My SSS-Rank Grim Reaper System

Chapter 271: MAXIMUM COORDINATION

The state of the fight at minute eighteen:

Seraph with five cuts on the angel — the fourth and fifth on the already‑wounded right side, the accumulated energy in F2’s scythe high but the angel anticipating attack angles increasingly well.

Jessica with F6 degrading the second left wing’s edge to thirty‑one percent — real progress but slow, with the angel adjusting position to reduce the direct angle to the edge.

Raven with one hundred four F3 units reconstituted after the pulse that had cleared two hundred forty‑two — functional but far below the peak.

Alex with his eyes closed searching through F7, his right wrist still being healed by Emily, out of active combat.

And the angel adapting.

Not at a speed the team could ignore.

---

Kira saw it first.

Predator’s Sense mapping the angel’s patterns in real time — not just the movements but the cadence between movements, the time the repressor took between evaluating and acting, the attention radius it distributed among multiple targets.

What Predator’s Sense read at minute eighteen was different from minute ten.

At minute ten the angel processed Seraph and Jessica as independent threats with separate response times.

At minute eighteen it processed them as a system. Seraph’s and Jessica’s movements no longer produced individual responses — they produced responses that anticipated both simultaneously, the repressor having found the coordination pattern between them.

"They’re losing the surprise factor," said Kira. "In two or three more attacks, the angel will completely anticipate Seraph’s angles."

"And F6?" said Raven.

"F6 is harder to anticipate because degradation doesn’t have a visible trajectory." Kira. "But the angel has already learned Jessica’s effective radius. It’s starting to stay on the outer edge of that radius."

"How long before Seraph can’t cut anymore?" said Raven.

"Three attacks. Four if she’s lucky." Kira. "After that, the angel will dodge all angles."

Seraph listening without taking her eyes off the angel:

"Solution?"

"Disrupt the pattern it’s reading." Kira. "If the angel is processing Seraph and Jessica as a system — add a variable the system doesn’t include."

"What variable?" said Jessica.

Kira looked at Maya.

---

Maya had been on the north flank since the fight started — with Akari in true form, with the Eastern Island terrain map in her head, with knowledge of every tree and every elevation and every point where mountain ground gave way differently from lower forest ground.

The terrain knowledge she had built over days of walking to the Silent Threshold and back.

"What do you need?" Maya said to Kira.

"The angel moves at a speed that makes terrain irrelevant to it." Kira. "But the angel is on the ground now. It’s not flying."

"Why isn’t it flying?" said Maya.

"Because Seraph needs it on the ground for the cuts to be possible." Kira. "If it flies outside the scythe’s radius, Seraph can’t cut it."

"And if the terrain forces it to stay on the ground?" said Maya.

"There is no terrain that forces something with four wings to stay on the ground if it wants to fly." Kira. "But there is terrain that makes flying less advantageous than staying on the ground."

Maya looked at the north road.

The thirty‑meter trees on both sides — with trunks the thickness of a room, canopies so dense that the space between them was minimal.

The angel with four wings extended had a wingspan of at least twelve meters.

The space between the trees on the north road was six meters.

"The tree canopies," said Maya.

"Yes." Kira. "If the fight moves into the forest interior instead of the open road—"

"The angel can’t fully extend all four wings between the trees," Raven completed. "The pulse needs all four wings to function at maximum."

"The pulse it used to clear Army of Bones needs full radius," said Kira. "Inside the forest, that radius is physically blocked by the trunks."

"And Seraph’s cuts?" said Maya.

"Seraph doesn’t need space." Kira. "The scythe doesn’t have a twelve‑meter wingspan."

Maya was already calculating.

"The entry point to the north forest is forty meters from the angel’s current position." Maya. "If Seraph can move it forty meters north—"

"I can," said Seraph without anyone asking. "I’ll retreat while attacking. The angel will advance to reach me. Forty meters in four attacks."

"Without the angel understanding where you’re leading it?" said Emily from Alex’s position.

"If the angel is processing attack angles, it won’t process the retreat direction until it’s inside the forest." Seraph. "It depends on how many tactical updates it can make simultaneously."

"What we don’t know," said Kira.

"What we’re about to find out."

---

Akari.

