My Step-Daughters Are The Villainesses

Chapter 182: Kaliantha Visits The Bedridden Ulrich [1]

Kaliantha walked through the castle corridors with a quiet procession of maids behind her.

Her emerald gown trailed softly across the floor, its fitted silhouette emphasizing the elegance of every step. Platinum-pink hair had been drawn into a beautiful crown braid, and her golden crown rested precisely above it.

She appeared, as always, beautiful beyond reach.

No trace of the night’s event remained on her face as she made her way toward a particular guest chamber. Her expression was perfectly still, her gaze focused ahead, and the maids behind her followed in dutiful silence.

At last, she arrived.

The two royal guards standing before the doors immediately straightened.

"Your Majesty."

Kaliantha acknowledged them with a restrained nod.

The guards opened the doors at once.

"Remain outside," she said.

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Kaliantha entered alone.

The doors shut quietly behind her.

Only then did her composed expression shift by the smallest degree.

Her eyes found Ulrich.

He lay upon the bed in the center of the large guest chamber, dressed in a simple pale shirt instead of his usual tailored formal attire. The room was dim and peaceful, its curtains partially drawn against the morning brightness. Medicine bottles rested on a nearby table, accompanied by clean cloths, healing ointments, and a small bowl of water the physicians had left behind.

Ulrich appeared asleep.

He was not entirely unconscious. The royal physicians had explained that he had been given a restorative mixture: something intended to relax his body, lower the strain on his system, and allow his blood to purge the last lingering traces of demonic poison without interruption.

Even so, the speed of his recovery remained remarkable.

The poison had been potent enough to worry the royal physicians. It had been designed to kill someone with elven blood, someone like Kaliantha, quickly and without leaving an easy path for healing magic.

Against Ulrich, it had been less effective.

But he had received several wounds.

Enough cuts for the poison to enter his body repeatedly.

And yet, within a day, he had already passed the most dangerous stage.

Kaliantha stood near the door for a moment, simply looking at him.

Then she walked forward.

Her shoes made only faint sounds against the tiled floor.

Without his usual tailored coat, without the sharp line of his posture and that distant, assessing gaze of his, Ulrich looked different. He seemed less imposing, less like the Count Rubenhart who could silence a room merely by entering it.

The tension was absent from his face.

His wine-red hair lay slightly disordered against the pillow. His breathing was slow. The delicate features he had inherited from his mother were more apparent in sleep: the fine shape of his lashes, the clean line of his nose, the softness that his usual expression concealed.

He looked vulnerable.

Not weak.

But vulnerable in a way Kaliantha had never seen before.

She could hear the faint rhythm of his breathing.

In.

Out.

In.

Out.

Kaliantha stopped beside the bed.

For a long time, she did not move.

Her gaze rested upon him.

Then, slowly, she raised one hand to her cheek.

Her fingertips traced the line of her jaw.

They descended to her throat, then settled for a moment against her collarbone. The gesture was absent-minded, almost unconscious. Her other hand moved down the length of her arm, fingers passing over the emerald fabric covering her sleeve.

Her eyes never left Ulrich.

At last, her hand lowered toward her chest.

Her palm pressed lightly there.

Kaliantha closed her eyes.

The ballroom returned.

Not the ballroom as it was now in memory: ruined chandeliers, blood across the floor, royal knights shouting orders, and the shattered remnants of a demonic barrier.

She remembered the darkness.

The crushing darkness around them.

Then Ulrich’s arm had been around her.

His body had been pressed against hers, pulling her away from blades she could not see. His hand had held her strongly at the back. His chest had shielded her. His breath had touched her skin whenever he bent close enough to keep her beneath his shoulder.

She had yielded to his movements.

Every step.

Every turn.

Every sudden lift from the marble floor.

She had given him control because there had been no other choice.

And because, somehow, she had trusted him.

Kaliantha remembered the hard line of his body against hers as he moved. His arm locked around her back. His chest against hers. His chin near her hair. The ragged rhythm of his breathing after he had been cut. The warmth of blood that had fallen against her cheek while he continued to fight.

