My Slime Wife: Training and Pampering Her Makes Me Stronger
Chapter 76: Your Dinner Is Getting ColdLiam walked out of the bathroom alongside Lydia, both of them wrapped in robes while steam still escaped through the half-open door.
His hair was still damp, and a few drops of water ran down his neck. Liam finished tying his robe around his waist and took a deep breath.
The smell coming from the kitchen made his expression relax.
"Smells delicious..."
Lydia, who was standing behind him, smiled and wrapped her arms around him from behind.
"Always nice to hear that."
Liam placed his hands over his wife’s and closed his eyes for a few seconds.
After everything that had happened over the past month, being able to stay home and simply relax was his favorite part of the day.
One of Lydia’s copies was in the kitchen, finishing up dinner.
On the table was a huge meatloaf stuffed with mashed potatoes, still giving off steam.
"Dinner is ready!"
Liam smiled.
"We’re coming."
Lydia’s copy placed the plates on the table, and shortly after, her body began to change.
The small gelatinous mass slid across the floor until it reached Lydia.
Then, the small slime copy merged with her.
Lydia became whole again.
"Now that’s better. I didn’t want my other self to miss dinner."
Liam sat across from her.
For a few seconds, they ate in silence.
The sound of silverware against the plates was practically the only thing that could be heard in the apartment.
But it didn’t take long for Lydia to notice that her husband was quieter than usual.
She placed her fork down on her plate.
"Darling. What’s on your mind?"
Liam stopped and looked at his food.
"Is it that obvious?"
"A little."
Liam let out a sigh.
"I’ve had a lot on my mind lately."
Lydia watched him carefully.
"The squad selection?"
"Mostly."
Liam took another bite before continuing.
"It’s pretty obvious, I guess. It’s only a few days away, and I still have no idea what’s going to happen."
Lydia nodded.
"After everything that happened in the S-rank Dungeon, I thought we’d have more opportunities to participate in major raids. But this past month, we’ve only been going into low-rank Dungeons."
Liam put his fork down.
"And that makes me think that maybe no one is going to choose us."
"Why do you think that?"
"Because we haven’t had another opportunity like that."
Liam remembered the fight against the enormous worm.
The sub-captains.
The core.
The way he had ended up firing that bullet.
"The S-rank Dungeon was something extraordinary. I don’t know if the other hunters really consider us after that. Maybe, to them, we’re just two rookies who got lucky."
Lydia frowned slightly.
"You shouldn’t try to climb the ranks so quickly in this new life as a hunter."
Liam looked up.
"Huh?"
"We’ve only been doing this for a month."
Lydia picked up her fork again.
"You don’t have to put so much pressure on yourself."
Liam let out a small laugh.
"You’re right."
He lowered his gaze.
"But I have certain goals in mind."
Lydia smiled.
"I know. Thanks to this job, we were able to pay off all our debts. We even improved our lifestyle quite a bit."
Liam looked around the apartment.
They no longer had to constantly worry about whether they could afford food for the next day.
They could buy new clothes.
They could afford to eat out every once in a while.
They had even managed to pay off all their debts.
Liam stared at one of the pieces of furniture in the apartment.
"But there are other things I want to achieve."
Lydia tilted her head.
"Like what?"
Liam remained silent as his eyes slowly traveled around the apartment.
He thought about the rent, the repairs, and inevitably, one person.
Mr. Banks, their landlord.
’I want to buy this apartment.’
He didn’t want to depend on that man again.
He didn’t want to receive messages from him over every little problem.
He didn’t want to keep feeling like, even though their financial situation had improved, there was still someone who could decide whether they could continue living there.
Lydia watched him for a few seconds.
Then she smiled.
"I think I know what’s on your mind."
Liam blinked.
’Did I activate Call by accident?’
His Tamer ability allowed him to communicate with Lydia through his thoughts.
But if she had read what he was thinking...
Liam swallowed.
"What do you think I’m thinking about?"
Lydia smiled even wider, placed a hand over her stomach, and began to laugh.
"Maybe you want to grow the family."
Liam froze completely.
"..."
Lydia burst out laughing.
"Your face!"
Liam started laughing as well.
"Wait! You know I’ve always dreamed of becoming a father."
Lydia knew. They had talked about it many times.
But for years, it had been a dream that seemed far too distant.
When they could barely afford their basic expenses, having a child was practically impossible to consider.
"We were in such a bad financial situation that we could barely even think about it."
Lydia smiled.
"I know."
"You knew?"
"Yes."
"Then why did you ask?"
"I wanted to hear you say it."
Liam shook his head while laughing.
"You’re terrible."
Lydia shrugged.
"Now we’re not in such a bad financial situation that we couldn’t support a child."
Liam became thoughtful.
"That’s true."
He looked at his plate.
"But I don’t want our future child to depend on the hunter lifestyle we have."
Lydia nodded.
"I understand."
"First, we should invest in some other source of income."
Liam began listing his thoughts.
"Something that would allow us to have money even if we stopped entering Dungeons. And we’d need to find a trustworthy nanny. Someone who could take care of them while we’re working."
Lydia sighed.
"Yeah. Having a child when we’re both hunters would be difficult."
"Exactly."
Liam looked at his food again.
"That’s why I’m thinking we should secure a good income first."
Lydia raised an eyebrow.
"If we manage to get into a squad, we’d probably have better opportunities."
Liam paused.
"And if we don’t..."
Lydia already knew what he was going to say.
"Ouroboros."
Liam nodded.
"If the amount they offer is good, it could be an option."
Lydia let out a sigh.
"It’s not good for you to have so many things on your mind."
"No?"
"No."
Lydia pointed her fork at Liam.
"Right now, we should focus on getting my next evolution and doing our best during the squad selection."
Liam smiled.
"I suppose you’re right."
"After that, we’ll have time to think and see what Ouroboros has to offer."
Liam nodded.
"You’re right."
Lydia pointed at his plate again.
"Besides..."
Liam looked at the meatloaf.
"Yes?"
"Your food is getting cold."
Liam looked at his plate, then at Lydia, and began to laugh.
"You’re right. Sorry, darling."
He picked up his fork again and resumed his dinner.
For a few moments, he decided to stop thinking about Ouroboros.
About the Ace of Spades.
About Mr. Banks.
About money.
Even about the future.
The selection would be in two days.
Until then, there wasn’t much he could do.
Lydia reached across the table and took his hand.
"No matter what happens, we’ll be together."
Liam looked up and smiled.
"I know."
Lydia intertwined her fingers with his.
"So stop worrying so much."
Liam let out a small laugh.
"I’ll try."
’Maybe she’s right.’
’I can’t control what will happen during the selection.’
’I don’t even know which squads will be interested in us.’
Liam took another bite.
’So, for now, I should stop questioning so many things.’
He looked at Lydia.
She was smiling as she finished her meal.
’Whatever happens, happens.’
Liam decided to stop thinking about the future.
For now, he just wanted to enjoy dinner with his wife.