Maya with Akari in true form — all nine tails active, the golden eyes with the guardian spirit’s attention reading the fight from the north flank.

"What can Akari do inside the forest?" said Maya.

The nine tails responded before Maya finished the question — not with words, with the specific movement of something that had already calculated the answer and was communicating it through the bond between guardian and bearer.

Maya processed it.

"Akari can use the tree trunks as support points for her tails." Maya. "On the open road, the tails operate in free space — the angel can move between them. Inside the forest, with the trunks as fixed support points, the tails close angles that remain accessible in open space."

"Can she contain the angel?" said Raven.

"Not contain." Maya. "Reduce the available maneuvering space. Make every angel movement inside the forest cost more time because there are more obstacles."

"For Seraph, that’s enough." Seraph. "More time between the angel’s movements means more angles it hasn’t anticipated yet."

---

Viktor from the position he had held since the fight’s start — between Maya and Emily, level eighty‑eight with Blood Magic, having not acted yet because the fight’s level was what it was and Viktor knew exactly what that level meant for someone at eighty‑eight.

But inside the forest, Blood Magic had applications it didn’t have in open space.

"The shadows between the trees," said Viktor.

Kira looked at him.

"Shadow Meld," said Viktor. "In open space, there isn’t enough shadow for it to work against something operating from the Gods’ plane. Inside the forest, with the trees blocking the light—"

"Can you move between the trees without the angel reading you?" said Kira.

"I don’t know if the angel can read Shadow Meld." Viktor. "But if it can’t, I can deliver Blood Needles at contact range."

"Blood Needles won’t do significant damage to the angel."

"No." Viktor. "But if I charge them with Hemomancy using the blood Seraph already produced in the five cuts—"

The team processed that.

The impossible‑colored blood from the angel on the north road ground. The blood that had hissed upon contacting the Eastern Island ground — the Gods’ plane blood in contact with the Eastern Island’s spiritual plane.

Hemomancy manipulated blood from open wounds.

If Viktor could manipulate the angel’s blood—

"I don’t know if Hemomancy works on Gods’ plane blood," Viktor said honestly. "But it’s information worth obtaining."

"And if it doesn’t work?" said Maya.

"Then I lose my position." Viktor. "At no cost to anyone else."

Kira evaluated for two seconds.

"Good."

---

Emily didn’t move from Alex’s position.

Purifying Light active in two simultaneous functions — healing Alex’s right wrist and passive cushioning between Alex and the fight, the same mechanism she had sustained during the Energy Storm and during the record’s price at the Silent Threshold.

Thirty‑four minutes of Purifying Light active in dual mode.

The limit starting to become visible in her posture.

"How much longer?" said Raven, looking at Emily.

"Enough." Emily. "Don’t ask me exactly how much."

"Alex’s wrist?"

"Functional. Not at one hundred percent, but enough to activate Fragments with both hands."

"When?"

Emily looked at Alex — his eyes closed, F7 open, the expression of someone searching for something in a very large space without knowing exactly where it was.

"When he finds what he’s looking for in F7." Emily. "Before that, having his hands ready won’t help."

---

The plan took forty seconds to coordinate.

Not a meeting — short instructions between people who had spent months learning to communicate in the time combat left between movements.

Seraph retreating toward the north forest while attacking. Forty meters. Four attacks.

Kira communicating every angel movement to the team as it happened.

Maya and Akari entering the forest before Seraph arrived — taking position among the trees, the nine tails using the trunks as support points.

Viktor using Shadow Meld to move into the forest interior unseen.

Raven with F3 at maximum holding the one hundred four units on the road — pressure to keep the angel looking forward while Seraph moved it backward.

Jessica maintaining F6 on the degraded left wing edge during the movement — degradation continuing while the angel repositioned.

Forty seconds.

Seraph attacked.

---

The first retreat — one step north while the scythe traced its arc.

The angel advanced to reach her.

Thirty‑five meters between the angel and the forest.

Second attack, second retreat.

Thirty meters.

The angel processing Seraph’s attack angles — not yet processing the retreat direction.

Third attack. The angel almost completely anticipated the angle — the cut arrived but on the arm instead of the side, shallower, the impossible‑colored blood but in lesser quantity.

Twenty meters.

