Chapter 193: Chapter 193: The Evacuation Collapses

When they returned to the others, Elena immediately noticed Jannah and Hiromi. Despite her injured leg, she pushed herself forward, and the twins rushed toward her.

"Sister Elena!"

Elena opened her arms and pulled the twins into a hug, her expression softening with relief. "I’m so glad you’re both safe."

Nearby, Haris finally spotted Hannah. The moment he saw his only remaining family member unharmed, the tension in his face disappeared. He quickly pulled her into a hug before letting go and checking her from head to toe. "Are you hurt?"

Hannah shook her head. "I’m fine."

Haris let out a quiet breath of relief. "Good."

A short distance away, Isabel and Cindy took Sumiko from Jaxon while Bong-gu finally reunited with his teacher and classmates. For a brief moment, despite the chaos surrounding them, everyone was simply relieved to see the others still alive.

Once everyone had regrouped, Elaine turned toward Jaxon. "What do we do now? The infected are probably already attacking the evacuation area. They’ve started evacuating people, so if we don’t go soon, we might lose our chance to get out."

"We’re not going there yet," Jaxon said, shaking his head.

Elaine frowned. "Why not?"

Jaxon paused and listened. Even from where they stood, he could hear distant screams mixed with bursts of gunfire. Several helicopters flew overhead, their rotors thundering through the night as they headed toward the northern side of the safe zone.

"We need our vehicle first," Jaxon said. He looked toward Thomas. "Can you lead us to it?"

Thomas glanced toward the north, where the evacuation area was located. He hesitated for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh. "Yeah. I know the way."

"Good." Jaxon looked around at everyone. "Just like Elaine did, take some infected blood and smear it on your clothes. It should help mask our scent and keep them from noticing us as easily."

Everyone immediately began preparing. After smearing infected blood across their clothes, they gathered their weapons and got ready to move.

"Natasha, Na-rin, you two take the lead and keep an eye on everyone," Jaxon said, pulling them aside.

Natasha frowned. "Where are you going?"

Na-rin also looked at him, waiting for an answer.

Jaxon gave them a small smile before pointing toward the rooftops. "Don’t worry. I won’t be far behind. I’ll keep watch from up there."

Three small radios appeared in his hands as he handed one to Natasha and another to Na-rin, keeping the third for himself.

"Take these. I’ll stay in contact with you from above, so keep them with you. If anything happens, tell me immediately."

Natasha and Na-rin quickly understood what he was planning. Jaxon would follow them from the rooftops, giving him a better view of the streets while also allowing him to provide support whenever necessary. And with his speed and mobility, catching up to them wouldn’t be difficult.

"Just don’t get too far behind," Natasha said. "Make sure you can still catch up with us."

Jaxon nodded. "I will."

"Good. We’ll handle things from the ground."

Natasha took the lead with Na-rin beside her before guiding the group forward. Na-rin glanced back at Jaxon one last time, and he gave her a reassuring smile before she turned around and continued.

A few steps later, Isabel looked back at him in confusion. "What’s Jaxon doing?"

"Don’t worry, Mom. He’ll be right behind us," Natasha assured her before looking toward Thomas. "Lead the way."

Thomas nodded and started moving, with everyone else following close behind. A few of them still glanced back at Jaxon, wondering why he wasn’t coming with them, but they trusted Natasha and continued forward.

Once the group disappeared around the corner, Jaxon looked around for a way up. He spotted a staircase attached to the side of a nearby building and quickly made his way toward it.

He reached the top of the tenth-floor building, and the higher vantage point immediately gave him a much clearer view of the safe zone. Only a few buildings blocked his line of sight now, allowing him to see both the western streets and the evacuation area to the north.

Far to the west, the colossal infected continued its slow advance. Despite its enormous size, it moved surprisingly slowly, but each step covered a huge distance and sent another tremor through the ground.

Jaxon watched it for a moment before letting out a quiet sigh. ’We were just planning to build our base here, and now we’re already on the move again.’

He shook his head and looked down at the street. Natasha and Thomas were leading the group below, moving carefully through the streets. Jaxon reached into his Storage Space and pulled out a pair of binoculars before turning his attention toward the evacuation area.

The military had turned the main road into a temporary evacuation zone. Several armored vehicles had been positioned bumper to bumper, forming a defensive barricade between the civilians and the incoming horde. Mounted machine guns fired continuously from behind the vehicles while soldiers stood between the gaps, pouring rifle fire into any infected that managed to break through.

But the barricade was already beginning to fail.

Infected slammed against the vehicles from every direction, climbing over the bodies of their own kind to reach the soldiers. Others crawled down from nearby buildings and leaped into the defensive line from above. Some had already slipped through the gaps, forcing soldiers to pull back and fight them inside the evacuation zone.

And behind the defensive line, thousands of civilians were packed together.

Several helicopters were already lifting off, carrying groups of evacuees away from the safe zone. Only a handful remained, yet the number of people still waiting was far greater than what the remaining aircraft could carry.

"Let us through!"

"There’s still room! Let us in!"

"Please, my children are still inside!"

The crowd surged toward the remaining helicopters, pushing against the soldiers who were desperately trying to keep everyone organized.

"Everyone will be evacuated! Stop pushing!"

But the soldiers’ orders were quickly drowned out by the panic.

Then an infected suddenly broke through the barricade.

"INFECTED ARE HERE!"

Gunfire erupted as soldiers turned and opened fire. At the same time, more infected came from above, climbing down the surrounding buildings and dropping into the evacuation zone.

The crowd broke apart in an instant. People screamed and scattered in every direction, abandoning their belongings as they desperately searched for somewhere to escape.

A line of military buses suddenly came rushing down the road, their tires screeching as they pulled up near the evacuation zone.

"Buses are here! Make a line!"

The soldiers tried to organize the crowd again, but fear had already taken over. Civilians rushed toward the buses from every direction, climbing through the doors and pressing against the windows.

"Get more vehicles!" an officer shouted into his radio. "We don’t have enough!"

"We’re trying, sir! Most of the transport units are already deployed!"

From the rooftop, Jaxon slowly lowered the binoculars. ’It’s completely out of control.’
