on a screen in the area.

[Trial of Strength completed.]

Liam looked at it and smiled.

He gently patted the slime resting on his shoulder.

"Not bad for our first trial."

Lydia bounced happily.

[Lydia: I think we make a good team.]

Liam let out a small laugh.

"I think so too, darling."

Outside the testing area, several guild assistants watched them through the transparent walls.

And somewhere behind the dark windows overlooking the enormous hangar...

Five people had just watched everything that had happened.

The Trial of Strength had barely ended for them.

But Liam Davis had already demonstrated something none of them had expected.

He wasn’t the strongest Hunter in that room, nor did he have the most destructive Awakening.

But when it really mattered...

Liam left the testing area as the translucent walls slowly began to lower.

Behind him, one of the guild assistants was already letting the next applicant in. The young man looked quite nervous as he walked toward the center of the area, staring at the large case containing the sensors.

Liam barely paid attention to him.

He was still trying to process everything that had just happened.

Lydia remained on his shoulder in her small green slime form.

A few meters away, Emily was leaning against one of the hangar walls, watching them with a smile.

"Liam!"

Liam raised a hand.

"Are you done already?"

Emily gave him a thumbs-up.

"I finished a while ago."

Lydia descended from Liam’s shoulder, and her body began to expand.

The gelatinous mass slid down his arm, fell to the floor, and slowly regained its human form.

Lydia straightened up beside her husband and looked at Emily.

"How did we do on the trial?"

Emily shrugged.

"Normal."

Liam raised an eyebrow.

"Normal?"

"Yeah."

Emily watched them for a few seconds.

"Actually, I didn’t understand anything that happened with you two."

Liam and Lydia exchanged a glance.

"What do you mean?"

Liam asked.

Emily pointed toward the testing area.

"During my turn, I could see exactly what was happening. A creature appeared, and I had to fight it. But when you two went in..."

She paused.

"It was weird."

Liam frowned.

"Weird how?"

"I just saw things appearing inside those glass walls."

Emily began gesturing with her hands.

"First, a small butterfly appeared. Then it disappeared. Then an eagle appeared, some animals, and I don’t know what else."

Liam’s eyes widened slightly.

"And us?"

Emily looked at him in confusion.

"You were there."

"Doing what?"

"Nothing."

Liam froze completely.

Emily continued.

"I saw you standing inside the area. Sometimes you seemed to look in different directions, but you didn’t move much."

Lydia raised a hand.

"You didn’t see us fighting?"

Emily shook her head.

"No."

Liam felt a chill run down his spine.

"You didn’t see the wolf?"

"What wolf?"

"The black wolf."

Emily let out a small laugh.

"What black wolf?"

Lydia took a step toward her.

"You didn’t see it trying to attack us?"

Emily looked at her as if they were talking about something absurd.

"There was no wolf."

Liam felt his stomach drop.

Emily pointed toward the testing area again.

"The last thing I saw was the little butterfly exploding."

"A butterfly?"

"Yeah."

Emily frowned.

"After that, the entire area filled with confetti and sparkles. You two stayed still for a few seconds, and then everything disappeared."

Liam looked toward the transparent walls.

’’Then...’’

It hadn’t been a normal simulation.

Everything they had experienced...

No one else had seen it.

Lydia looked at Liam.

He didn’t need to ask what she was thinking.

They had both reached the same conclusion.

Then, a message appeared in front of Liam’s eyes.

[Pix: I’m finally getting signals from you!]

Liam blinked.

Another message appeared immediately.

[Pix: It looks like you had fallen under the pixie’s charm!]

Liam felt a knot form in his stomach.

[Pix: I warned you to be careful.]

Liam silently stared at the messages.

"Pix..."

Then another message appeared.

[Pix: Are you two okay?]

Liam took a deep breath.

"Yeah."

His eyes returned to the testing area.

The next applicant was inside.

An assistant was placing the sensors on his head, chest, and arms.

The young man looked nervous.

Liam, however, could barely take his eyes off the dark windows located high on the walls of the hangar.

’What did the sub-captains see?’

If Emily had seen one thing...

And they had experienced something completely different...

Then what had the people evaluating the applicants been watching?

Liam looked at Lydia.

She was also staring at the windows.
