The monster emerged from the sea of sand within seconds.

Its enormous jaw opened before them, and before Liam could even raise his pistol, its jaws snapped shut.

"Lydia!"

They both instinctively jumped back into the tree, but the giant beast’s fangs tore away a section of the enormous trunk.

The creature swallowed it along with everything that had been on top of it.

For a moment, there was nothing but darkness and the sound of something gigantic swallowing the tree.

The system continued emitting those Danger Sense warnings.

[DANGER.]

[DANGER.]

[DANGER.]

"This isn’t helping!"

Liam clung to one of the branches as the entire trunk descended down the creature’s throat.

The inside of the tree was hollow, which allowed them to see the outside.

What they saw left Liam completely frozen.

The monster’s throat surrounded them.

Massive walls of flesh contracted around the trunk, pushing it downward.

Lydia trembled, and her body began losing its human form.

Within seconds, she transformed back into the green gelatinous mass Liam knew so well.

"Lydia?"

He took her into his arms.

"Are you okay?"

The system chat appeared before his eyes.

[Lydia: I’m scared.]

[Lydia: That monster swallowed us like it was nothing. Tree and all.]

Liam gently stroked his wife’s gelatinous body.

"I know."

He looked upward. Although he could barely see anything through the branches, he knew they were already far away from the entrance.

"Don’t worry. I’ll figure out a way for us to get out of here."

[Lydia: Are you sure?]

Liam smiled.

"Of course."

A massive contraction shook the trunk.

"Well..."

His face paled.

"...I hope so."

The tree continued descending.

The creature slithered beneath the sea of sand, and every movement caused the trunk to tilt violently.

Liam felt as though he were constantly falling.

His stomach was beginning to churn.

"Lydia..."

[Lydia: Yes?]

"Can you stretch yourself toward one of the branches?"

[Lydia: I think so, honey.]

"I need to find somewhere we can stay still."

Lydia took a few seconds to respond.

[Lydia: Are you feeling like throwing up again?]

Liam wanted to laugh.

He really did.

But another violent jolt made his face turn even paler.

"Maybe..."

[Lydia: I knew this was going to happen!]

"Don’t laugh!"

Lydia began stretching.

Several green tendrils emerged from her body and extended through the inside of the trunk.

Her tendrils reached a branch and tightened around it.

Lydia began pulling, and Liam’s body was dragged along with her.

"Wait!"

The gelatinous mass slipped between the branches until they finally reached one of the thick branches that formed the staircase inside the tree.

Liam collapsed onto it and took a deep breath.

"Thanks, honey."

[Lydia: You’re really pale.]

"I’m fine."

[Lydia: Liam...]

"I’m fine."

[Lydia: If you need to throw up, do it.]

Liam closed his eyes.

"I’m not going to throw up."

His face said exactly the opposite.

Lydia returned to her small, round form and settled beside him.

Then Liam opened his eyes and looked at the inside of the creature.

The tree continued descending, deeper and deeper.

The trunk no longer seemed to simply be getting swallowed.

It was being dragged down.

"I’m sure..."

Liam swallowed.

"...this is the dungeon’s boss."

[Lydia: You think so?]

"Yes."

He looked at the enormous throat.

"It’s too big. Too strong. And it was hiding beneath the sea of sand."

Lydia remained silent.

Then another message appeared.

[Lydia: The hunters who were outside must have been fighting it for hours.]

Liam nodded.

He had seen their faces.

The wounded.

The exhausted.

Those who could barely remain standing.

"Yeah."

He looked upward.

"They could barely stand."

Another tremor.

CRAAACK.

Liam raised his head and noticed a crack appearing in the trunk.

"That’s not good."

The entire tree began to splinter.

The branches creaked, and pieces of bark broke away.

Lydia stretched herself and wrapped part of her body around Liam to keep him secure.

"Lydia!"

[Lydia: I’m not going to let you fall!]

The trunk shifted violently.

Then Liam saw something.

Through a crack.

A flash.

An impact coming from outside.

BOOM!

The creature was struck.

Its throat contracted, and the tree was crushed for an instant.

Liam understood what was happening.

"They’re attacking."

[Lydia: The hunters?]

"Yes."

Another impact.

Then another.

The creature roared, and the sound traveled through the entire tree.

But those attacks were also causing the trunk to move violently inside its throat.

And that wasn’t even the worst part.

Liam looked downward.

The space around the tree was beginning to shrink.

The throat was closing.

"We have a problem."

[Lydia: What is it?]

"It’s squeezing us."

The fleshy walls began compressing the trunk.

Branches snapped, and one fell into the depths below.

Liam held tightly onto Lydia.

"We have to get out."

[Lydia: How?]

Liam looked around, but there was no way out.

The tree continued descending.

And then he heard something.

Fssssssss...

Liam frowned.

"What is that?"

The sound came again.

Fssssss...

Lydia heard it too.

[Lydia: Liam...]

They both looked downward and noticed that the base of the trunk was beginning to disappear.

It wasn’t breaking.

It wasn’t burning either.

It was dissolving.

The creature’s stomach acid had begun consuming the wood.

"Oh."

Liam took a deep breath.

"That’s really bad."

An unbearable smell began filling the interior.

Liam covered his mouth.

"Ugh..."

His eyes began watering.

[Lydia: Are you okay?]

"Yes."

[Lydia: You don’t look okay.]

"I’m..."

Liam swallowed.

"...perfectly fine."

Another piece of the trunk fell.

The acid was slowly rising.

It was getting closer.

Lydia began moving nervously.

[Lydia: Tell me what we should do, honey.]

Liam didn’t answer.

[Lydia: Liam.]

He looked down and then up.

He studied the throat.

The tree.

The branches.

The acid.

The attacks coming from outside.

He tried to think, but the smell was unbearable.

His head began spinning.

"There has to be..."

He closed his eyes.

"...a way."

[Lydia: What way?]

Liam smiled.

Barely.

"I’m thinking."

His voice was becoming weaker.

The base of the tree continued melting.

The creature shook again, and the trunk creaked.

Lydia completely wrapped herself around her husband’s body.

[Lydia: Liam!]

He barely opened his eyes.

"I’m fine..."

[Lydia: You’re not fine!]

"Let me..."

Another tremor.

Liam closed his eyes, and his head slowly fell to one side.

Lydia froze.

[Lydia: Liam...]

There was no response.

The acid continued rising.

The tree continued being dragged into the depths.

And as the enormous monster’s body twisted beneath the sea of sand, Liam remained with his eyes closed, desperately trying to find a solution before it was too late.