She remembered his heartbeat—loud and fast but still carrying a strange calmness.

Her fingers pressed more against her own chest.

Why could she still feel it?

Why did the memory remain so sharply beneath her skin?

Her eyes opened.

Ulrich was still asleep.

The room was quiet.

Kaliantha took one step toward the bed.

Then another.

For the briefest instant, her mind created an image she did not intend.

She removed her shoes.

Her crown came away from her hair.

She climbed onto the bed and moved over him, close enough that there was nowhere for the distance between them to remain. Her knees settled on either side of him as she leaned down, placing her ear against his chest.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Ulrich’s heartbeat beneath her.

She heard it as clearly as she had in the barrier.

She felt his warmth again.

His arms around her.

The crimson coat shielding her.

The certainty that, while he held her, no blade would reach her.

Kaliantha’s hand went to her own chest.

Her heart was beating too quickly.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Then she blinked.

The image vanished.

She had not moved.

Kaliantha still stood beside the bed.

Her shoes remained on her feet.

Her crown still rested atop her carefully braided hair.

Her hand lay delicately against her chest.

Ulrich slept peacefully before her, entirely unaware of the thoughts that had passed through her mind.

For several seconds, Kaliantha did not move.

Then she slowly lowered her hand.

Her face returned to its usual calm.

But her heterochromatic eyes remained fixed on Ulrich.

After a moment, Kaliantha moved.

She sat carefully on the edge of the bed, the emerald fabric of her gown gathering in folds around her. Her posture remained graceful even there, back straight and chin slightly raised, as if she still sat upon her throne rather than beside the bed of an injured Count.

Her expression was calm.

Yet her gaze did not leave him.

Then she looked down.

Ulrich’s hand rested against the pale sheets, relaxed in sleep. Without gloves or the restraint he wore before the court, his hand revealed details she had not noticed before, even during the dance. Calluses crossed his palm and gathered at the base of his fingers. There were old, faint scars along his knuckles, almost hidden beneath the newer marks left by the demons’ blades.

These were not the hands of a Count who had only ever held a pen, raised a cup at banquets, or signed orders from the safety of his estate.

Kaliantha stared at them.

Then, slowly, she reached forward.

Her own hand looked smaller beside his.

Pale and delicate, with long fingers and nails carefully kept, untouched by the roughness of weapons or work. Her fingertips hesitated above his for one brief second before she let them settle against the back of his hand.

Ulrich’s skin was warm.

Warmer than she expected.

Kaliantha’s fingers slipped between his.

She interlaced them.

For a moment, nothing happened.

The room remained quiet except for Ulrich’s breathing and the muted crackle of the fireplace. Kaliantha looked down at their joined hands, her fingers almost swallowed by the larger shape of his.

Then Ulrich responded.

Not fully awake nor consciously.

His fingers tightened around hers.

The motion was small and instinctive. His hand closed over hers and pressed it lightly into the sheets, as though he had recognized the presence of someone beside him even through the lingering effects of the physicians’ restorative mixture.

Kaliantha parted her soft lips open slightly.

A faint shiver moved down her spine.

Her eyes closed.

She tried to understand the sensation.

It was only a hand.

Only an unconscious response from a man too exhausted to know what he was doing.

There was nothing strange about it.

Nothing that should have made her heart beat harder.

Yet she could feel it.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

Her heartbeat sounded too loud in the stillness of the room.

Kaliantha tightened her fingers around his.

His hand held a certain grip even in sleep. The calluses along his palm brushed softly against her skin. The sensation sent another tremor through her, light and unfamiliar.

She did not pull away.

Instead, still holding his hand, Kaliantha slowly brought their joined fingers toward her chest.

She meant only to feel it.

The warmth of his hand.

The rhythm of her own heart beneath the fabric of her gown.

"Your Majesty."

Kaliantha’s eyes opened.

Ulrich was awake.

His dark red eyes watched her from the bed.
