My Sniper System in a Zombie Apocalypse World
Chapter 169: The Breach WidensChapter 169: Chapter 169: The Breach Widens
TATATATATATATA!
The roar of Gatling guns continued across the battlefield, mixing with the endless gunfire and explosions shaking the western side. From the rooftop, Jaxon settled into position and looked through his scope, calmly searching for targets among the chaos.
"Fall back! Regroup behind the barricades!"
Soldiers scrambled to reorganize their positions as Crawlers moved among them. The creatures were too fast to properly track at such close range. They constantly leaped between walls, rooftops, and defensive positions, attacking from one direction before disappearing into another.
Worse, they seemed to understand the danger of the soldiers’ weapons. Instead of staying out in the open, the Crawlers deliberately moved close to groups of soldiers, using the chaos around them as cover. Every time someone tried to aim, there was a chance another soldier would cross into their line of fire.
"Movement above!"
"Crawler behind you!"
Soldiers quickly turned, trying to cover one another. One of the Crawlers slipped behind a soldier and lunged toward his back before anyone could stop it.
BAM! Before the Crawler could reach him, its body suddenly burst apart in midair. Blood and pieces of flesh splattered across the nearby soldiers as the remains crashed onto the ground.
For a moment, they stared at the remains in shock.
"Was that a sniper?"
"What kind of bullet does that?"
"Forget it! Hold your positions!" an officer shouted, snapping them back to attention. "We still have infected on the wall!"
The soldiers immediately turned back toward the battle. Then movement flashed behind them.
"Crawlers to the rear!"
Two more Crawlers appeared between the nearby buildings, moving quickly from one position to another.
"Focus fire!"
Several soldiers opened fire. Bullets followed the Crawlers across the street, but most struck nothing but concrete as the creatures jumped aside before the soldiers could properly track them.
One Crawler suddenly changed direction. It slipped through the soldiers’ line and lunged toward one of them.
"Behind you!"
The soldier barely managed to turn before the Crawler grabbed him and pulled him away.
"AHHHH!" His rifle slipped from his hands as he desperately tried to grab onto anything nearby. "HELP ME!"
Several soldiers turned their weapons toward him, but the Crawler kept the man between itself and their rifles as it quickly dragged him into the darkness.
"Man down!"
The second Crawler immediately changed direction and lunged toward another soldier.
"Cole, move!"
The soldier turned, but the Crawler was already rushing toward him. But before it could reach him, another shot tore through the air.
BAM!
The Crawler’s head exploded. The round tore through its body with such force that it nearly split the creature apart before its remains crashed onto the ground.
"What the..."
Cole stared at the corpse, stunned. Several soldiers around him did the same, but none of them could tell where the shot had come from.
Not far from them, Jaxon remained calm as he shifted his DMR toward another target.
Similar shots soon rang out across the western wall. Crawlers attacking isolated soldiers suddenly dropped one after another, their heads bursting before they could reach their targets. Na-rin and Natasha joined in, picking off any Crawlers that Jaxon didn’t immediately target.
The soldiers below were confused by the sudden support, but they quickly took advantage of it.
"Crawlers are going down! Reform the line!"
"Back to your positions! Push them off the wall!"
With fewer Crawlers attacking from behind, the soldiers quickly began reorganizing. Groups that had been scattered moments earlier formed up again, turning their attention back toward the infected pouring over the wall. But the Crawlers had only been part of the problem.
Thousands of infected had already climbed over the western wall, pouring into the safe zone faster than the defenders could stop them.
Mounted guns tore through the infected gathering along the top, while soldiers desperately fired into anything that managed to cross.
Then a louder alarm suddenly echoed throughout the western sector.
"Warning. Western wall breached. Containment has failed. All personnel, proceed with emergency defense procedures."
Isabel briefly stopped firing as unease spread across her face. "Jaxon..."
Jaxon fired another shot, dropping an infected that had nearly reached a soldier. "We stay here. Don’t move from this rooftop. Focus on anything coming over the wall."
Isabel hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Alright."
She raised her M16 again. Beside her, Cindy continued firing at the infected climbing over the wall, while Natasha and Na-rin searched the battlefield for Crawlers moving among the soldiers.
On the wall, the remaining soldiers were becoming increasingly desperate.
"Those piles are still growing!"
"Grenade teams, target the base! Bring those piles down!"
Several soldiers immediately pulled out grenades and threw them over the edge.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOOOM!