"It’s learning the angles," said Kira. "One or two more attacks before it anticipates all of them."

Fourth attack.

Seraph changed the angle — not the one F2 preferred, the one the angel hadn’t seen in the previous five cuts. The angle that required Seraph to expose her left side briefly to execute.

The angel saw the exposure.

It struck Seraph’s left side.

[Seraph HP: 171,200 → 134,600]

The impact received, F2 absorbing what it could, Seraph retreating no more than a step.

And the cut arrived at the angel’s neck — the first cut on the neck, a new point, no previous wound.

[Angel — sixth cut — neck]

Ten meters from the forest.

---

The angel advanced toward Seraph.

And crossed the tree line.

The thirty‑meter canopies above them closing the aerial space. The nearest trunk to the angel’s right at four meters. The one to its left at three.

The angel tried to extend all four wings for the pulse.

The second left wing struck the trunk at three meters.

It didn’t bend — the thirty‑meter trunk held. But the impact interrupted the wing’s full extension on that side.

The pulse the angel tried to execute came out with a reduced radius.

It reached Raven at the forest’s edge — reaching the one hundred four F3 units.

Forty of the one hundred four collapsed.

Instead of the complete clearance the unobstructed pulse would have produced.

---

Akari among the trees.

The nine tails extended from the trunks like taut ropes — the guardian spirit using the Eastern Island forest’s structure to create a network that was impossible in open space.

The angel moving toward Seraph inside the forest and finding Akari’s tails in the approach angle.

Not stopping it — slowing it. Each tail the angel physically pushed aside cost half a second that wouldn’t have been spent in open space.

Half a second enough for Seraph to execute the seventh attack.

[Angel — seventh cut — left collarbone]

Deeper than the fifth in the same area.

---

Viktor from the shadows between the trunks.

Shadow Meld active — fifty‑two years of Blood Magic practice fusing Viktor with the shadows the thirty‑meter trees created between them, moving toward the point where the angel’s impossible‑colored blood had fallen from the sixth cut on its neck.

The sixth cut had produced more blood than the previous five.

Gods’ plane blood on the Eastern Island ground.

Viktor extended Hemomancy toward that blood.

And the blood responded.

Not the same way ordinary blood responded — the Gods’ plane blood had a resistance mortal blood didn’t, Hemomancy finding a different texture, denser, with the coherence of something that shouldn’t be on the Eastern Island’s spiritual plane.

But it responded.

Viktor processed it in the second he had available.

*It works,* Viktor thought. *With more difficulty. But it works.*

He activated Blood Needles using the angel’s blood as a base.

The projectiles came from the shadows between the trees — not twelve, as was the usual number, but four, the ones Hemomancy could sustain with material that resisted.

Four projectiles made from the angel’s own blood.

Directed at the sixth cut on its neck — the most recent point, the freshest wound, the point where the repressor’s blood was still active.

---

The four projectiles reached the angel’s neck at the same point as the sixth cut.

The angel felt something it hadn’t felt in the entire fight.

Not pain — the repressor didn’t have the exact mechanism for mortal pain. But the specific interference of its own blood being used against it, Viktor’s Hemomancy turning what had come from the Gods’ plane into a weapon that returned to the Gods’ plane from inside.

The angel stopped.

Half a second.

In that half second, Jessica’s F6 — which had maintained the wing edge’s degradation throughout the movement to the forest — reached forty‑three percent discontinuity.

The angel’s left wing, trying to compensate for weight after the Blood Needles impact, moved with a deviation of four degrees from its normal axis.

Four degrees.

Visible.

"The wing is giving way," said Jessica from the forest’s perimeter. "Four degrees of deviation. At sixty percent discontinuity — the left wing loses effective flight capability."

Seraph looking at the angel inside the forest — with the trees limiting the pulse, with Akari slowing the approach, with Viktor using the repressor’s blood against the repressor.

"How long to sixty percent?" said Seraph.

"Three minutes." Jessica. "If Alex doesn’t find what he’s looking for in F7 before—"

Seraph attacked again.

The angel responded.

The fight inside the forest continuing — slower than on the open road, with more friction, with the angel still superior in raw power but no longer in the freedom of movement it had in the first sixteen minutes.

Not stopped.

But contained.

For now.
