Liam and Lydia left the Ace of Spades Guild headquarters as the sun slowly began to set over the city.

They walked side by side, still wearing their hunter gear.

Liam carried his bag with some of his weapons inside, while Lydia walked calmly beside him.

"So, tomorrow is the conference, right?"

"Yeah."

Liam pulled out his phone and checked the calendar.

"They’re officially going to explain how the Squad Selection will work."

Lydia nodded.

"That means today is our last day."

Liam looked at her.

"For what?"

"For me to reach my next evolution."

Liam smiled.

"Exactly."

Lydia had reached Level Fifty-Nine after everything they had done over the past month.

She had consumed monsters, materials, and various items they had found inside the dungeons they had explored.

But leveling up had become much slower.

And she still needed to reach the next level to discover what would happen with her next evolution.

"I’m going to ask the group."

Liam opened the hunter app and entered the chat they shared with Eve, Harper, Lucas, and Steve.

He quickly typed.

"Is anyone available for a raid today?"

It didn’t take long for the replies to arrive.

The first was from Eve.

"[Eve: I can’t today. I’m visiting my mother. I left the city this morning.]"

Liam sighed.

Then Harper’s message appeared.

"[Harper: I’m really sorry, Liam. I’m way behind on my college exams. If I don’t study today, I’m screwed.]"

Liam smiled.

"[Liam: Don’t worry about it. Good luck with your exams.]"

Then the messages from Lucas and Steve appeared.

"[Lucas: Impossible today, boss. I’ve got some business to take care of with my guild.]"

"[Steve: Same here. I have to take care of a few things before tomorrow.]"

Liam let out another sigh.

"We’re on our own."

Lydia shrugged.

"We can find someone on the app."

"Yeah."

Liam began opening the app to search for available hunters.

But before he could, a familiar voice came from behind them.

"Liam! Lydia!"

They both turned around.

Emily Green was coming down the stairs of the guild headquarters.

The muscular woman was wearing fairly tight athletic clothes, her gray hair tied back, and a smile on her face.

"What a coincidence running into you!"

"Hey, Emily."

Lydia raised a hand.

"Are you done for the day?"

Emily finished coming down the stairs and approached them.

"I was actually going to ask you the same thing."

Then she looked at Liam’s phone.

"Are you guys doing something?"

Lydia smiled.

"We want to explore a dungeon in the area."

"To train?"

"And to prepare for the selection."

Emily’s eyes seemed to light up.

"I like that attitude."

Liam could immediately tell that the woman was getting excited.

"If you don’t mind..."

Emily pointed to herself.

"I can join you."

Lydia smiled.

"That would be great."

Liam nodded.

"The hunters we usually work with are busy today."

Emily pulled out her phone.

"Then there are three of us."

Liam thought for a few seconds.

Although James had made it clear that the selection shouldn’t be considered simply a competition, it still made sense to learn about the abilities of other hunters who would also be participating.

’After all, we’re going to have to work with other people.’

He looked at Emily.

"Welcome to the group."

Emily smiled broadly.

"Perfect!"

"Do you know anyone else who could come with us?"

"Of course."

Emily began searching for something on her phone.

"I know just the person."

Liam raised an eyebrow.

"Who?"

"You’ll see."

Emily sent a message and put her phone away.

Liam pulled his own phone out again.

"Then I’ll order a car."

"No need."

Emily walked toward the exit.

"I’ll drive you."

Liam looked at Lydia, who simply smiled.

"I think she already has everything planned out."

About forty minutes later, Liam and Lydia stepped out of a black sports car.

An enormous open field stretched out in front of them.

There were no buildings nearby, only a few back roads and large stretches of empty land.

Several yards away stood a gigantic tower.

The Dungeon.

According to the records in the app, it was a D-Rank Dungeon.

Emily stepped out of the vehicle and closed the door.

She was wearing her hunter armor and a fairly tight leather suit that emphasized her muscular build.

She began stretching her arms and legs.

Lydia looked at the tower.

Then she looked at Emily.

"Is the person you called coming?"

Emily rolled her shoulders.

"Chuck."

"Chuck?"

"Yeah."

Emily sighed.

"He’s always late."

Liam raised an eyebrow.

Emily smiled.

"But he’s great company."

Lydia moved slightly closer to Liam, but didn’t say anything out loud.

Instead, the system chat appeared in front of Liam’s eyes.

[Lydia: Honey, are you sure we can enter a D-Rank Dungeon with only four hunters?]

Liam looked at her.

[Lydia: We barely know Emily. We don’t even know what kind of Awakening she has.]

Liam smiled.

[Lydia: And we don’t know this Chuck at all.]

Liam used [Call].

’Relax.’

Lydia looked up.

’If Emily recommended this Dungeon, there must be a reason.’

Liam looked at the tower again.

’Besides, we need you to reach Level Sixty.’

Lydia replied through the chat.

[Lydia: I know.]

[Lydia: But I don’t want anything to happen to you.]

Liam smiled.

’Nothing’s going to happen. Don’t worry, honey.’

Although, in reality, Liam wasn’t completely sure either.

A D-Rank Dungeon shouldn’t pose too much of a threat to hunters of a certain level.

But there were only four Emerald-Rank hunters.

And one of them was someone they didn’t know yet.

Liam watched Emily.

The woman continued stretching as if she were about to begin a normal training session.

At least, he hoped so.

His priority was Lydia.

If he could get her to Level Sixty before the selection, they could discover what new evolution awaited her.

And Liam wanted to see it.

After all, every time Lydia evolved, her capabilities increased considerably.

Lydia looked at the tower again.

"How much longer until Chuck gets here?"

Emily checked her phone.

"He should be here..."

"Now."

Liam heard the sound of an engine.

He turned around.

A black Impala appeared on the back road and drove directly toward them.

The vehicle slowly approached the group before stopping behind them.

Emily stopped stretching, and her smile grew even wider.

"There he is."

Liam watched the car.

The driver’s door began to open.

Emily crossed her arms.

"About time Chuck showed up!"

Liam and Lydia looked at each other.

And they both had the exact same thought.
