My Superpower Is Piloting Magical Girl Corpses?
Chapter 88: Sacred Tree Spirits Are More Than Just Good LooksEven though he was complaining internally, the corner of Lin Guang's mouth curled up into a smile.
As a high-end player, he really didn't mind.
After all, if the so-called S-Rank Trial was just the same thing every time, it would all become what was known as "rote memorization," which would be pretty boring.
Just how many strange demon beasts were lurking within the mist of the Outer Realm? How many Nightmare Seeds were there? What kind of bizarre abilities did they possess?
Lin Guang was very interested in finding out.
However…
Thinking this far, the boy furrowed his brows again.
Every trial started in the Outer Realm. He'd have to wait until the intensive training was over and Su Fang had fully mastered her powers before he could begin the actual assault.
Maybe this time could be shortened in the future, but there was no way it could ever be completely eliminated.
It would be such a waste to do nothing during this period.Lin Guang fell deep into thought.
…………
The twenty-first trial.
Day three after the start.
In Kazenari Town's city center, inside the Happiness Peace Committee building.
The decor was still that same old, somewhat worn-out, ordinary office style. The only difference was that Amber, the receptionist with that very impressive chest, was nowhere to be seen.
She'd probably gone shopping with some other retired magical girls.
Knock, knock, knock.
Standing next to the half-dead Sacred Tree potted plant, the Cherry-Haired Girl raised her hand and knocked on the counter door.
"Stop bothering me! I'm at a critical part here, don't mess things up!"
From inside the cabinet came Phoenix's voice—pleasant-sounding but urgent, carrying the same kind of annoyance as someone whose spellcasting had been interrupted.
Lin Guang wasn't about to indulge her. He directly pulled the door open.
He saw that beautiful red bird curled up on a small sofa inside the cabinet, its tail feathers tucked in, completely absorbed in watching a projection screen in front of it.
The movie playing on the screen seemed to be a "war between humans and bugs" type of film.
Humanity was backed into a corner by the insectoid race, with only one safe haven left in the entire world still resisting.
—This was probably a variation on stories about the struggle between humans and the Abyss, a pretty common theme in Kazenari Town's creative scene.
But the film's visuals radiated a visible cheapness.
The so-called insectoid army looked more like special-effects actors in cheap rubber suits, clumsily wriggling around a set full of plastic fake mountains. It was truly cringeworthy.
However, despite the five-cent special effects, the plot had clearly reached a critical moment.
The human army's defensive line had been breached. In the background, all you could hear were screams and the flash of explosions.
The camera focused on a grimy, soot-covered man and woman. Judging by their positioning, they were probably the male and female leads.
Facing the overwhelming, pitch-black insectoid tide about to swallow them, the two exchanged a deep, soulful gaze. Slowly, they leaned in, seemingly preparing to share one final, passionate kiss before death claimed them.
Just as their lips touched.
BOOM!!!
A giant, burning meteor appeared out of nowhere on the horizon. With the momentum to destroy heaven and earth, it came crashing down, slamming heavily into the distant skyline.
A colossal mushroom cloud soared into the air. Even its mere shockwave ruffled the hairstyles of the male and female leads on the screen.
Then, those insectoids that had been furiously attacking the human camp suddenly stopped dead in their tracks, like puppets with their strings cut. One by one, they all collapsed.
Humanity had inexplicably won. The male and female leads embraced tightly amidst the ruins.
"…"
Staring at this simple, crude, and utterly unearned deus ex machina happy ending, Lin Guang was speechless.
What the hell was that?
"Boo hoo… that was so good…"
Phoenix, collapsed into the soft red sofa, sniffled and actually shed a few tears.
She kept clapping with the tips of her wings, shouting emotionally:
"A happy ending is the best! The power of love just has to be freaking limitless!"
"Dammit, why does a story always need logic? Good guys should win! Magical girls should defeat tentacle monsters! Pretentious literary crap is unacceptable!"
Lin Guang: "…"
To be honest, she absolutely did not want to encounter tentacle monsters, because she did not want to be… well, drilled.
After finally calming her excitement, Phoenix grabbed a tissue to wipe the corners of her eyes. She turned to look at Lin Guang. "What do you want from me, missy?"
Without any hesitation, Lin Guang asked the question he had prepared: "I want to know if there is a truly detailed standard within the Association for evaluating a magical girl's strength, her various abilities and overall level."
The Magical Girl Association had nearly a hundred years of history. There were records of over a hundred magical girls.
As long as the humans in this world were sane enough, this shouldn't be a topic that had never come up before.
"Oho!"
Hearing this question, Phoenix's golden, bead-like eyes lit up. "Interesting. It's been a really long time since anyone asked me this."
She walked out from the cabinet with her wings folded behind her back, fluttered over to the front desk, and then, from who knows where, produced a pair of small, gold-rimmed round glasses and put them on. Her expression was serious, looking at Lin Guang like a seasoned professor standing in a university lecture hall.
This usually goofy bird suddenly put on a straight face, even her self-reference becoming normal. "I can probably guess why you're asking."
"Let me think of how to describe it to you."
She thought for a moment, then quickly launched into an eloquent explanation:
"In short, your idea is roughly… based on detecting a magical girl's magic power fluctuations, the logical complexity of her unique spell construct, and the degree of reality distortion and the range of magic interference when she uses her ability. Then, you want to build a multi-dimensional, multi-angle standard model to accurately measure a magical girl's strength."
Lin Guang was momentarily stunned.
Phoenix continued, her voice crisp and sweet, her logic tight and her reasoning clear: "This way, with a reference point, magical girls could more easily find the optimal path to improve their own power."
"That's what you were thinking, right? I'm not wrong, am I?"
Lin Guang raised an eyebrow, a bit surprised.
It was hard to imagine that this kind of rationally-minded statement was coming from a bird who was the representative of the Sacred Tree.
Aren't you a mythical creature?
But… her meaning was pretty much on the mark.
He nodded.
Phoenix let out a sigh. "You know, after your amnesia, you've completely changed. You can even ask questions that normal red-type magical girls would never think to ask."
Lin Guang raised another eyebrow. "Someone else has asked?"
"Magical girls from the silver spectrum ask these questions the most. Then in order are the blue… The purple and red ones are mostly idiots, so none of them have ever asked. Anyway, that's not important." Phoenix tilted her head. "From a general, rational perspective, what you said is right."
"If such a model actually existed, it would certainly be better than not having one at all."
"But!"
She suddenly raised her voice, slapping the front desk like she was mimicking hitting a blackboard.
Phoenix's voice then quieted down. She took off her glasses, revealing a slightly helpless look in her eyes. "That kind of thing won't work."
Seeing that Lin Guang didn't respond, Phoenix assumed he was silently accepting her point. She flapped her wings, tossed the glasses aside casually, and then spoke again.
"By the way, Airwen and Amber probably already told you this, right?"
