Chapter 191: Chapter 191: The Evacuation Begins

THUD. The entire building shook slightly, making the windows rattle in their frames.

Hannah tightened her grip on her weapon. "What do we do now? Should we evacuate too?"

Elaine didn’t answer right away. Her eyes remained fixed on the streets below as she watched another group of civilians hurry toward the evacuation point.

Part of her wanted to leave while there was still a chance. With Sumiko, the twins, Hannah, and Hae-in here, staying behind felt increasingly dangerous. But another part of her refused to leave without Jaxon and the rest of their group.

She lowered her gaze, her fingers tightening around her weapon. ’What if they come back and we’re already gone?’

Before she could make a decision, a terrified scream suddenly tore through the streets.

"AHHHHH!"

Elaine’s head snapped toward the window.

A man carrying a bag was running toward the evacuation area when a dark figure suddenly launched itself from a nearby building.

The Grasshopper Infected slammed into him, knocking him violently onto the pavement. His scream was cut short as the creature’s claws tore into his body.

Panic immediately spread through the crowd.

"The infected are here!"

"Run!"

"Get out of the way!"

"Help me!"

More Grasshopper Infected began leaping across the streets, landing on vehicles and rooftops before launching themselves toward the fleeing civilians. Their powerful legs sent them flying across entire sections of the street, allowing them to close the distance in seconds.

A military truck suddenly roared into the street and skidded to a stop.

"Block them!" a soldier shouted as he jumped from the back. "Don’t let them reach the evacuation area!"

The soldiers immediately opened fire.

TATATATATA! Several Grasshopper Infected were shot out of the air, their bodies tumbling across the pavement. But more creatures continued pouring from the surrounding streets, leaping over vehicles and scrambling across buildings.

"Protect the civilians!"

The soldiers fought desperately to hold the line, but the number of infected continued to increase. It was becoming obvious that they wouldn’t be able to keep them back for long.

Inside the residence, Elaine’s expression grew darker.

Suddenly... BAM! Something slammed against their front door.

Everyone froze. Then another impact followed, harder than the first.

The door rattled violently in its frame as the distant roars and screeches of infected grew louder outside.

Hannah’s face went pale. "They’re here..."

Before anyone could respond, a dark shape suddenly slammed against the reinforced window.

Hae-in and the twins screamed and stumbled backward. An infected clung to the outside of the window, its fingers scraping violently against the steel reinforcement. Its teeth snapped against the metal as it desperately tried to force its way inside.

"Get away from the window!" Elaine immediately raised both Uzis.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG! The bullets tore through the infected’s skull and chest. Its body jerked violently before finally sliding down the window, leaving a dark smear across the reinforced glass.

Everyone remained silent for a moment as Elaine slowly lowered her weapons and looked at the others. "We’re staying here."

Hannah stared at her. "But what about the evacuation?"

"Have you seen what’s happening outside?" Elaine glanced toward the window. "We won’t make it halfway there with those things running through the streets."

She tightened her grip on her Uzis before continuing, "We’ll lock everything down and stay together. Once Jaxon and the others return, we’ll decide what to do next."

Hannah hesitated before nodding. "Okay."

Elaine looked back toward the window, her expression softening for just a moment. ’Jaxon... hurry.’

Outside, another scream echoed through the residential sector, followed by a burst of gunfire.

The evacuation had descended into chaos. And with every passing second, the safe zone seemed to be falling apart around them.

’Fast. We have to reach them before it’s too late.’ Jaxon’s thoughts raced as they continued through the streets. The colossal infected was already moving deeper into the safe zone, and from what he had seen, there was almost nothing the soldiers could do against it. The only thing powerful enough to stop something that massive might be a bomb, but using one would mean destroying a large part of the safe zone along with it.

Above them, Grasshopper Infected leaped between rooftops, their powerful legs carrying them from building to building as they chased after the group.

Jaxon glanced back before turning to the others. "Stay close to me. Don’t move unless I move."

Cindy and Isabel nodded immediately. "Got it."

Jaxon quickly opened the System Store and purchased five smoke grenades. He pulled three from his Storage Space and handed one each to Natasha and Na-rin.

"When I give the signal, throw them as far apart as you can." Both women immediately understood what he was planning and nodded.

When they reached the next street corner, Jaxon slowed and looked ahead. Several infected were wandering through the streets while the Grasshoppers were already closing in from behind.

"Now!"

Natasha and Na-rin threw their grenades in opposite directions. Jaxon followed, tossing two more toward the front and behind them.

PSSSHHH! Thick smoke immediately spread across the streets, swallowing the surrounding buildings and turning the area into a white haze.

A Grasshopper infected launched itself from above and disappeared into the cloud, only to crash straight into the side of a building.

Another one followed, leaping into the cloud without slowing down, but it missed its target completely and vanished into the smoke.

"Move!" Jaxon ordered. He quickly led the group into the smoke, keeping his movements low and silent. Even with his vision obscured, his heightened senses allowed him to navigate through the streets, picking up the sounds of movement around them.

Behind them, the Grasshoppers continued leaping blindly through the smoke, their screeches echoing between the buildings.

Jaxon led the group around the back of a building and into a narrow alley. Suddenly, he raised a hand. "Hide, quickly hide."

Everyone immediately crouched behind the wall. And a sharp screech came from above.

THUD! A Grasshopper infected landed on the rooftop directly over them.

Everyone covered their mouths, afraid even the slightest sound would give them away. Above them, the creature slowly tilted its head, listening as its long limbs shifted against the concrete.

After a few tense seconds, the Grasshopper leaped away, disappearing back into the smoke.

Jaxon waited a few more seconds before lowering his hand. "Let’s go."

They continued through the alleys, moving quickly whenever the path was clear and slowing down whenever they detected infected nearby. Whenever one wandered too close, Jaxon silently took it down before it could make a sound.

They moved from one alley to another, cutting through narrow paths and slipping between buildings until the sounds of the pursuing Grasshoppers finally faded into the distance.
