My Super Sassy Dad: Stop Running Away, Mrs. Quinn!
Chapter 963 - 966: Despair"Alright, enough with the talking!" Weston Hawthorne, frail and bedridden, directed his weak gaze towards Melody Thorne. "You know, I have quite a connection with Miss Melody and the Seymour Family. Over a decade ago, the elder Mr. Seymour fell upon hard times, and I saved him. Now that I’ve fallen upon hard times, it’s his granddaughter who comes to my rescue. It truly seems that kindness begets kindness."
"You knew my grandfather?" Melody Thorne regarded him with increased warmth, pulling over a chair to sit next to him.
"Yes, we’ve been acquainted for over ten years. If you don’t mind, you could call me Grandpa Weston," Weston Hawthorne looked at her tenderly.
"Is someone trying to harm you here?" Melody Thorne asked directly. "You’ve investigated my identity and had ties with my grandfather. Is there somewhere I can help you today? I know a few doctors whose medical expertise is excellent. Should I bring them over to examine you?"
"No, no," Weston Hawthorne’s eyes revealed despair, "I have lived long enough. I’ve seen everything I need to see in this lifetime. Countless people have tried to cozy up to me because of my status, and countless others have betrayed me or wanted my life. In the face of power, familial bonds are hollow. I’ve lived enough."
"Commander," Leo Chaucer couldn’t help but interrupt, "Why soften now? As you should know, in matters of power, there is no room for family affection. Even once you’re gone, they’ll fight over power and turn the Hawthorne Family into a mess."
"Alright, I’m aware of my own physical condition. What’s the point of living a few days longer?" Weston Hawthorne removed a necklace from his neck adorned with two rings, once seemingly worn on fingers.
"This is for you," Weston Hawthorne’s hands trembled as he put it on her. "Consider it a gift for saving me the other day."
Leo Chaucer watched the necklace fall onto Melody Thorne’s neck and understood Weston’s true intention.
Melody Thorne’s nobility ensured that with it in her possession, those of ill intent would not be able to take what they coveted.
Little do they know, the object over which they fought fiercely has fallen into the hands of a woman.
"What is this?" Melody Thorne couldn’t discern its significance.
But she was certain that something Weston Hawthorne wore perpetually was no ordinary item.
"I wouldn’t harm you," Weston Hawthorne’s eyes shimmered with a faint smile. "My life-and-death friendship with your grandfather is enough assurance, isn’t it? You can hold onto it without worry."
Melody Thorne felt awkward but couldn’t refuse the sentiment of someone nearing the end of their life. "I’ll take good care of it, Grandpa Weston."
"Good, good," Weston Hawthorne repeated, his sharp yet lonely eyes sternly fixed on Leo Chaucer. "Adjutant Chaucer, do you have any objections to my decision?"
"None," Leo Chaucer answered promptly, "As long as it’s your decision, I’ll honor it for life."
"Alright, I’m exhausted. Escort her back, and make sure no one sees her."
"Yes, Miss Melody, please." Leo Chaucer replied.
"Grandpa Weston, I genuinely know some renowned doctors. Leon Rivers and Elias Hale are my friends. Maybe they can heal you."
Weston Hawthorne no longer responded to her query, merely waving his hand, signaling her to leave.
"Miss Melody, let’s go. It’s best not to linger here too long," Leo Chaucer gestured invitingly.