The explosions tore through the piles gathered below the wall, sending limbs and bodies flying in every direction. Several large sections collapsed under the blasts, causing dozens of infected to tumble back to the ground. But it only slowed them down. The infected behind continued pushing forward, climbing over the remains of the fallen as they tried to rebuild the piles.
As the soldiers desperately held the top of the wall, reinforcements finally began pouring into the western sector.
Dozens of soldiers rushed through the streets and quickly spread toward the defensive positions.
"Incendiary teams, forward!"
Several soldiers carrying heavy fuel tanks moved into position near the wall.
"Targets below! Get ready!"
The soldiers raised their weapons and aimed down toward the massive groups of infected gathering at the base.
"Fire!"
FWOOOOOSH!
Streams of flame poured over the edge of the wall. Fire spread through the infected below, quickly turning entire sections of the horde into a burning mass. The creatures screamed and thrashed wildly as flames covered their bodies, but even then, many refused to stop.
Burning infected continued climbing over one another. Some made it several meters up the piles before finally collapsing, spreading the flames to the bodies around them.
Within moments, thick smoke began rising along the western wall, while the horrible smell of burning and rotting flesh filled the air.
"Reinforcements moving in! Clear the road!"
More soldiers rushed toward the western wall as armored vehicles followed behind them. The vehicles pushed through the streets toward the breach, their mounted guns turning toward the infected that had already made it inside.
Heavy rounds tore through the streets as armored vehicles rammed straight into groups of infected, crushing them beneath their wheels while soldiers followed behind, firing at anything that survived.
Above them, helicopters circled the battlefield, their searchlights sweeping across the western sector as gunners provided support from the air. Explosions rang across the battlefield one after another as the western defense slowly began to reorganize.
The noise had become almost unbearable. Gunfire, explosions, screams, and the roars of countless infected blended together until it was nearly impossible to hear anything else.
But the breach was not the only threat the military had to deal with. Among the massive horde outside the walls, several Variants reached down and grabbed chunks of broken concrete and massive rocks from the ground. Then they hurled them toward the helicopters above.
"INCOMING! BREAK RIGHT!"
One pilot immediately pulled away as a massive rock flew past the helicopter, missing the spinning blades by only a few meters.
But another helicopter was not as lucky. BOOM!
A chunk of concrete slammed directly into its side. The entire aircraft lurched violently from the impact as pieces of metal flew from its body. Smoke immediately began pouring from the damaged section while the helicopter struggled to remain in the air.
"Losing control!"
"Pull up! PULL UP!"
The pilot desperately fought with the controls, but the aircraft continued spinning as it rapidly lost altitude. Within seconds, it disappeared behind the wall.
BOOOOM! A distant explosion followed from somewhere inside the safe zone.
On the rooftop, Jaxon and the ladies continued holding their position. Surrounded by the deafening battle, they could barely hear one another, but there was no need to speak. They covered the area around the building, killing any infected that came too close while continuing to support the soldiers near the wall.
Na-rin briefly lowered her pistol and looked toward Jaxon. When she caught his attention, she pointed toward the western wall, then gestured forward, silently asking if they should move closer.
Jaxon shook his head and signaled for her to hold position. Na-rin nodded and immediately returned her attention to the battlefield.
Jaxon continued firing. Crawlers, infected on the wall, and those that had already breached the defenses fell one after another under his shots. System notifications continued ringing in his ears, but he ignored them. His only focus was killing as many infected as possible.
Despite the chaos around him, fighting like this was still far better than the battles he had faced before. This time, he wasn’t alone.
Hundreds of soldiers were fighting alongside him. Helicopters provided support from above, armored vehicles pushed through the infected below, and mounted guns continued tearing through the horde outside the walls.
Then another sound rose above the battlefield. BAM! BAM! BAM!
The rooftop trembled beneath them, making Jaxon pause for a moment.
BAM! Another heavy impact followed.
The ground had already been shaking from explosions and the endless horde, but this was different. Each impact came with a slow, heavy rhythm, almost like the footsteps of something enormous approaching.
BAM! BAM! BAM! The shaking grew stronger.
Jaxon lowered his DMR slightly and turned toward the forest. Then, several massive shadows began moving between the trees.
Soldiers stationed along the wall quickly noticed them as well.
"Large contacts at the tree line!"
"Searchlights, get on them!" Several searchlights immediately shifted away from the horde and swept across the forest.
Three enormous figures stepped out from between the trees, growing larger as they entered the light. Each creature stood nearly as large as an elephant, their bodies covered in thick muscle and hardened flesh. Their arms were massive, hanging heavily beside them.
